Advanced Sentence Connectors in German

Satzkonnektoren (fortgeschritten)

This article is part of the German grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

German connectors do more than join ideas: they identify a relationship such as means, result, added reason, condition, limitation, or rejected alternative. Indem, zumal, sofern, als in insofern … als, and anstatt dass introduce subordinate clauses, so the conjugated verb goes at the end. Infolgedessen, however, begins or occupies a position in a main clause and is followed by normal verb-second order: Infolgedessen blieben wir zu Hause.

Overview

At earlier levels, connectors such as weil, dass, aber, and deshalb let you express basic reason, content, contrast, and result. At C1, you need to make the relationship between statements more exact. Did one action provide the means for another? Is a reason being added to an already convincing argument? Does a claim apply only in one respect? Advanced connectors make those distinctions explicit.

This article focuses on six useful patterns: indem for means, infolgedessen for a consequence, zumal for an additional strong reason, sofern for a condition, insofern … als for a qualified statement, and anstatt dass for an unrealized or criticized alternative. They are especially valuable in reports, formal discussion, academic prose, and careful professional speech, although several also occur naturally in everyday German.

For an English-speaking learner, the largest visible difference is word order. A subordinate clause (a dependent clause attached to a larger sentence) normally puts its conjugated verb at the end. A main clause can stand independently and follows the verb-second rule: the conjugated verb occupies the second grammatical position, even when the first position contains a connector rather than the subject.

How It Works

First identify the connector type

The meaning alone does not tell you the word order. Compare the two ways of expressing a result:

  • Es regnete, sodass wir zu Hause blieben. Here sodass introduces a subordinate clause; blieben is final.
  • Es regnete. Infolgedessen blieben wir zu Hause. Here infolgedessen occupies the first position of a new main clause; blieben comes before the subject.
Connector Core meaning Clause type Basic pattern
indem by; by means of subordinate main clause, indem + … + verb
infolgedessen consequently; as a result main-clause adverb infolgedessen + verb + subject + …
zumal especially since; all the more because subordinate statement, zumal + … + verb
sofern provided that; as long as subordinate sofern + … + verb, main clause
insofern … als insofar as; to the extent that paired qualification claim is true insofern, als + … + verb
anstatt dass instead of someone doing something subordinate main clause, anstatt dass + … + verb

When a subordinate clause comes first, the whole clause fills the first position of the following main clause. The main-clause verb therefore comes immediately after the comma:

  • Sofern alle Unterlagen vollständig sind, bearbeiten wir den Antrag heute.
  • Not: Sofern alle Unterlagen vollständig sind, wir bearbeiten …

Indem: show the means or method

Indem answers the question Wie? (“How?” or “By what means?”). It presents an action or process as the method by which the main-clause result is achieved.

  • Sie verbessert ihre Aussprache, indem sie laut vorliest.
  • Der Betrieb senkte den Verbrauch, indem er die Anlagen modernisierte.

English often uses by + -ing, but German needs a finite clause: indem + subject + verb at the end. The subordinate clause may come first: Indem sie jeden Tag übte, gewann sie Sicherheit. In careful writing, make sure the method genuinely produces or enables the result; indem is not merely a decorative substitute for und or während.

Infolgedessen: state a consequence

Infolgedessen points back to a fact and presents the next statement as its consequence. Grammatically, it is a conjunctive adverb (an adverb that links one main clause to the preceding context), not a subordinating conjunction.

  • Mehrere Züge fielen aus. Infolgedessen kamen viele Beschäftigte zu spät.
  • Die Nachfrage ist gesunken; die Produktion wurde infolgedessen reduziert.

At the start of a clause, it occupies position 1 and triggers subject–verb inversion from an English perspective: infolgedessen kamen viele, not infolgedessen viele kamen. It can also appear later in the clause, where normal main-clause order remains: Viele Beschäftigte kamen infolgedessen zu spät.

Zumal: add a particularly relevant reason

Zumal introduces a reason that strengthens a statement already supported by the context. It often corresponds to “especially since,” “particularly as,” or sometimes “all the more because.”

  • Wir sollten den Termin verschieben, zumal zwei Mitglieder fehlen.

The proposal is already reasonable; the absence of two members gives it extra weight. Because zumal introduces a subordinate clause, the conjugated verb is final. It is less neutral than weil: if you are simply giving the only reason, weil is usually the clearer choice.

Sofern: set a condition

Sofern means “provided that,” “as long as,” or “if,” and is common in formal conditions, rules, agreements, and cautious statements.

  • Sofern Sie einverstanden sind, veröffentlichen wir den Bericht morgen.
  • Die Daten dürfen verwendet werden, sofern die Betroffenen zugestimmt haben.

Compared with general wenn, sofern highlights that the statement is valid only under the named condition. Sofern nicht often means “unless”: Sofern nichts dazwischenkommt, treffen wir uns am Freitag means “Unless something intervenes, we’ll meet on Friday.” Do not confuse that construction with a positive condition followed by an unrelated negation.

Insofern … als: qualify the scope of a claim

The paired construction insofern … als means “insofar as” or “to the extent that.” It first signals that a statement is true in a limited respect; the als clause then names that respect.

  • Der Einwand ist insofern berechtigt, als die Frist sehr knapp bemessen war.

The claim is not “the objection is entirely justified.” It is justified specifically because—or to the extent that—the deadline was very tight. The comma before als is required, and the verb in the als clause goes to the end. In contemporary prose, the elements normally appear as the correlation insofern …, als …; keeping this shape makes a complex qualification easy to follow.

Do not use insofern als merely as an elevated replacement for weil. It limits or defines the validity of the preceding claim. If no limitation is intended, weil, da, or a result connector will usually be more accurate.

Anstatt dass: contrast reality with an alternative

Anstatt dass introduces an action that would have been expected or preferable but does not happen. The subjects of the two clauses may differ:

  • Anstatt dass der Vermieter die Heizung repariert, sollen die Mieter weitere Formulare ausfüllen.

When both parts have the same subject, German usually prefers anstatt zu + infinitive (the basic verb form with zu) because it is shorter:

  • Er beschwerte sich, anstatt zuzuhören.

Use anstatt dass when an explicit subject is needed, especially when the subjects differ or when the full clause creates a useful contrast: Anstatt dass sie uns unterstützt hätte, schwieg sie. The variant statt dass has the same grammar and is often slightly more concise.

Examples in Context

German English Note
Er lernt Deutsch, indem er viel liest. He learns German by reading a lot. indem presents the method.
Indem wir die Abläufe vereinfachen, sparen wir Zeit und Geld. By simplifying the processes, we save time and money. Initial subordinate clause; sparen follows the comma.
Die Ärztin erklärte den Befund, indem sie die Aufnahme Schritt für Schritt zeigte. The doctor explained the findings by showing the scan step by step. A concrete means of explaining.
Es regnete den ganzen Tag. Infolgedessen blieben wir zu Hause. It rained all day. Consequently, we stayed home. Main-clause verb blieben precedes the subject.
Ein Bauteil war beschädigt; die Lieferung verzögerte sich infolgedessen um eine Woche. A component was damaged; as a result, the delivery was delayed by a week. Connector in the middle field.
Die Wohnung kommt kaum infrage, zumal die nächste Haltestelle weit entfernt ist. The apartment is hardly an option, especially since the nearest stop is far away. An added reason strengthens the judgment.
Wir können heute früher Schluss machen, zumal alle Aufgaben erledigt sind. We can finish early today, especially since all the tasks are done. sind is final.
Sofern Sie einverstanden sind, schicke ich den Vertrag an die Rechtsabteilung. Provided that you agree, I’ll send the contract to the legal department. Formal condition.
Eine Erstattung ist möglich, sofern der Antrag fristgerecht eingeht. A refund is possible provided that the application arrives on time. Typical administrative register.
Sofern keine weiteren Fragen bestehen, beenden wir die Sitzung. Unless there are any further questions, we will close the meeting. Literally a condition involving keine.
Die Kritik ist insofern nachvollziehbar, als die Entscheidung nicht begründet wurde. The criticism is understandable insofar as the decision was not explained. The als clause defines the relevant respect.
Der Versuch war insofern erfolgreich, als er zuverlässige Daten lieferte. The experiment was successful to the extent that it produced reliable data. A deliberately limited assessment.
Anstatt dass die Software Zeit spart, verursacht sie zusätzliche Arbeit. Instead of saving time, the software creates additional work. Full clause highlights the failed expectation.
Anstatt dass du alles allein erledigst, könnten wir die Aufgaben verteilen. Instead of you doing everything alone, we could divide up the tasks. Different subjects make a full clause natural.
Sie unterbrach ihn ständig, anstatt zuzuhören. She constantly interrupted him instead of listening. Same subject: infinitive construction preferred.

Common Mistakes

Treating infolgedessen like a subordinating conjunction

  • Wrong: Es gab einen Stromausfall, infolgedessen die Sitzung später begann.
  • Right: Es gab einen Stromausfall. Infolgedessen begann die Sitzung später.
  • Why: Infolgedessen belongs to a main clause. In first position, it is followed by the conjugated verb, then the subject.

Keeping English word order after an initial subordinate clause

  • Wrong: Sofern die Zahlung eingeht, wir versenden die Ware sofort.
  • Right: Sofern die Zahlung eingeht, versenden wir die Ware sofort.
  • Why: The entire sofern clause occupies position 1; versenden must therefore be the next element.

Using indem for a simple sequence

  • Wrong: Er öffnete die Tür, indem er ins Büro ging.
  • Right: Er öffnete die Tür und ging ins Büro.
  • Why: Walking into the office is a following action, not the means used to open the door. Use indem only when the subordinate action explains how the result is achieved.

Using zumal as a neutral equivalent of weil

  • Awkward: Ich blieb zu Hause, zumal ich krank war.
  • Natural for one basic reason: Ich blieb zu Hause, weil ich krank war.
  • Natural added reason: Ich wollte ohnehin zu Hause bleiben, zumal ich krank war.
  • Why: Zumal normally adds an especially relevant reason to an existing argument or situation.

Losing the limiting force of insofern … als

  • Misleading: Der Plan ist insofern gut, als wir ihn morgen umsetzen.
  • Clear limitation: Der Plan ist insofern gut, als er kurzfristig umsetzbar ist.
  • Why: The als clause should identify the respect in which the assessment is valid, not merely report what happens next.

Overusing anstatt dass with one subject

  • Heavy: Sie ging, anstatt dass sie sich verabschiedete.
  • More natural: Sie ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden.
  • Alternative with “instead”: Sie diskutierte weiter, anstatt sich zu entschuldigen.
  • Why: With the same subject, an infinitive construction is normally more economical. Also choose ohne zu when the intended meaning is simply “without doing,” rather than “instead of doing.”

Usage Notes

Register matters. Indem is neutral and widely useful. Zumal occurs in both educated conversation and writing, but it sounds more argumentative than everyday weil. Sofern, infolgedessen, and insofern … als are particularly common in formal, analytical, legal, and administrative contexts. In casual speech, speakers often choose wenn, deshalb, or a simpler explanation instead.

Punctuation reflects clause structure. Put a comma between a main clause and a subordinate clause introduced by indem, zumal, sofern, or anstatt dass. In insofern …, als …, place the comma before als. Independent clauses linked by infolgedessen can be separated by a full stop or semicolon; a comma alone between two complete main clauses is best avoided in careful prose.

Connector position affects emphasis. An initial conditional clause sets the frame before the message: Sofern die Mittel bewilligt werden, beginnt das Projekt im Mai. A final clause presents the message first and adds the restriction afterward: Das Projekt beginnt im Mai, sofern die Mittel bewilligt werden. Both are grammatical, but the information flow differs.

Avoid stacking formal connectors for prestige. A sentence containing several expressions such as insofern, infolgedessen, and zumal may become difficult to process even when grammatically correct. C1 writing is precise, not needlessly ornate. Split long reasoning into separate sentences when each logical step deserves attention.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Choose connectors by logical direction

Reason and result describe the same event chain from opposite directions:

  • Wir blieben zu Hause, weil es regnete: the subordinate clause gives the cause.
  • Es regnete; infolgedessen blieben wir zu Hause: the second main clause gives the result.

Likewise, indem does not explain why someone wanted a result; it explains the means used to obtain it. Compare Sie überzeugte das Team, weil ihr der Plan wichtig war (motivation) with Sie überzeugte das Team, indem sie konkrete Zahlen präsentierte (method).

Distinguish condition from temporal repetition

English if and German wenn cover many situations. Sofern is narrower: it foregrounds a condition that must be satisfied. It is therefore appropriate for permissions, promises, procedures, and carefully limited claims. For repeated past events, use wenn rather than sofern: Wenn wir früher dort waren, gingen wir immer zu Fuß.

Use qualifications to avoid overclaiming

Insofern … als is a useful argumentative tool because it allows partial agreement:

  • Ich stimme Ihnen insofern zu, als mehr Transparenz nötig ist.

This does not necessarily accept the other person’s entire position. It states exactly where agreement ends. A related standalone use is insofern meaning “in that respect” or “therefore in that respect”: Die Finanzierung ist gesichert. Insofern besteht kein Handlungsbedarf. Here there is no following als clause because the relevant respect is already clear from context.

Recognize alternatives without treating them as exact synonyms

Dadurch, dass can often replace instrumental indem: Er senkte die Kosten dadurch, dass er neu verhandelte. It is longer and can give the method more explicit focus. Deshalb, daher, and folglich can express a result like infolgedessen, but differ in register and emphasis; folglich often sounds like a logical conclusion, while infolgedessen highlights an actual consequence. Falls is close to conditional sofern, though sofern often sounds more formal and restrictive.

Practice Tips

  1. Sort before translating. Label each idea pair “means,” “result,” “added reason,” “condition,” “qualification,” or “alternative.” Then choose the connector. This prevents you from selecting a word merely because its English translation looks familiar.
  2. Mark the verb slots. When drafting, underline the conjugated verbs. Circle a subordinate connector and check that its verb is final; circle infolgedessen and check that the main-clause verb remains in second position.
  3. Rewrite one argument six ways. Take a short workplace or news paragraph and add one sentence with each connector. Read it aloud afterward and replace any formal connector that does not express a real logical distinction.
