Comparative and Superlative in Arabic
التفضيل
Overview
Arabic expresses comparison and superlation using the pattern أَفْعَل (af'al) for masculine and فُعْلى (fu'laa) for feminine. This single form serves both as comparative ("bigger") and superlative ("biggest"), with the meaning determined by sentence structure. This is one of the more straightforward patterns in Arabic, and at the A2 level, it enables you to make comparisons in everyday conversation.
The comparative is formed with أفعل + من (than): أكبر من (bigger than). The superlative uses the definite form or أفعل followed by a noun: أكبر مدينة (the biggest city). Unlike regular adjectives, the أَفْعَل form does not change for gender or number when used as a comparative, though the فُعْلى form exists for certain feminine superlative uses.
Many common adjectives have irregular or semi-regular comparative forms that you will need to learn individually, but the pattern covers most standard adjectives.
Formation
Forming the Comparative/Superlative
| Base Adjective | أَفْعَل Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| كبير (big) | أكبر | bigger/biggest |
| صغير (small) | أصغر | smaller/smallest |
| طويل (tall) | أطول | taller/tallest |
| جميل (beautiful) | أجمل | more/most beautiful |
| حسن (good) | أحسن | better/best |
| سهل (easy) | أسهل | easier/easiest |
| صعب (difficult) | أصعب | more/most difficult |
| قريب (near) | أقرب | nearer/nearest |

| أفعل + indefinite noun | Superlative + noun | أكبر مدينة (the biggest city) |
Examples in Context
| Arabic | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| كبير → أكبر | big → bigger/biggest | Standard pattern |
| هو أكبر من أخيه. | He is bigger than his brother. | Comparative with من |
| القاهرة أكبر مدينة. | Cairo is the biggest city. | Superlative + noun |
| حسن → أحسن | good → better/best | Common irregular |
| هذا أجمل كتاب. | This is the most beautiful book. | Superlative |
| أنا أطول منك. | I am taller than you. | Comparative with pronoun |
| هي الأذكى في الصف. | She is the smartest in the class. | Feminine superlative |

| العربية أصعب من الفرنسية. | Arabic is harder than French. | Comparing languages |
| هذا أفضل مطعم. | This is the best restaurant. | Very common usage |
Common Mistakes
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Adding ة for feminine: أكبرة | Using أكبر for both genders in comparison | The أفعل form does not change for gender in comparative use |
| Forgetting من after comparative | Always using من for 'than': أكبر من | Without من, the meaning shifts to superlative |
| Making أفعل form from 4+ letter adjectives | Using أكثر + noun for long adjectives: أكثر اهتمامًا | أَفْعَل only works with 3-letter root adjectives |
| Using plural agreement with superlative | Keeping أفعل in singular form | The comparative/superlative form is invariable for number |
Practice Tips
- Practice common comparative sentences in daily life: هذا أكبر من ذلك, هذا أحسن, هذا أسهل. Comparisons come up constantly in conversation.
- Learn the most frequent أفعل forms as a set: أكبر, أصغر, أطول, أقصر, أحسن, أفضل, أكثر, أقل. These cover most comparison needs.
- Remember that أكثر (more) + a masdar handles adjectives that cannot form أفعل directly.
