Conditional Mood in Czech

Overview

The conditional mood expresses hypothetical situations, wishes, polite requests, and unreal conditions. At the CEFR B1 level, mastering the conditional greatly expands your expressive range — from polite "I would like" to complex "if" sentences.

Czech forms the conditional by combining the l-participle (the past tense form) with conditional auxiliaries: bych, bys, by, bychom, byste, by. These auxiliaries are clitics following second-position rules.

The conditional is used constantly in everyday Czech for polite requests (Chtěl bych... — I would like...) and softened opinions (Řekl bych, že... — I would say that...).

How It Works

Conditional Auxiliaries

Person Auxiliary Example
bych chtěl/a bych
ty bys chtěl/a bys
on/a/o by chtěl/a by
my bychom chtěli bychom
vy byste chtěli byste
oni by chtěli by

Formation

L-participle (gender-agreeing) + conditional auxiliary:

  • Šel bych. (I would go — male)
  • Šla bych. (I would go — female)
  • Šli bychom. (We would go.)

Kdyby- Clauses

Kdyby merges with the auxiliary:

Person Form Example
kdybych Kdybych věděl...
ty kdybys Kdybys chtěl...
on/a/o kdyby Kdyby přišel...
my kdybychom Kdybychom měli...
vy kdybyste Kdybyste viděli...

Common Conditional Phrases

The conditional appears in many everyday Czech expressions:

Czech English Context
Chtěl/a bych... I would like... ordering, requesting
Mohl/a byste...? Could you...? polite request
Bylo by lepší... It would be better... suggestion
Neměl/a bys... You shouldn't... advice
Co bys dělal/a? What would you do? hypothetical question
Řekl/a bych, že... I would say that... softened opinion
Rád/a bych... I'd like to... wish/desire

The Conditional in Polite Czech

Politeness in Czech relies heavily on the conditional. Compare the directness scale:

Level Form Example
Direct Imperative Dej mi to. (Give it to me.)
Moderate Question Dáš mi to? (Will you give me it?)
Polite Conditional Dal bys mi to? (Would you give me it?)
Very polite Conditional + prosím Mohl bys mi to dát, prosím?

In service encounters (restaurants, shops, offices), the conditional is the default polite register. Using imperative forms with strangers can be perceived as rude.

Examples in Context

Czech English Note
Chtěl bych kávu. I would like coffee. polite request
Kdybych měl čas, pomohl bych. If I had time, I would help. unreal condition
Mohl bys mi pomoct? Could you help me? polite question
Řekl bych, že ano. I would say yes. softened opinion
Kdyby pršelo, zůstali bychom doma. If it rained, we'd stay home. hypothetical
Neřekla bych to. I wouldn't say that. female, negative
Bylo by to hezké. That would be nice. neuter subject
Koupil bys mi to? Would you buy it for me? informal
Chtěli bychom rezervovat stůl. We'd like to reserve a table. polite plural
Chtěla bych vědět proč. I'd like to know why. female

Common Mistakes

Mixing conditional and past auxiliaries

  • Wrong: Chtěl jsem bych kávu.
  • Right: Chtěl bych kávu.
  • Why: Conditional uses bych/bys/by, not jsem/jsi. These are separate systems.

Wrong auxiliary for person

  • Wrong: My chtěli by. (3rd person by for 1st plural)
  • Right: Chtěli bychom.
  • Why: Each person has its own auxiliary. Bychom is for my.

Forgetting gender agreement

  • Wrong: Já (female) chtěl bych...
  • Right: Chtěla bych...
  • Why: The l-participle agrees with the subject's gender, as in past tense.

Usage Notes

The conditional is ubiquitous in polite Czech. In informal speech, bysme is commonly heard instead of standard bychom. Written Czech maintains bychom.

Practice Tips

  • Practice restaurant ordering with Chtěl/a bych until automatic.
  • Write five kdyby- sentences about your life.
  • Compare past (Šel jsem) with conditional (Šel bych) side by side.
