Academic and Research Writing in Korean
학술 문체
This article is part of the Korean grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Korean academic prose presents claims as reasoned, limited conclusions rather than personal assertions. It commonly combines nominalized expressions such as -는 것 and -음, cautious endings such as -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 and -는 것으로 보인다, source-based citation patterns, and formal connectors. The goal is not simply to make every sentence passive or impersonal, but to show clearly what the evidence supports, where information comes from, and how each sentence relates to the argument.
Overview
학술 문체 is the register (a style chosen for a particular setting) used in research articles, theses, academic reports, and formal analytical essays. At C1, knowing individual grammar endings is not enough: you need to combine them into prose that is precise, cohesive, and appropriately cautious. Korean academic writing often favors compact noun-based phrases, explicit logical connections, and plain declarative endings such as -다 over conversational politeness endings.
For an English-speaking learner, some forms have familiar functions but do not map word for word. English “may” might become -(으)ㄹ 수 있다, 가능성이 있다, or -는 것으로 보인다, depending on whether you mean possibility, probability, or an evidence-based interpretation. English research prose also tolerates “we argue” or “this paper shows”; Korean often uses 본 연구는 … 밝히고자 한다 or …임을 보여 준다, but active first-person phrasing is not forbidden when a field or publication prefers it.
Academic style is partly grammar and partly judgment. A passive form can foreground a procedure, a nominalization can package an idea for later discussion, and a hedge can keep a conclusion proportional to the evidence. Overusing any one of these, however, makes writing vague or heavy.
How It Works
Establish the basic sentence style
Most Korean academic prose uses the 해라체 plain written style, especially the endings -다, -는다, and -ㄴ다. Descriptive verbs (often called adjectives in Korean grammar) and 이다 usually end in -다; action verbs take -는다 after a consonant and -ㄴ다 after a vowel or ㄹ.
| Predicate type | Typical form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Action verb, consonant stem | -는다 | 영향을 받는다 |
| Action verb, vowel or ㄹ stem | -ㄴ다 | 차이를 보인다 |
| Descriptive verb | -다 | 필요성이 크다 |
| Noun + 이다 | -(이)다 | 주요 원인이다 |
| Past statement | -았/었다 | 유의한 차이가 나타났다 |
A paper normally maintains one ending style consistently. Do not switch casually between -습니다, -다, and conversational -요 endings. Instructions, participant materials, abstracts, or institutional templates may follow separate conventions.
Turn clauses into research objects with nominalization
A nominalization turns an action or statement into a noun-like unit—something that can be observed, compared, demonstrated, or discussed.
| Pattern | Main function | Example | Natural sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| -는 것 / -(으)ㄴ 것 | Neutral fact, event, or proposition | 결과가 달라지는 것 | the fact that the result changes |
| -(으)ㅁ | Compact formal proposition | 관련성이 있음을 확인했다 | confirmed that there is a relationship |
| -기 | Activity, process, or established phrase | 자료를 분류하기가 어렵다 | classifying the data is difficult |
| Noun + 적 | Creates an “-al/-ic” modifier | 구조적 문제 | structural problem |
| Noun + 화 | Names a process or change | 도시화의 영향 | the effect of urbanization |
-(으)ㅁ is especially common before verbs such as 확인하다 “confirm,” 밝히다 “establish/reveal,” 보여 주다 “show,” and 시사하다 “suggest”: 차이가 존재함을 보여 준다. -는 것 is less compressed and often easier to read: 차이가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. Neither is automatically more scholarly; choose the form that makes the sentence clear.
Korean also builds dense noun phrases: 온라인 학습 환경에서의 상호작용 빈도 변화 means “changes in interaction frequency in online learning environments.” These are efficient, but long strings of nouns and -의 can hide the relationships between ideas. Recast them as clauses when the reader must stop to unpack them.
Hedge claims to match the evidence
A hedge limits the strength or scope of a claim. It does not necessarily express uncertainty; it can distinguish a result from an interpretation or acknowledge that other explanations remain possible.
| Pattern | Typical force | Example |
|---|---|---|
Use the strength that the evidence warrants. 증명한다 “proves” is a very strong claim and is often unsuitable outside a genuine proof or decisive demonstration. 보여 준다, 나타낸다, and 시사한다 differ: the first two present a finding, while 시사한다 marks an implication inferred from it.
Hedges can be stacked, but excessive stacking weakens the prose: 영향을 미쳤을 가능성이 있는 것으로 보인다 may occasionally be justified, yet often one carefully chosen form is enough.
Use passive and result-focused constructions selectively
Korean passive forms include lexical passives in -이/히/리/기-, constructions with -되다, and -어지다. Academic writing uses them to foreground a method, result, or accepted practice when the agent is unknown, obvious, or unimportant.
| Focus | Example | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Procedure | 자료는 세 집단으로 분류되었다. | foregrounds what happened to the data |
| Observation | 유의한 차이가 관찰되었다. | foregrounds the observed result |
| General practice | 이 용어는 널리 사용된다. | presents conventional usage |
| Change/result | 새로운 기준이 마련되었다. | emphasizes the resulting state |
Do not translate every English passive mechanically. Korean often prefers an intransitive or result verb: 차이가 나타났다 “a difference emerged,” 비율이 증가했다 “the proportion increased,” or 분석 결과가 확인되었다 “the analysis result was confirmed.” If responsibility matters, name the actor: 연구진은 자료를 재분석했다 is clearer than hiding the researchers behind a passive.
Cite claims and distinguish voices
Citation language must make the boundary between a source’s claim and your own analysis visible. Exact formatting depends on the required citation style, but the grammar follows several reusable patterns.
| Pattern | Use | Example frame |
|---|---|---|
| N에 따르면 | according to a source | 선행 연구에 따르면, … |
After a consonant, quoted declaratives attach with -이라고; after a vowel, -라고: 핵심 요인이라고 설명했다, 필요하다고 지적했다. For quoted questions use -냐고, and for proposals or commands use -자고 or -(으)라고 as appropriate. In literature reviews, vary reporting verbs according to the source’s action: 정의하다 “define,” 분석하다 “analyze,” 지적하다 “point out,” 제안하다 “propose,” and 검토하다 “examine” are not interchangeable.
Signal the logic with formal connectors
Connectors should reveal the relationship between claims, not merely make the prose sound formal.
| Relationship | Common connectors | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Addition | 또한, 더불어, 나아가 | add or extend a point |
| Contrast | 그러나, 반면에, 이에 반해 | introduce contrast or limitation |
| Cause/result | 따라서, 그러므로, 이에 따라 | present a supported consequence |
| Reformulation | 즉, 다시 말해 | restate or specify |
| Example | 예를 들어, 구체적으로 | introduce evidence or illustration |
| Concession | 비록 …지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 | acknowledge a counterpoint |
| Sequence | 먼저, 다음으로, 마지막으로 | organize a procedure or argument |
따라서 requires a real inferential link; it should not mean merely “and then.” 한편 can shift to another aspect or contrast a parallel point, but repeated paragraph-initial 한편 often leaves the exact relationship unclear.
State purpose, significance, and scope
Research writing repeatedly performs a few discourse actions:
- Purpose: 본 연구에서는 X를 분석하고자 한다. — “This study seeks to analyze X.”
- Scope: 본 논의는 X에 한정한다. — “This discussion is limited to X.”
- Significance: X라는 점에서 주목할 만하다. — “It is noteworthy in that X.”
- Organization: 다음 절에서는 X를 검토한다. — “The next section examines X.”
- Limitation: 이러한 결과를 일반화하는 데에는 한계가 있다. — “There are limits to generalizing these results.”
-고자 하다 marks a deliberate formal intention. It is useful for research aims, but repeating it for routine actions sounds inflated. Once the purpose is established, direct verbs such as 살펴본다, 비교한다, and 검토한다 are usually clearer.
Examples in Context
| Korean | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 본 연구에서는 온라인 상호작용이 학습 지속성에 미치는 영향을 분석하고자 한다. | This study seeks to analyze the effect of online interaction on learning persistence. | Formal statement of purpose with -고자 한다 |
| 선행 연구에 따르면, 피드백의 빈도와 학습 동기 사이에는 유의한 관련성이 있다. | According to prior research, there is a significant relationship between feedback frequency and learning motivation. | Source frame with -에 따르면 |
| 설문 자료는 연령대에 따라 세 집단으로 분류되었다. | The survey data were divided into three groups by age range. | Passive foregrounds the procedure |
| 분석 결과, 두 집단 사이에 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. | The analysis showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups. | Result-focused reporting |
| 이러한 차이는 표본 규모에서 비롯되었을 가능성이 있다. | This difference may have resulted from the sample size. | Explicit possibility, not certainty |
| 참여자의 응답을 고려할 때, 제도의 접근성이 개선된 것으로 보인다. | Considering the participants’ responses, access to the system appears to have improved. | Evidence-based hedge |
| 이 결과는 사회적 지원이 참여율에 영향을 줄 수 있음을 시사한다. | This result suggests that social support may affect participation rates. | Nominalized proposition after 시사한다 |
| 최(2023)는 지역별 격차가 확대되고 있다고 보고했다. | Choi (2023) reported that regional disparities were widening. | Indirect citation with a reporting verb |
| 기존 연구는 효율성에 초점을 맞춘 반면, 본 연구는 이용자의 경험을 중심으로 살펴본다. | Whereas previous studies focused on efficiency, this study examines users’ experiences. | Contrast with 반면 |
| 이 접근법은 다양한 자료에 적용할 수 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. | This approach is noteworthy in that it can be applied to diverse data. | States significance and its basis |
| 표본이 한 지역에 한정되었으므로, 연구 결과를 전체 인구에 일반화하기는 어렵다. | Because the sample was limited to one region, it is difficult to generalize the findings to the entire population. | Limitation tied to a reason |
| 따라서 후속 연구에서는 장기적인 변화 양상을 검토할 필요가 있다. | Therefore, subsequent research needs to examine patterns of long-term change. | Supported implication and recommendation |
Common Mistakes
Treating -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 as only “can”
- Awkward: 이 결과는 이론을 증명할 수 있다.
- Better: 이 결과는 이론의 타당성을 뒷받침하는 것으로 볼 수 있다.
- Why: In academic prose, -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 can mark an interpretation, but combining “can” with 증명하다 produces an unclear mix of possibility and certainty. State exactly what the evidence supports.
Hiding every actor with a passive
- Awkward: 연구 설계가 연구자들에 의해 수정되었다.
- Better: 연구진은 연구 설계를 수정했다.
- Why: If the actor matters and is known, active Korean is shorter and clearer. Passive voice is a tool for focus, not a requirement of academic style.
Overloading a sentence with nominalizations
- Awkward: 참여 확대 가능성 검토의 필요성 제기가 이루어졌다.
- Better: 참여가 확대될 가능성을 검토할 필요가 있다는 의견이 제기되었다.
- Why: A chain of nouns obscures who proposed what. Restoring a clause makes the logical relationships visible.
Using a connector without the promised logic
- Wrong: 응답자는 120명이었다. 따라서 설문은 온라인으로 진행되었다.
- Right: 응답자는 120명이었으며, 설문은 온라인으로 진행되었다.
- Why: 따라서 means the second statement follows from the first. Use -으며 or a separate sentence when you are simply adding information.
Making unsupported claims too strong
- Too strong: 본 연구는 이 정책이 모든 지역에서 효과적임을 증명한다.
- Better: 본 연구의 결과는 이 정책이 조사 대상 지역에서 효과적일 가능성을 보여 준다.
- Why: Limit the claim to the population, method, and evidence actually studied. Hedging is most useful when it makes that boundary explicit.
Leaving the source of a claim unclear
- Unclear: 온라인 수업이 학습 효과를 높인다고 한다.
- Better: 이(2022)는 온라인 수업이 학습 효과를 높인다고 보고했다.
- Why: -다고 한다 can sound like hearsay when no source is named. Academic readers need to know whose finding or argument is being presented.
Usage Notes
Korean disciplines differ in their preferred terminology, sentence length, citation style, and tolerance for first-person reference. Humanities writing may foreground interpretation with -라고 볼 수 있다, while an empirical paper may repeatedly report what 나타났다, 관찰되었다, or 확인되었다. Follow the style guide and recent reputable publications in your field rather than assuming one formula fits every paper.
본 연구 “the present study” and 본고 “this paper” are conventional, but frequent repetition can sound mechanical. A sentence can often begin directly with its topic or method. Likewise, 우리 may refer to the authors, a scholarly community, or society more broadly; use it only when that group is genuinely clear.
Spacing and particles matter in dense prose. Compare 연구에 따르면 “according to the study,” 연구에 대해 “about the study,” and 연구를 바탕으로 “based on the study.” These are not interchangeable citation decorations. Also distinguish 결과로 “as a result/as an outcome” from the framing expression 분석 결과, “as a result of the analysis.”
English academic prose often uses abstract subjects such as “the paper argues” or “the data suggest.” Korean permits similar expressions—본고는 … 주장한다, 자료는 … 시사한다—but repeated literal transfer can feel formulaic. Choose a Korean predicate that describes the actual scholarly action and omit an unnecessary subject when context already identifies it.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Control distance from a proposition
Small grammatical choices show how fully the writer endorses a statement:
- X이다 presents X as the writer’s assertion.
- X라고 할 수 있다 frames X as a defensible characterization.
- X인 것으로 보인다 frames X as an evidence-based appearance.
- X라고 알려져 있다 presents X as established knowledge, though a citation may still be needed.
- X라고 주장되어 왔다 reports an ongoing scholarly claim without automatically endorsing it.
This distance is called stance—the writer’s position toward a claim. Good writing varies stance according to evidence and source, not simply to avoid commitment.
Separate finding, interpretation, and implication
A polished discussion section often moves through three distinct layers:
- Finding: 실험 집단의 평균 점수가 더 높게 나타났다.
- Interpretation: 이는 반복적 피드백의 영향으로 해석할 수 있다.
- Implication: 따라서 피드백 주기를 설계할 때 빈도를 고려할 필요가 있다.
Keeping these layers separate prevents an observed correlation from turning silently into a causal claim. Demonstratives such as 이는, 이러한 결과는, and 이 점은 can connect the layers, but each must have a clear antecedent (the earlier idea it points back to).
Use concession to qualify an argument
Advanced academic prose often acknowledges a limitation before preserving a narrower claim:
표본 규모가 작다는 한계가 있으나, 본 연구는 탐색적 자료를 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
Here -으나 gives a formal “although/while,” while -다는 점에서 states the precise respect in which the study remains significant. This is stronger than adding a vague hedge because it identifies both the limitation and the surviving contribution.
Prefer information flow over ornamental formality
Korean commonly places familiar context before new or important information. Begin with the source, condition, or topic, then deliver the finding: 기존 연구의 한계를 고려할 때, 본 연구의 결과는 두 가지 측면에서 의미가 있다. A paragraph is easier to follow when each sentence picks up a clearly named idea from the previous one. Formal vocabulary cannot compensate for unclear information flow.
Practice Tips
- Build a function-based phrase bank. Collect authentic expressions under headings such as purpose, citation, contrast, limitation, and implication. Save the whole sentence around each expression so you learn its particles and typical predicates.
- Revise claims on a strength scale. Rewrite one conclusion as X이다, X라고 볼 수 있다, X인 것으로 보인다, and X일 가능성이 있다. Then decide which version your evidence actually permits.
- Audit one paragraph at a time. Underline sources, circle connectors, and label each sentence “finding,” “interpretation,” or “implication.” Replace unnecessary passives and unpack any noun phrase you cannot understand on the first reading.
