Academic Indonesian

Bahasa Akademik

This article is part of the Indonesian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Academic Indonesian presents a claim, supports it with evidence, and marks how strongly the evidence justifies the conclusion. It favors complete standard forms, explicit links between ideas, careful source attribution, and impersonal or passive wording where the researcher is less important than the procedure or result. A strong text is not merely “formal”: it is precise about who claims what, on what basis, and with what limitations.

Overview

Bahasa akademik is the variety of formal Indonesian used in journal articles, theses, dissertations, conference papers, and research reports. At C2, the main challenge is not learning one new grammatical rule. It is coordinating grammar, vocabulary, paragraph structure, and stance so that a long argument remains clear and appropriately cautious.

English-speaking learners will recognize broad conventions such as abstracts, literature reviews, citations, and evidence-based conclusions. The details differ, however. Indonesian often uses nominalization (turning an action or quality into a noun-like expression), especially forms with peN-...-an and ke-...-an: menganalisis “to analyze” becomes analisis or penganalisisan, while berlanjut “to continue” can relate to keberlanjutan “sustainability/continuity.” It also makes frequent use of passives and impersonal expressions such as dapat disimpulkan “it can be concluded.” These resources create informational density, but overusing them can make prose unnecessarily heavy.

Academic Indonesian is built on ordinary formal Indonesian. Standard spelling, complete affixes, disciplined sentence structure, and formal vocabulary are prerequisites. Academic style adds a further requirement: every wording choice should clarify the relationship among the writer, the evidence, other scholars, and the conclusion.

How It Works

Organize the research argument

A thesis or article normally guides readers through a recognizable sequence. Exact headings depend on the institution and discipline, but these communicative functions are widespread:

Function Common Indonesian heading or phrase Purpose
Abstract Abstrak Summarizes the problem, method, main result, and conclusion
Introduction Pendahuluan Establishes the topic, problem, significance, and aim
Literature review Tinjauan pustaka / Kajian pustaka Positions the study in relation to previous work
Method Metode penelitian Explains data, participants, materials, and procedure
Results Hasil penelitian Reports findings
Discussion Pembahasan Interprets findings and connects them to the research question
Conclusion Simpulan or Kesimpulan Answers the research question and states implications
References Daftar pustaka Lists cited sources

A section should not be just a collection of true statements. Paragraphs typically move from a controlling point to evidence or explanation, then to an interpretation or transition. Useful framing expressions include penelitian ini bertujuan untuk... “this study aims to...,” berdasarkan hasil analisis... “based on the analysis results...,” and temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa... “this finding indicates that....”

Distinguish claims from evidence

Academic writing continually signals the source and strength of a statement. A hedge is wording that deliberately limits certainty. Hedging is not evasiveness; it prevents the text from claiming more than the evidence supports.

Degree or function Useful pattern Typical force
Strong conclusion Temuan ini membuktikan bahwa... Claims proof; use only when genuinely justified
Evidence-based claim Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa... Presents a result as supporting a conclusion
Cautious interpretation Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa... Suggests an interpretation without treating it as final
Explicit possibility Ada kemungkinan bahwa... Marks a possible explanation
Limited tendency Data tersebut cenderung menunjukkan... Reports a tendency rather than a categorical result
Scope limitation Dalam konteks penelitian ini... Restricts the claim to the present setting
Qualification Sejauh data yang tersedia... Limits the claim to available evidence

Choose the verb carefully. Membuktikan “proves” is stronger than menunjukkan “shows,” which is usually stronger than mengindikasikan “indicates.” Adding dapat can mark possibility, but it is not a universal academic decoration: dapat ditafsirkan sebagai... means “can be interpreted as...,” not simply “is interpreted as....”

Attribute sources explicitly

A citation must make the ownership of an idea clear. Indonesian offers several natural frames:

  • Menurut Siregar (2024), ... — “According to Siregar (2024), ...”
  • Siregar (2024) berpendapat bahwa ... — “Siregar (2024) argues that ...”
  • Sebagaimana dikemukakan oleh Siregar (2024), ... — “As stated by Siregar (2024), ...”
  • Temuan ini sejalan dengan penelitian Siregar (2024). — “This finding is consistent with Siregar’s study (2024).”
  • Berbeda dengan temuan Siregar (2024), penelitian ini ... — “Unlike Siregar’s findings (2024), this study ....”

Menurut normally takes a source directly: menurut penulis, menurut teori tersebut, menurut Siregar. Because menurut already means “according to,” menurut pandangan penulis is understandable and occurs in formal prose, but menurut penulis or dalam pandangan penulis is usually more economical.

Citation grammar and citation format are separate issues. Whether a field requires APA, IEEE, footnotes, page numbers, or another system is determined by the journal or institution. Grammar cannot replace accurate references, and paraphrasing still requires attribution.

Use passive and impersonal constructions purposefully

The passive voice presents the participant affected by an action before, or instead of, the actor. In data dianalisis dengan..., “the data” is foregrounded and the analyst may be omitted because the procedure matters more.

Pattern Example Focus
di- passive Data dianalisis secara kualitatif. The data and procedure
Modal + passive Temuan ini dapat dijelaskan melalui dua faktor. A possible explanation
Necessity + passive Perlu diperhatikan bahwa sampel terbatas. A point requiring attention
Resultative passive Tiga kategori telah diidentifikasi. A completed analytical result
Active researcher subject Peneliti mengelompokkan data ke dalam tiga kategori. The researcher’s deliberate action
Study as subject Penelitian ini mengkaji perubahan tersebut. The scope and activity of the study

Academic Indonesian does not require every sentence to be passive. Use an active clause when the actor’s decision, interpretation, or responsibility matters. Peneliti memilih lima lokasi is clearer than an agentless passive if the choice itself must be justified.

Build density with nominalization—without hiding the action

Nominal expressions let writers define concepts and connect complex ideas:

  • meningkatpeningkatan (“to increase” → “an increase”)
  • mengembangkanpengembangan (“to develop” → “development”)
  • tersediaketersediaan (“available” → “availability”)
  • berkelanjutankeberlanjutan (“sustainable/continuous” → “sustainability/continuity”)

Compare Harga meningkat karena permintaan bertambah with Peningkatan harga berkaitan dengan pertambahan permintaan. The second version packages both processes as concepts and allows the writer to discuss their relationship. It is not automatically better. If several nominalizations obscure who did what, restore a verb.

Connect logical steps

Connectors should express a real logical relation, not merely make a paragraph sound sophisticated.

Relationship Common connectors
Addition selain itu, lebih lanjut, di samping itu
Contrast namun, sebaliknya, meskipun demikian
Cause or basis karena, oleh karena itu, berdasarkan
Consequence dengan demikian, akibatnya
Reformulation dengan kata lain
Example misalnya, sebagai contoh
Sequence pertama, selanjutnya, pada tahap berikutnya
Summary singkatnya, secara keseluruhan

Pay attention to structure. Berdasarkan needs a basis: berdasarkan data tersebut. Oleh karena itu introduces a consequence. Meskipun normally introduces a dependent clause and needs a contrasting main clause: Meskipun sampelnya kecil, pola yang sama muncul pada ketiga kelompok.

Examples in Context

Indonesian English Note
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi partisipasi mahasiswa. This study aims to identify the factors that affect student participation. States the research aim precisely.
Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa akses terhadap bahan ajar berhubungan dengan hasil belajar. Research shows that access to learning materials is associated with learning outcomes. Reports a research-based relationship without claiming causation.
Hasil analisis menunjukkan adanya perbedaan yang konsisten antara kedua kelompok. The analysis results indicate a consistent difference between the two groups. Adanya presents the existence of a difference.
Menurut pandangan penulis, perubahan tersebut perlu dipahami dalam konteks sosialnya. According to the author’s view, the change needs to be understood in its social context. Possible, though menurut penulis is more concise.
Menurut Rahmawati (2023), kebijakan tersebut belum menjangkau semua wilayah. According to Rahmawati (2023), the policy has not yet reached every region. Attributes the claim directly.
Temuan ini sejalan dengan hasil penelitian sebelumnya. This finding is consistent with the results of previous research. Connects the result to the literature.
Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur dan dianalisis secara tematik. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. Passive wording foregrounds method and data.
Ada kemungkinan bahwa perbedaan tersebut dipengaruhi oleh ukuran sampel. It is possible that the difference was influenced by sample size. Marks a tentative explanation.
Dalam konteks penelitian ini, istilah “literasi” dibatasi pada kemampuan memahami teks tertulis. In this study, the term “literacy” is limited to the ability to understand written texts. Defines the scope of a term.
Meskipun demikian, hasil tersebut tidak dapat digeneralisasi ke seluruh populasi. Nevertheless, those results cannot be generalized to the entire population. States an important limitation.
Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa intervensi memberikan manfaat jangka pendek. Based on those findings, it can be concluded that the intervention provides a short-term benefit. Links the conclusion explicitly to evidence.
Dengan demikian, penelitian lanjutan diperlukan untuk menguji keberlanjutan dampak tersebut. Therefore, further research is needed to test whether that effect is sustained. Draws an implication and proposes a next step.

Common Mistakes

Treating a correlation as a cause

  • Wrong: Data tersebut membuktikan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi menyebabkan peningkatan nilai.
  • Right: Data tersebut menunjukkan adanya hubungan antara penggunaan aplikasi dan peningkatan nilai.
  • Why: If the design only establishes an association, membuktikan and menyebabkan overstate the evidence. Match the verb to the research design.

Adding formal words without a logical function

  • Wrong: Namun, hasil kedua mendukung hipotesis yang sama. (when no contrast precedes it)
  • Right: Selain itu, hasil kedua mendukung hipotesis yang sama.
  • Why: Namun means “however” and must mark a contrast. Selain itu adds supporting information.

Leaving the source of a claim unclear

  • Wrong: Telah diketahui bahwa metode ini paling efektif.
  • Right: Sejumlah penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode ini efektif dalam konteks pembelajaran daring.
  • Why: The revision identifies the evidence base and limits the scope. An agentless phrase such as “it is known” can conceal an unsupported assertion.

Mixing conversational and academic register

  • Wrong: Hasilnya nggak begitu bagus karena responden cuma sedikit.
  • Right: Hasilnya belum meyakinkan karena jumlah responden terbatas.
  • Why: Nggak and conversational cuma are inappropriate in a formal paper. Formal wording also states the limitation more precisely.

Overloading the sentence with nominalizations

  • Wrong: Pelaksanaan peningkatan pengembangan kemampuan mahasiswa dilakukan melalui penyelenggaraan pelatihan.
  • Right: Program pelatihan ini dirancang untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa.
  • Why: A chain of abstract nouns hides the main action. A clear verb often produces stronger academic prose.

Using di mana as a general-purpose connector

  • Wrong: Penelitian ini menggunakan dua kelompok, di mana kelompok pertama menerima perlakuan.
  • Right: Penelitian ini menggunakan dua kelompok. Kelompok pertama menerima perlakuan.
  • Why: In careful formal Indonesian, di mana is primarily locative (“where”), not a substitute for every English relative connector. Recast the sentence or choose a specific relation.

Usage Notes

Institutional conventions vary. Indonesian universities and journals may prefer simpulan or kesimpulan, different abstract structures, and different policies on first-person forms. Follow the relevant style guide rather than assuming one universal template.

The writer can be represented as penulis “the author,” peneliti “the researcher,” kami “we,” or sometimes saya “I.” Impersonal writing is common, but avoiding the first person at all costs can create awkward passives. In a co-authored article, kami berpendapat may be entirely appropriate if the venue permits it. In a single-author thesis, kami should not be used merely to sound scholarly unless local convention explicitly supports that choice.

Academic vocabulary should be precise, not inflated. Menggunakan is often clearer than a needlessly bureaucratic alternative; tentang may be preferable to perihal outside administrative contexts. Preserve full standard affixes—memengaruhi, menganalisis, dikelompokkan—and consult current Indonesian spelling and institutional terminology when proofreading.

Beyond the Basics: Managing Voice and Argument

Advanced academic style makes multiple voices visible. A literature review distinguishes what a source reports, what the present data show, and what the writer infers. Compare these layers:

  1. Wibowo (2022) menemukan bahwa partisipasi menurun. — a previous researcher’s finding.
  2. Data penelitian ini menunjukkan pola yang serupa. — the present evidence.
  3. Kesamaan tersebut mungkin mencerminkan perubahan kebiasaan belajar. — the current writer’s interpretation.

Keeping those layers separate protects the argument from accidental plagiarism and unjustified certainty. Reporting verbs add nuance: menyatakan “states,” mengemukakan “puts forward,” berpendapat “argues/is of the view,” menegaskan “emphasizes/asserts,” and mempertanyakan “questions.” Do not choose a stronger verb merely for variety; it should accurately represent the source’s stance.

Skilled writers also use metadiscourse—language that guides the reader through the text. Phrases such as pada bagian berikut, sebagaimana telah dijelaskan, and perlu dibedakan antara X dan Y tell readers how pieces of the argument fit together. Use them where the structure genuinely needs guidance. Repeating berdasarkan uraian di atas at the end of every section turns guidance into clutter.

Finally, revise for information flow. Indonesian allows a topic to appear early so that familiar information leads into new information: Tiga keterbatasan ditemukan dalam penelitian ini. Keterbatasan pertama berkaitan dengan ukuran sampel. This progression is often clearer than introducing a new subject in every sentence. Pronouns and demonstratives such as hal ini, temuan tersebut, and pendekatan ini can maintain continuity, but each must have an unmistakable referent.

Practice Tips

  1. Build a phrase bank by function. Collect separate groups for aims, methods, source attribution, contrast, limitation, interpretation, and conclusion. Record a full sentence with each phrase so you remember its grammar, not just the expression.
  2. Audit the strength of every claim. Highlight membuktikan, menunjukkan, mengindikasikan, mungkin, and cenderung. Ask whether each one matches the evidence and whether the scope is explicit.
  3. Reverse-outline a published paragraph. Beside each sentence, write “claim,” “evidence,” “citation,” “interpretation,” or “transition.” Then imitate the logical sequence with your own topic rather than copying its wording.
