Expressing Likes in Ukrainian
Вираження Вподобань
This article is part of the Ukrainian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Ukrainian has two common patterns for saying that you like something. Любити works much like an ordinary verb: Я люблю каву means “I like/love coffee.” With подобатися, the thing liked controls the verb, while the person uses a “to me/to you” form: Мені подобається кава — literally, “Coffee is pleasing to me.”
Overview
At A1, you can express most everyday preferences with two verbs: любити (“to love” or “to like”) and подобатися (“to appeal to” or “to be liked”). They let you talk about food, places, music, people, and activities, but they organize the sentence differently.
With любити, the person who has the preference is the subject (the person doing or experiencing what the verb describes): Я люблю музику. The noun after the verb is normally in the accusative case (the form commonly used for the direct object—the person or thing directly affected by the verb). You can also put an infinitive (the dictionary form of a verb, such as “to read”) after it: Я люблю читати.
With подобатися, Ukrainian presents the situation from the other direction. The thing that appeals is the grammatical subject, and the person experiencing the feeling is in the dative case (a form often corresponding to “to” or “for” someone): Мені подобається Київ. English speakers often make mistakes here because English says “I like Kyiv,” with “I” as the subject. It is more helpful to understand the Ukrainian structure than to replace each English word mechanically.
How It Works
Pattern 1: любити + noun
The basic structure is:
person + form of любити + noun in the accusative
| Person | Present form | Example | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| я | люблю | Я люблю каву. | I like/love coffee. |
| ти | любиш | Ти любиш чай. | You like tea. |
| він / вона / воно | любить | Вона любить музику. | She likes music. |
| ми | любимо | Ми любимо Київ. | We love/like Kyiv. |
| ви | любите | Ви любите спорт? | Do you like sports? |
| вони | люблять | Вони люблять книжки. | They like books. |
The form of любити changes to match the subject. Ukrainian often omits subject pronouns when the verb ending makes the person clear, so both Я люблю каву and Люблю каву are natural.
The noun after любити may change form because it is a direct object. Some common feminine nouns ending in -а change to -у, and those ending in -я often change to -ю:
| Dictionary form | After любити | Example |
|---|---|---|
| кава | каву | Я люблю каву. |
| музика | музику | Я люблю музику. |
| кухня | кухню | Ми любимо українську кухню. |
| піца | піцу | Вони люблять піцу. |
Many inanimate masculine and neuter nouns do not visibly change in the accusative: любити чай, любити Київ, любити море. Plural inanimate nouns often have the same visible form too: любити книжки. Animate nouns (people and animals) follow additional accusative patterns: Я люблю брата, Вона любить котів. Learn these forms with the broader Ukrainian case system rather than treating them as exceptions to the verb.
Pattern 2: любити + infinitive
To say that you like doing an activity, put an infinitive after любити:
person + form of любити + infinitive
- Я люблю читати. — I like/love reading.
- Він любить готувати. — He likes cooking.
- Ми любимо подорожувати. — We like travelling.
The second verb stays in its infinitive form. Do not conjugate both verbs: Вона любить танцювати, not Вона любить танцює.
Pattern 3: dative person + подобатися + thing
The beginner pattern is:
dative person + подобається / подобаються + thing liked
These are the most useful dative pronouns:
| English experiencer | Ukrainian dative form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| to me | мені | Мені подобається фільм. |
| to you (singular, informal) | тобі | Тобі подобається Львів? |
| to him | йому | Йому подобається ця пісня. |
| to her | їй | Їй подобається театр. |
| to us | нам | Нам подобається місто. |
| to you (plural or polite) | вам | Вам подобається кава? |
| to them | їм | Їм подобаються музеї. |
The dative form tells us who has the reaction. It is not the same as an accusative pronoun: use мені, not мене; тобі, not тебе.
Choosing подобається or подобаються
The verb agrees with the thing liked, not with the person who likes it. Agreement means that the grammatical form changes to match another word.
| Thing liked | Verb form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| one thing or person | подобається | Мені подобається цей ресторан. |
| several things or people | подобаються | Мені подобаються ці ресторани. |
| an activity expressed by an infinitive | подобається | Мені подобається плавати. |
This remains true when the experiencer is plural: Нам подобається фільм, because фільм is singular; Нам подобаються фільми, because фільми is plural.
The thing liked is normally in the nominative case (the basic subject form): кава, пісня, книжки. Compare the case difference:
- Я люблю цю пісню. — цю пісню is the object of люблю.
- Мені подобається ця пісня. — ця пісня is the subject of подобається.
Using подобатися with an activity
An infinitive can act as the thing that appeals. Use singular подобається:
- Мені подобається читати ввечері. — I like reading in the evening.
- Нам подобається готувати разом. — We like cooking together.
Both Я люблю читати and Мені подобається читати are natural. The first often sounds like a settled preference or something you enjoy generally; the second presents the activity as pleasant or appealing. In many everyday situations, either is possible.
Negation
Put не immediately before the relevant verb:
- Я не люблю дощ. — I do not like rain.
- Мені не подобається дощ. — I do not like rain.
- Їм не подобаються гучні ресторани. — They do not like noisy restaurants.
In normal conversation, не люблю and не подобається are standard ways to express dislike. They need not mean intense hatred; tone and context determine the strength.
Questions
Yes/no questions can use the same word order with question intonation, or begin with чи:
- Ти любиш каву? — Do you like coffee?
- Чи вам подобається ця музика? — Do you like this music?
For open questions, use що (“what”) or another question word:
- Що ти любиш читати? — What do you like to read?
- Що тобі подобається? — What do you like?
- Яка музика вам подобається? — What kind of music do you like?
Notice that яка музика is singular, so the verb is подобається.

Common Mistakes
Using an English-shaped subject with подобатися
- Wrong: Я подобаюся Київ.
- Right: Мені подобається Київ.
- Why: With подобатися, Kyiv is the thing that appeals and мені identifies the person experiencing the preference. The wrong sentence also changes the possible meaning of я подобаюся to “I am liked / I appeal.”
Choosing the accusative instead of the dative
- Wrong: Мене подобається ця книга.
- Right: Мені подобається ця книга.
- Why: The experiencer takes the dative form: мені, тобі, йому, їй, нам, вам, їм.
Matching the verb to the experiencer
- Wrong: Нам подобаються цей фільм.
- Right: Нам подобається цей фільм.
- Why: цей фільм is singular, so use подобається. The plural meaning of нам does not control the verb.
Forgetting plural agreement
- Wrong: Мені подобається ці пісні.
- Right: Мені подобаються ці пісні.
- Why: ці пісні is plural, so the verb must be plural too.
Leaving a feminine object in its dictionary form after любити
- Wrong: Я люблю музика.
- Right: Я люблю музику.
- Why: The thing directly liked after любити is normally accusative. Here музика changes to музику.
Conjugating the activity verb
- Wrong: Я люблю читаю.
- Right: Я люблю читати.
- Why: After любити, an activity is expressed with the infinitive читати, not the present-tense form читаю.
Usage Notes
How strong is любити?
English separates “like” and “love” more sharply than Ukrainian often does. Любити can express deep love—Я люблю тебе (“I love you”)—but it is also ordinary with foods, hobbies, and habits: Я люблю каву, Я люблю гуляти. Context tells you whether “like” or “love” is the better English translation.
Подобатися usually describes a positive reaction, appeal, or impression. It is especially useful when evaluating a particular song, place, design, film, or person: Мені подобається цей фільм. It can also describe romantic attraction: Ти мені подобаєшся means “I like you” or “I’m attracted to you,” not necessarily “I love you.”
Word order and emphasis
The neutral beginner order is Мені подобається ця пісня, but Ukrainian word order is flexible. Ця пісня мені подобається emphasizes this song, often in contrast with another. Мені ця пісня подобається is also possible in speech. Keep the neutral order until the basic dative-and-agreement pattern feels automatic.
Naming the experiencer
The experiencer does not have to be a pronoun. A person’s name or a noun phrase can take a dative ending:
- Олені подобається Львів. — Olena likes Lviv.
- Моєму братові подобається футбол. — My brother likes football.
- Студентам подобаються ці вправи. — The students like these exercises.
These forms belong to the wider dative-case system. At A1, it is enough to recognize the pattern and confidently use the pronouns.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
You do not need to master the following details at A1, but they explain forms you will meet later.
Because the thing liked is the subject of подобатися, the verb can appear in all persons when that subject is a person. This makes the underlying structure especially clear:
| Ukrainian | Literal structure | Natural English |
|---|---|---|
| Ти мені подобаєшся. | You appeal to me. | I like you. |
| Ви нам подобаєтеся. | You appeal to us. | We like you. |
| Я їй подобаюся. | I appeal to her. | She likes me. |
The ending matches ти, ви, or я, while мені, нам, or їй names the experiencer. The final -ся is part of the verb and changes position slightly after a vowel in forms such as подобаєшся and подобаюся.
In the past tense, подобатися agrees with the gender and number of the thing liked:
- Мені подобався фільм. — I liked the film. (masculine)
- Мені подобалася вистава. — I liked the performance. (feminine)
- Мені подобалося місто. — I liked the city. (neuter)
- Мені подобалися музеї. — I liked the museums. (plural)
There is also a useful contrast between a general preference and a reaction to a particular experience. Я люблю театр presents theatre as one of your established interests. Мені подобається ця вистава evaluates this particular performance. This is a tendency, not a rigid rule, but it helps you choose a natural expression.
Finally, Ukrainian can use подобатися without naming the experiencer when context makes it obvious: Подобається? means “Do you like it?” This is common in conversation. The answer may be simply Так, подобається (“Yes, I do”) or Ні, не дуже (“No, not very much”).
Practice Tips
- Build paired sentences. Choose five nouns and say each preference both ways: Я люблю каву / Мені подобається кава. Pay attention to the object form after любити and the subject form after подобатися.
- Sort singular and plural subjects. Make two lists—подобається for one thing or an activity, and подобаються for several things. Then add different experiencers without changing the agreement rule.
- Ask and answer real questions. Practise Що ти любиш робити?, Яка музика тобі подобається?, and Тобі подобається це місто? Personal answers are easier to remember than isolated forms.
