Passive-like Constructions

About this concept

Yoruba has no morphological passive. Instead, it uses: subjectless constructions (wọ́n... 'they/one'), topicalization, or the verb di (become) for resulting states. Context determines the agent.

In Settemila Lingue, this concept generates a practice deck of ~30 cards at level B2.

Examples

Wọ́n kọ ilé náà ní ọdún 1990.The house was built in 1990. (lit. They built...)
A pa á.He/She was killed. (lit. One killed him/her)
Ilé náà ti di ahoro.The house has become ruins. (resultative)
Wọ́n fi í sílẹ̀.He/She was released. (lit. They let him/her go)
