Verb and Adjective Reduplication in Chinese

重叠

This article is part of the Chinese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Chinese reduplication (repeating all or part of a word) changes its meaning or tone. A repeated verb often presents an action as brief, limited, or casual—看看 means “take a look”—whereas a repeated adjective often makes a description more vivid: 高高的 means “nice and tall,” and 高高兴兴 means “very happily” or “cheerfully.”

Overview

Reduplication is common in everyday Mandarin. Instead of adding an ending to a verb, a speaker can repeat it to make a request sound lighter or to show that an action will not take much time. This is why 看看, 想想, and 休息休息 often correspond to English expressions such as “take a look,” “think it over,” and “rest for a bit.” The English word “just” can sometimes suggest the same tone, but it is not a fixed translation.

Adjective reduplication works differently. It usually creates an emphatic, vivid, or descriptive quality rather than a brief one. 红红的脸 is not merely “a red face”; it evokes a noticeably red or rosy face. A two-syllable adjective may take an AABB pattern, as in 高高兴兴, though this is not mechanically possible with every adjective.

At B1, the essential task is to distinguish the productive verb patterns AA, A一A, and ABAB from descriptive adjective patterns such as AA的 and AABB. The repeated form is not just a stronger version of the original word: its effect depends on whether the base word is a verb or an adjective, and on where it appears in the sentence.

How It Works

One-syllable verbs: AA and A一A

For a one-syllable action verb, repeat the verb directly or place 一 between the two copies.

Pattern Base Reduplicated form Typical effect
AA 看看 have a look; look briefly
A一A 看一看 take a look
AA 想想 think for a moment; think it over
A一A 问一问 ask briefly; make an inquiry

AA is compact and very common in conversation. A一A makes the “do it once/a little” idea more explicit. In many contexts they are close in meaning:

  • 你看看。— Take a look.
  • 你看一看。— Have a look.

The pattern often has a delimitative meaning—that is, it presents the action as limited in duration or scope. It can also soften an imperative (a direct request or command): 你想想 sounds less abrupt than simply saying 你想.

When the action is completed, 了 can occur between the repeated verbs:

  • 我看了看菜单。— I took a look at the menu.
  • 她想了想才回答。— She thought for a moment before answering.

This pattern is A了A, not A一A了. The first 了 marks the action as realized or completed, while reduplication keeps it bounded and brief.

Two-syllable verbs: ABAB

A two-syllable verb normally repeats as a whole:

Base (AB) Pattern Form Meaning
休息 ABAB 休息休息 rest for a bit
讨论 ABAB 讨论讨论 discuss for a while
考虑 ABAB 考虑考虑 give it some thought
研究 ABAB 研究研究 look into it; study it a little

Do not normally turn these verbs into AABB forms. For example, 休休息息 is not the standard verb reduplication of 休息. The repeated unit is the complete two-syllable verb: 休息 + 休息.

With many verb–object expressions, it is the verb that repeats, not the entire phrase. These are sometimes called separable verbs because the verb and its object can be split by other material:

  • 散散步 — take a short walk
  • 洗洗澡 — have a quick wash
  • 聊聊天 — have a chat

Which verbs can be repeated?

Reduplication works best with voluntary, controllable actions that can naturally be viewed as short or limited: 看, 听, 问, 想, 试, 休息, 讨论, and 考虑. It is much less natural with:

  • linking and possession verbs such as 是 and 有
  • modal verbs (verbs expressing ability, permission, or necessity) such as 能, 会, and 应该
  • many states or uncontrolled events

For that reason, do not assume that every Chinese verb has a useful repeated form. Learn reduplicated verbs in realistic phrases.

A reduplicated verb also resists expressions that contradict its limited meaning. A phrase such as 看看三个小时 is awkward because 看看 suggests a small, bounded action while 三个小时 specifies a long duration. Use 看三个小时 for “watch/read for three hours.”

One-syllable adjectives: AA的

A repeated one-syllable adjective commonly appears before a noun with 的:

Base Reduplicated form Example Effect
高高的 高高的个子 vividly tall stature
红红的 红红的脸 noticeably red or rosy face
大大的 大大的眼睛 strikingly large eyes
甜甜的 甜甜的味道 pleasantly sweet taste

Here 的 links the descriptive phrase to the noun. The repetition often adds vividness, affection, or an image-like quality. It is therefore not always equivalent to simply adding 很 “very.” Compare:

  • 她个子很高。— She is very tall. (neutral statement of degree)
  • 她有一双大大的眼睛。— She has a pair of big, striking eyes. (descriptive image)

Some repeated forms also occur after the subject as the description itself, usually still with 的 in conversational Mandarin: 苹果红红的 “The apple is nice and red.”

Two-syllable adjectives: AABB

Many two-syllable adjectives can be expanded into an AABB pattern. Each syllable is repeated separately:

Base (AB) AABB form Typical meaning
高兴 高高兴兴 cheerful; very happily
清楚 清清楚楚 completely clear; clearly
干净 干干净净 thoroughly clean
安静 安安静静 quiet and settled
漂亮 漂漂亮亮 lovely; beautifully presented

AABB often conveys a complete, vivid, or emphatic state. Depending on its position, the form can describe a noun, serve as the main description, or describe how an action is carried out:

  • 干干净净的房间 — a spotlessly clean room
  • 房间干干净净的。— The room is spotless.
  • 她高高兴兴地回家了。— She went home cheerfully.

When the repeated adjective modifies a verb, 地 commonly marks it as an adverbial phrase (a phrase explaining how the action happens). Before a noun, 的 is normally used. In speech, particles can sometimes be omitted in familiar fixed combinations, but AABB地 + verb and AABB的 + noun are dependable learner patterns.

AABB is partly lexical: usage is conventional and not every two-syllable adjective can be reduplicated naturally. A dictionary or authentic examples are safer than inventing a form.

ABAB adjective forms

A smaller group of two-syllable descriptive words intensifies through ABAB, especially color and sensory descriptions:

  • 雪白雪白 — pure white
  • 冰凉冰凉 — ice-cold
  • 通红通红 — bright red all over

These do not follow the ordinary AABB model represented by 高高兴兴. Treat common ABAB adjective forms as established combinations rather than as a rule that applies freely to every adjective.

Examples in Context

Chinese English Note
你看看这个。 Take a look at this. AA softens the request.
我想想。 Let me think about it. A brief or bounded period of thought.
你先听一听,再回答。 Listen first, then answer. A一A presents a manageable action.
我想问一问明天几点出发。 I’d like to ask what time we leave tomorrow. 问一问 makes the inquiry sound less abrupt.
他看了看手机,就走了。 He glanced at his phone and then left. A了A describes a completed brief action.
她想了想才回答。 She thought for a moment before answering. The thinking happened before the answer.
我们休息休息吧。 Let’s rest for a bit. Two-syllable verb in ABAB form.
这个问题需要讨论讨论。 This issue needs some discussion. The proposal sounds conversational and limited.
吃完饭,我们出去散散步。 After dinner, let’s go out for a short walk. Only the verb in 散步 is repeated.
她有一双大大的眼睛。 She has a pair of big, striking eyes. AA的 gives a vivid description.
桌上放着一个红红的苹果。 A bright red apple is sitting on the table. 红红的 modifies a noun.
请把房间打扫得干干净净。 Please clean the room until it is spotless. AABB follows 得 to describe the resulting degree.
孩子们高高兴兴地回家了。 The children went home cheerfully. AABB地 describes how they went home.
请安安静静地坐一会儿。 Please sit quietly for a while. The repeated adjective describes manner.
老师讲得清清楚楚。 The teacher explained it with complete clarity. AABB after 得 describes the quality of the action.
今天的天空蓝蓝的。 The sky is a lovely blue today. AA的 serves as the predicate description.

Common Mistakes

Using AABB for an ordinary two-syllable verb

  • Wrong: 休休息息吧。
  • Right: 休息休息吧。
  • Why: Two-syllable verbs normally repeat the whole AB unit, producing ABAB. AABB is characteristic of many two-syllable adjectives, not ordinary verb reduplication.

Treating verb repetition as “very”

  • Wrong: 我看看了三个小时。 (intended: “I watched for three hours.”)
  • Right: 我看了三个小时。
  • Why: 看看 presents looking as brief or limited; it does not intensify the verb. A long duration conflicts with that meaning.

Putting 了 after an AA form

  • Wrong: 他看看了菜单。
  • Right: 他看了看菜单。
  • Why: For a completed brief action, use A了A: 看了看, 想了想, or 试了试.

Repeating every verb automatically

  • Wrong: 我有有时间。
  • Right: 我有时间。
  • Why: Reduplication is productive mainly with controllable actions. Possession verbs, modal verbs, and many states do not take this pattern.

Adding 很 before a repeated adjective

  • Wrong: 她有很大大的眼睛。
  • Right: 她有大大的眼睛。 / 她的眼睛很大。
  • Why: 大大的 already carries vivid emphasis. Use the repeated attributive form for an expressive image, or 很大 for a neutral degree statement.

Mixing up 的, 地, and 得

  • Wrong: 她高高兴兴的回家了。 (in careful standard writing)
  • Right: 她高高兴兴地回家了。
  • Why: 的 usually links a description to a noun, 地 introduces how an action is done, and 得 introduces a description after a verb: 高高的楼, 高高兴兴地回家, 打扫得干干净净.

Usage Notes

Verb reduplication is especially frequent in speech, friendly requests, suggestions, and informal planning. 请看看 is polite, but 请 alone does not make every request natural; the repeated verb helps present the requested action as easy and not burdensome. In formal reports, contracts, or tightly factual prose, an unreduplicated verb or a more precise expression may be preferred.

The softened tone is a tendency, not a guarantee of politeness. 你看看你! can be reproachful—roughly “Just look at you!”—because intonation and context override the gentle effect of repetition. Likewise, 研究研究 may sound modest and conversational, but it can also imply that the matter has not yet received a full investigation.

English often translates repeated verbs with “a bit,” “for a moment,” “have a…,” or “just,” but no single English marker matches the construction. Do not add “a little” mechanically. 清清楚楚, for example, means “perfectly clearly,” not “a little clearly.” First identify whether the repeated word is functioning as a verb or an adjective.

In ordinary speech, the second syllable of an AA verb is often pronounced lightly, but spelling does not change. Learners do not need to force this reduction; listening for it is more useful than trying to apply a rigid pronunciation formula.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Reduplication interacts with sentence structure in ways that go beyond the basic AA/ABAB contrast.

First, a repeated adjective can describe a result or degree after 得. In 打扫得干干净净, 得 connects the action 打扫 “clean” to its achieved result, “spotlessly clean.” This construction is stronger and more result-focused than simply describing the room as 干净.

Second, some repeated forms have become common fixed expressions whose meaning is broader than the sum of their parts:

  • 来来往往 — coming and going; constant movement of people
  • 说说笑笑 — talking and laughing
  • 马马虎虎 — so-so; careless
  • 形形色色 — all kinds; of every description

These resemble reduplication patterns, but you should learn them as vocabulary. For instance, 马马虎虎 is not a freely produced form based on a normal adjective *马虎 in exactly the same way as 干干净净 is based on 干净.

Third, related repeated structures can express repeated or alternating events rather than a brief action. 一天一天地 “day by day” and 一个一个地 “one by one” repeat a measure or classifier phrase, not a verb or adjective. They belong to the wider reduplication system in Chinese but have a different function.

Finally, not all repetition is grammatical reduplication. A speaker may repeat any word for hesitation, correction, insistence, or emotion—我、我不知道 “I—I don’t know.” That is conversational repetition, not the AA verb pattern taught here. Grammatical reduplication has a recognizable form and a conventional meaning.

Practice Tips

  1. Sort before you repeat. Make two lists: controllable verbs such as 看, 试, and 讨论, and descriptive words such as 大, 干净, and 高兴. Build AA/ABAB forms only from the verb list and AA的/AABB forms from the adjective list.
  2. Transform short sentences. Change 看菜单 to 看看菜单 and 看了菜单 to 看了看菜单. Say what changes: the event becomes brief or casually bounded, not more intense.
  3. Listen for function, not just form. When you hear repetition, ask: Is it a light request, a completed short action, a vivid quality, or a fixed expression? Record the whole phrase—such as 想了想 or 高高兴兴地回家—rather than memorizing the repeated word alone.
