Nisba Adjectives

Nisba Adjectives in Arabic

Overview

Nisba adjectives (النسبة) are adjectives derived from nouns by adding the suffix ي (-ii) for masculine and ية (-iyya) for feminine. This is one of the most productive patterns in Arabic, used to form nationality adjectives, relational adjectives, and descriptive terms from virtually any noun.

At the A1 level, nisba adjectives are among the first words you learn because they include all nationality adjectives: مصري (Egyptian), عربي (Arabic/Arab), أمريكي (American), لبناني (Lebanese). The pattern is simple and consistent, making it easy to create new adjectives.

Some nouns undergo slight changes when the nisba suffix is added, particularly those ending in ة (which is dropped) or ي (which may change). These modifications follow regular patterns that become predictable with practice.

How It Works

Adjectives derived from nouns using suffix ي- (m) / ية- (f): مصري (Egyptian), عربي (Arabic/Arab), يومي (daily). Very productive pattern.
