Discourse Connectors in Portuguese
Conectores do Discurso
This article is part of the Portuguese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Advanced Portuguese connectors tell readers how one part of an argument relates to another. No entanto, contudo, todavia, and porém mark contrast; por conseguinte marks a logical result; com efeito confirms or supports a claim; and é de salientar que or cumpre referir que formally draw attention to a point. At C2, success depends less on memorizing translations than on choosing a connector whose logic, register, and position fit the text.
Overview
A discourse connector is a word or fixed phrase that guides a reader through a text. It can signal that an idea contrasts with an earlier one, follows from it, confirms it, or deserves special attention. Compare the plain sequence Os custos aumentaram. O projeto continua (“Costs rose. The project continues”) with Os custos aumentaram. No entanto, o projeto continua (“Costs rose. However, the project continues”). The connector makes the intended relationship explicit.
The foundation begins with basic conjunctions such as e, mas, porque, and portanto. A conjunction is simply a linking word: it joins words or clauses, meaning groups built around a verb. At C2, you need a broader range and finer control. Mas, no entanto, contudo, and todavia may all express contrast, but they do not create exactly the same rhythm or level of formality. Likewise, English “in fact” does not automatically correspond to com efeito in every context.
These forms occur frequently in essays, reports, journalism, presentations, academic prose, and administrative or legal documents. They are also useful for reading: a connector often reveals the structure of a difficult paragraph before you have understood every word. In conversation, however, piling up formal connectors can sound rehearsed or bureaucratic.
How It Works
Choose the logical relationship first
Before choosing a sophisticated expression, decide what the next statement actually does. Does it oppose the previous claim, follow from it, provide evidence for it, or merely add another point?
| Relationship | Main connectors | Typical English sense | Usual register |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contrast | no entanto, contudo, porém, todavia | however, nevertheless, yet | neutral-formal to elevated |
| Concession after a difficulty | ainda assim, apesar disso, não obstante | even so, despite that, notwithstanding | neutral to very formal |
| Consequence | por conseguinte, consequentemente, portanto, assim | consequently, therefore, thus | neutral to formal |
| Confirmation or support | com efeito, de facto (Portugal), de fato (Brazil) | indeed, in fact | neutral-formal |
| Highlighting | é de salientar que, importa notar que, convém sublinhar que | it should be noted that | formal |
| Required or relevant mention | cumpre referir que, cabe mencionar que | it should be mentioned that | formal, often institutional |
| Addition | além disso, ademais | furthermore, moreover | neutral-formal to elevated |
| Reformulation or summary | isto é, ou seja, em suma | that is, in other words, in short | neutral to formal |
Contrast: four close choices
No entanto is the safest all-purpose choice in careful prose. It introduces information that limits or counters what came before:
O método é eficaz. No entanto, exige tempo.
“The method is effective. However, it takes time.”
Contudo has much the same logic but is compact and characteristically written. Todavia is also contrastive, usually with a more elevated or literary flavor. Porém is common in formal and semi-formal writing and is especially flexible in position:
- Porém, a medida não basta.
- A medida, porém, não basta.
- A medida não basta, porém.
The middle position is polished and natural in writing. It marks porém as a parenthetical element—an inserted comment that could be removed without destroying the sentence structure. Commas normally set it off there.
These connectors do not introduce a dependent clause in the same way as embora (“although”). Compare:
- Embora seja caro, o sistema é fiável. — “Although it is expensive, the system is reliable.”
- O sistema é caro. Contudo, é fiável. — “The system is expensive. However, it is reliable.”
After embora, Portuguese normally uses the subjunctive, the verb form used for perspectives such as uncertainty, concession, or evaluation. Contudo does not itself trigger the subjunctive.
Consequence: a conclusion must really follow
Por conseguinte presents the next idea as a logical result of the preceding information. It is stronger and more formal than conversational então and usually more elevated than portanto:
Não foram apresentados novos dados. Por conseguinte, mantém-se a decisão.
“No new data were presented. Consequently, the decision remains in force.”
Use it only when the inference is defensible. If the second sentence merely happens later, a time connector such as depois is more accurate. If it adds another reason, use além disso. Elegant vocabulary cannot repair faulty logic.
Assim can mean formal “thus,” but it also means “in this way” or “like that.” The surrounding sentence must make its function clear. Consequentemente is explicit and formal; repeated use can make prose heavy.
Confirmation: com efeito is not always “in fact”
Com efeito normally confirms, substantiates, or develops a previous claim. It often has the force of “indeed”:
Os indícios são preocupantes. Com efeito, três indicadores pioraram.
“The signs are worrying. Indeed, three indicators worsened.”
English “in fact” is broader. It can correct an assumption: “I thought he lived in Porto; in fact, he lives in Braga.” In that corrective use, Portuguese generally prefers na verdade or de facto/de fato, not com efeito. Never translate com efeito literally as “with effect.”
The spelling varies by standard: de facto is standard in European Portuguese, while de fato is standard in Brazilian Portuguese. Both can confirm or correct, depending on context.
Highlighting and formal mention
É de salientar que means that a fact deserves emphasis. Its pattern is:
é de + infinitive + que + clause
Here, an infinitive is the base verb form, such as salientar (“to highlight”). Related phrases include é de notar que, importa salientar que, and convém recordar que.
Cumpre referir que presents mentioning something as appropriate, necessary, or part of the writer’s duty. Cumpre is the third-person singular of cumprir, but this is an impersonal construction: no individual “I” is named as the person who must mention the point.
- É de salientar que os dados são provisórios. — the fact deserves emphasis.
- Cumpre referir que o prazo já terminou. — the fact must or should be put on record.
Both are formal. In ordinary conversation, vale a pena dizer que, é importante dizer que, or simply stating the fact is usually more natural.
Punctuation and position
Sentence-opening connectors are normally followed by a comma: No entanto, ...; Por conseguinte, ...; Com efeito, ... They may follow a full stop or a semicolon when they connect complete sentences:
O parecer foi favorável; contudo, a decisão foi adiada.
Do not join two independent sentences with only a comma in careful writing. A full stop or semicolon is safer. When a connector is inserted into a clause, commas generally mark the insertion: A proposta, todavia, continua válida. Fixed phrases followed by que, such as é de salientar que, do not take a comma before que.
Examples in Context

| A hipótese, porém, não foi confirmada. | The hypothesis, however, was not confirmed. | Porém in middle position |
| Houve vários atrasos. Ainda assim, a equipa cumpriu o prazo. | There were several delays. Even so, the team met the deadline. | Concession despite an obstacle |

| Os dois cenários são, em suma, igualmente arriscados. | In short, the two scenarios are equally risky. | Summarizes the argument |
Common Mistakes
Treating every contrast connector as conversational
- Awkward: Todavia, não quero pizza hoje. (casual chat with a friend)
- Natural: Mas hoje não quero pizza.
- Why: Todavia is grammatically correct, but it sounds elevated in a routine exchange. Advanced control includes knowing when a simple connector is better.
Using com efeito for a correction
- Wrong choice: Achei que era médico; com efeito, é enfermeiro.
- Better: Achei que era médico; na verdade, é enfermeiro.
- Why: The second clause corrects a false belief. Com efeito normally confirms or supports an earlier statement.
Confusing consequence with addition
- Illogical: O serviço é rápido. Por conseguinte, também é barato.
- Better: O serviço é rápido. Além disso, é barato.
- Why: Being cheap does not necessarily result from being fast. Além disso adds an independent point.
Adding a comma before que
- Wrong: É de salientar, que os valores são provisórios.
- Right: É de salientar que os valores são provisórios.
- Why: Que introduces the content being highlighted and belongs directly to the fixed construction.
Combining redundant connectors
- Wrong: Embora seja caro, contudo, é necessário.
- Right: Embora seja caro, é necessário.
- Also right: É caro; contudo, é necessário.
- Why: Embora already marks concession. Adding contudo usually duplicates the same signal in one sentence.
Overloading every sentence
- Heavy: Contudo, importa salientar que, por conseguinte, a decisão mudou.
- Clearer: Os pressupostos mudaram. Por conseguinte, a decisão também mudou.
- Why: Each connector should perform one clear job. Too many formal markers obscure rather than organize the reasoning.
Usage Notes
Register is central to this topic. In spontaneous speech, Portuguese speakers rely heavily on mas, então, por isso, só que, and na verdade. No entanto and porém also occur in speech, especially in prepared or careful discussion. Todavia, por conseguinte, and cumpre referir que are much more strongly associated with formal writing or public speech.
European and Brazilian Portuguese share the core connectors, but frequency and preferred institutional formulas vary. The clearest visible difference here is de facto in Portugal versus de fato in Brazil. In Brazilian formal prose, cabe destacar que or cumpre destacar que may occur; in European formal prose, importa salientar que and cumpre referir que are familiar choices. These are tendencies, not borders: genre and individual style matter as much as country.
English punctuation habits can mislead. English writers sometimes place “however” after a comma between two full clauses, but careful Portuguese generally favors a full stop or semicolon before contudo, porém, or no entanto. Also avoid translating English connectors mechanically: “actually” may be na verdade, “still” may be ainda assim, and “therefore” may be portanto or por conseguinte depending on tone.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Strong writing uses connectors to reveal structure, not to decorate sentences. You can create a controlled argumentative progression such as claim → limitation → evidence → conclusion:
O programa melhorou o acesso ao serviço. No entanto, persistem desigualdades regionais. Com efeito, três distritos registaram uma procura muito inferior à média. Por conseguinte, justifica-se uma intervenção localizada.
Here each marker has a separate role: no entanto limits the claim, com efeito introduces supporting evidence, and por conseguinte draws an inference. Replacing all three with “fancier” synonyms would not improve the paragraph.
Connector position also shapes emphasis. Porém, a proposta foi rejeitada foregrounds the argumentative turn. A proposta, porém, foi rejeitada keeps the proposal as the topic and inserts the contrast more quietly. Final porém—A proposta foi rejeitada, porém—is possible, especially in literary or rhetorically marked prose, but is less useful as a default learner pattern.
Formal highlighting phrases can conceal the writer behind an impersonal voice. Cumpre referir que houve falhas avoids “I must mention” and can sound authoritative or institutional. That may be appropriate in a report, but it can also make prose distant. In clear modern writing, Houve falhas may be stronger. At C2, omission is itself a stylistic choice: when the relationship is already obvious, no connector may be needed.
Practice Tips
- Label the logic before rewriting. Take a short article and mark each relationship as contrast, evidence, consequence, addition, or summary. Then choose a Portuguese connector; do not begin from an English translation.
- Build register pairs. Practice mas → no entanto/todavia, por isso → por conseguinte, and é importante dizer → cumpre referir, noting where each version would sound natural.
- Edit for restraint. Write one formal paragraph using three different connectors. On a second pass, remove any connector whose relationship is already obvious or whose logic is weak.
