Verbal Nouns in Russian
Отглагольные существительные
This article is part of the Russian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Russian verbal nouns name an action, process, or result as a thing: изучать язык “to study a language” becomes изучение языка “the study of a language.” Many end in -ние, -ение, -ание, or -тие, but others use -ка or no obvious suffix, as in проверка “checking” and отъезд “departure.” They are especially common in formal and academic writing, and their dependent words must be put in the correct case.
Overview
A verbal noun is a noun (a word that names a person, thing, event, or idea) derived from a verb. Compare the verb развивать “to develop” with the noun развитие “development.” The noun can occupy the same positions as any other Russian noun: it can be the subject of a sentence, follow a preposition, and change for case (the ending that shows a word’s role in the sentence).
English also uses nouns such as “development,” “reading,” and “departure,” so the basic idea is familiar. The difficulty is that English often allows a compact noun phrase or an -ing form where Russian must choose a particular lexical noun and then mark its dependents for case. Russian formation is not completely mechanical: knowing a verb does not always let you predict its noun, and one verb may produce several nouns with different meanings or registers.
At C1, verbal nouns matter because they are central to official, academic, legal, and administrative Russian. They let a writer package a whole action into a noun phrase: После того как комиссия приняла решение... can become После принятия решения комиссией... Used well, this creates compact formal prose. Used too heavily, it creates the dense bureaucratic style often called канцелярит.
How It Works
The main formation patterns
The form must generally be learned with the verb. The following patterns help you recognise new nouns, but they are not rules that can generate a correct noun from every verb.
| Pattern | Verb → noun | Typical meaning or tendency |
|---|---|---|
| -ание / -яние | создать → создание; влиять → влияние | action, process, or state |
| -ение / -ние | изучать → изучение; обсуждать → обсуждение; читать → чтение | action, process, or result; stem changes vary |
| -тие | развить → развитие; принять → принятие; открыть → открытие | action or completed result |
| -ка | проверять → проверка; обрабатывать → обработка | often an operation, practical activity, or repeated procedure |
| other or zero suffix | уехать → отъезд; перейти → переход; выбрать → выбор | lexicalised forms that must be learned individually |
Nouns in -ние, -ение, -ание, -тие are usually neuter and decline like здание: nominative изучение, genitive изучения, dative изучению, accusative изучение, instrumental изучением, prepositional изучении. Nouns in -ка are normally feminine. Other formations have their own gender: отъезд and переход are masculine, while помощь “help” is feminine.
Do not assume that the visible verb ending alone determines the noun. Stem alternations and historical forms are common: читать → чтение, решить → решение, принять → принятие, двигаться → движение. A good dictionary gives the noun as a separate entry.
Turning a clause into a noun phrase
When an action is nominalised (expressed as a noun rather than a verb), the sentence loses tense and person. Compare:
- Компания развивает технологию. — “The company is developing the technology.”
- развитие технологии компанией — “the development of the technology by the company”
The original direct object, технологию, becomes genitive: технологии. The original subject, компания, can become instrumental: компанией. Russian often leaves the agent unexpressed when it is obvious or unimportant.
A common model is:
verbal noun + genitive object + instrumental agent
- подписание договора директором — “the signing of the contract by the director”
- рассмотрение заявления комиссией — “consideration of the application by the committee”
The agent is the person or body that performs the action. The instrumental agent is particularly useful in formal writing because it avoids ambiguity. However, not every noun phrase needs to state both participants.
Case government
Government means that one word requires another word to appear in a particular case or with a particular preposition. With direct transitive verbs, an accusative object commonly becomes a genitive dependent of the verbal noun:
| Verb construction | Noun construction |
|---|---|
| изучать язык — study a language | изучение языка — study of a language |
| принять решение — make a decision | принятие решения — decision-making / adoption of a decision |
| обсудить проект — discuss the project | обсуждение проекта — discussion of the project |
| защитить данные — protect data | защита данных — data protection |
If the verb governs another case or a prepositional phrase, the noun often preserves that relationship:
| Verb construction | Noun construction | Pattern retained |
|---|---|---|
| управлять компанией | управление компанией | instrumental |
| содействовать развитию | содействие развитию | dative |
| зависеть от погоды | зависимость от погоды | от + genitive |
| участвовать в проекте | участие в проекте | в + prepositional |
| бороться с коррупцией | борьба с коррупцией | с + instrumental |
| готовиться к экзамену | подготовка к экзамену | к + dative |
This preservation is a strong guide, not an excuse to translate word for word. Some derived nouns develop their own established combinations. Learn verb + complement and noun + complement together.
Building a formal sentence
Verbal nouns frequently follow prepositions that organise formal prose:
- после завершения проекта — after completion of the project
- до принятия решения — before a decision is made
- в ходе обсуждения — during the discussion
- при содействии университета — with the assistance of the university
- в целях повышения качества — for the purpose of improving quality
- путём сравнения результатов — by comparing the results
Notice the layers of case. In после завершения проекта, после requires genitive завершения, while the noun завершение itself takes genitive проекта. In при содействии университета, при requires prepositional содействии, and the assisting institution appears in the genitive, университета.

Common Mistakes
Keeping the direct object in the accusative
- Wrong: изучение русский язык
- Right: изучение русского языка
- Why: The accusative object of изучать normally becomes a genitive dependent after изучение. The adjective must agree with the noun in that case.
Changing a governed case unnecessarily
- Wrong: управление компании when the meaning is “management of/running the company”
- Right: управление компанией
- Why: Управлять governs the instrumental, and управление retains it. The genitive phrase управление компании is possible in another structure, meaning roughly “the company’s management/administration,” so the case changes the relationship.
Inventing a noun by attaching a productive suffix
- Wrong: assuming every verb can freely form a current noun in -ние
- Right: check the established noun: уехать → отъезд, выбрать → выбор, помочь → помощь
- Why: The suffixes are recognisable, but Russian derivation is lexical. Sound changes, older formations, and competing nouns make mechanical guesses unreliable.
Leaving the agent ambiguous
- Unclear: приглашение профессора
- Clearer: приглашение профессора организаторами / приглашение, отправленное профессором
- Why: The genitive can be understood as the person invited or, in some contexts, the person doing the inviting. Recast the phrase or mark the agent with the instrumental when the distinction matters.
Overloading ordinary speech with formal nouns
- Heavy: После осуществления покупки произведите сохранение чека.
- Natural: После покупки сохраните чек.
- Why: A chain of abstract nouns and generic verbs sounds bureaucratic. In instructions and conversation, a direct verb is often clearer.
Usage Notes
Verbal nouns are not automatically formal. Everyday Russian naturally uses чтение “reading,” поездка “trip,” встреча “meeting,” покупка “purchase,” and отъезд “departure.” Register depends on the particular noun, its context, and how many abstract noun phrases are packed together.
The formal effect becomes stronger in combinations such as осуществление контроля “implementation/exercise of control,” проведение исследования “conducting a study,” and принятие мер “taking measures.” These support-verb constructions use a fairly general verb plus a noun that carries the main meaning. They are normal in appropriate genres, but a simple verb may be better elsewhere: исследовать instead of проводить исследование, or контролировать instead of осуществлять контроль.
English often uses an -ing clause with an explicit subject: “after the committee approved the plan.” Russian can use a clause too: после того как комиссия утвердила план. The nominal alternative, после утверждения плана комиссией, is more compact and often more formal. Neither is universally better. Choose the clause when tense, responsibility, or the sequence of events needs to be vivid; choose the noun phrase when the action is treated as a procedure, topic, or documented event.
Number also depends on meaning. A process may normally be singular: обработка данных “data processing.” The plural can refer to distinct instances, types, or results: новые разработки “new developments/designs,” многократные проверки “repeated inspections.” This distinction is lexical, so do not copy English countability automatically.
Beyond the Basics: Meaning, Aspect, and Ambiguity
A verbal noun does not transparently preserve every feature of its verb. It normally has no tense and does not itself tell you whether the event is past, present, or future; context supplies that information. It may also refer to the process, a single event, or its result. Открытие can mean the act of opening, an opening ceremony, or a discovery. Издание can mean publication as an activity, an edition, or a publishing organisation in some contexts.
Russian verb aspect distinguishes an action viewed as ongoing/repeated from one viewed as a bounded whole. Related imperfective and perfective verbs do not always yield a neat pair of nouns. Sometimes one noun is conventional for both viewpoints; sometimes two formations have specialised meanings. Compare решать/решить with решение: the noun can mean both the act/result of deciding and “a solution.” Context, modifiers, and genre do more work than a simple aspect label.
Long nominal chains are characteristic of institutional prose: порядок рассмотрения заявлений на получение разрешения “the procedure for considering applications to obtain a permit.” To parse one, start with the head noun—the central noun that determines the phrase—then attach each dependent in turn:
- порядок — procedure
- рассмотрения заявлений — for considering applications
- на получение разрешения — to obtain a permit
When writing, test whether a chain can be divided into a clause. Правила регулируют, как рассматриваются заявления... may be easier to read. Advanced control means being able both to understand dense nominal style and to avoid it when clarity matters more than institutional tone.
Finally, genitive phrases can encode several relationships. In приезд президента, the president arrives; in арест подозреваемого, the suspect is arrested. Grammar and real-world meaning usually resolve the difference, but not always. The instrumental is a useful marker for an expressed agent—арест подозреваемого полицией—while a relative clause can remove any remaining ambiguity.
Practice Tips
- Transform both ways. Take a sentence such as Эксперты обсудили результаты and make обсуждение результатов экспертами. Then turn the noun phrase back into a natural clause. This trains both case choice and style.
- Record government, not isolated words. Write vocabulary entries as управлять чем? → управление чем? and зависеть от чего? → зависимость от чего?. Include one real sentence for each pattern.
- Compare registers in authentic texts. Highlight verbal nouns in a news report, contract, or university notice. Rewrite two dense sentences with verbs and ask what changes: brevity, precision, responsibility, or tone.
