Conjunctions in Chinese

连词

Overview

Chinese conjunctions (连词, liáncí) connect words, phrases, and clauses. Unlike English where a single word "and" handles most connections, Chinese uses different connectors depending on what is being joined. Most distinctively, Chinese conjunctions often come in pairs: 因为...所以 (because...so), 虽然...但是 (although...but), 如果...就 (if...then).

At the CEFR A2 level, learning the major paired conjunctions allows you to express cause-effect, contrast, and conditional relationships -- a significant step up from simple sentences. These paired patterns are one of the most characteristic features of Chinese sentence structure.

A key rule: 和 (hé, and) only connects nouns or noun phrases. It CANNOT connect clauses the way English "and" does. To connect clauses, Chinese uses different structures.

How It Works

Paired conjunctions

Chinese Pinyin Meaning Pattern
因为...所以 yīnwèi...suǒyǐ because...so cause → result
虽然...但是 suīrán...dànshì although...but concession → contrast
如果...就 rúguǒ...jiù if...then condition → result
不但...而且 búdàn...érqiě not only...but also addition
一边...一边 yìbiān...yìbiān while...also simultaneous

Simple connectors

Chinese Pinyin Meaning Connects
and nouns ONLY
但是 / 可是 dànshì / kěshì but clauses
或者 huòzhě or nouns/clauses
还是 háishi or (in questions) question alternatives
然后 ránhòu then/after that sequential clauses
所以 suǒyǐ so/therefore result clause

Important: 和 connects nouns (我和他), NOT clauses. For clauses, use other connectors or simply juxtapose them.

Examples in Context

Chinese Pinyin English Note
我喜欢茶和咖啡。 Wǒ xǐhuān chá hé kāfēi. I like tea and coffee. 和 for nouns
虽然很难,但是我要试试。 Suīrán hěn nán, dànshì wǒ yào shìshi. Although hard, I'll try. concession
因为下雨,所以我没去。 Yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒ méi qù. Because it rained, I didn't go. cause-effect
如果你来,我就高兴。 Rúguǒ nǐ lái, wǒ jiù gāoxìng. If you come, I'll be happy. conditional
他很聪明,但是不用功。 Tā hěn cōngmíng, dànshì bù yònggōng. He's smart but not hardworking. contrast
你要茶还是咖啡? Nǐ yào chá háishi kāfēi? Tea or coffee? question choice
我先吃饭,然后去学校。 Wǒ xiān chī fàn, ránhòu qù xuéxiào. I eat first, then go to school. sequence
不但好看,而且好吃。 Búdàn hǎokàn, érqiě hǎochī. Not only looks good, but tastes good. addition
我一边走一边听音乐。 Wǒ yìbiān zǒu yìbiān tīng yīnyuè. I listen to music while walking. simultaneous
他很忙,所以没来。 Tā hěn máng, suǒyǐ méi lái. He's busy, so he didn't come. result

Common Mistakes

Using 和 to connect clauses

  • Wrong: 我吃了饭和去了学校。(I ate and went to school.)
  • Right: 我吃了饭,然后去了学校。or simply: 我吃了饭,去了学校。
  • Why: 和 only connects nouns or noun phrases, never clauses. Use 然后 or comma juxtaposition for clause connection.

Using only half of paired conjunctions

  • Wrong: 因为下雨,我没去。(missing 所以)
  • Right: 因为下雨,所以我没去。
  • Why: While the first half can sometimes be dropped, dropping the second half (especially 所以) is less natural in Chinese. The pairs work together.

Confusing 或者 and 还是

  • Wrong: 你要茶或者咖啡? (in a question)
  • Right: 你要茶还是咖啡? (还是 for questions)
  • Why: 还是 is used in questions (choosing between options); 或者 is used in statements.

Practice Tips

  • Memorize paired conjunctions as units: always practice both halves together. Write 因为...所以 on one flashcard, not separately.
  • Practice converting simple sentences into compound ones: 下雨了 + 我没去 → 因为下雨了,所以我没去。
  • Remember the 和 rule: test yourself by checking whether you are connecting nouns or clauses. If clauses, use a different connector.
