Verbal Prefixes in Ukrainian
Overview
Verbal prefixes are one of the most productive word-formation mechanisms in Ukrainian. At the CEFR C1 level, understanding how prefixes modify verb meaning is essential for expanding your vocabulary exponentially and for comprehending the vast network of derived verbs that pervade Ukrainian speech and writing.
Each prefix carries a core spatial or abstract meaning that combines with the base verb to create a new lexical item. Adding a prefix to an imperfective verb typically creates a perfective verb, which then needs a new imperfective partner (usually formed with a secondary suffix). This interplay between prefixes and aspect is central to the Ukrainian verbal system.
Ukrainian has over 20 productive verbal prefixes, each with multiple shades of meaning depending on the base verb.
How It Works
Core Prefixes and Their Meanings
| Prefix | Core Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ви- | out | виходити (go out) |
| при- | toward, arrival | приходити (arrive) |
| від- | away from | відходити (depart) |
| про- | through | проходити (pass through) |
| за- | begin; behind | заспівати (start singing) |
| до- | completion; up to | дочитати (finish reading) |
| пере- | across; re- | переписати (rewrite) |
| по- | begin; a little | побігти (start running) |
| на- | on, upon | написати (write, perf) |
| роз- | apart, dispersal | розповісти (tell, relate) |
| з-/с- | down; together | зробити (do, perf) |
| у-/в- | into | увійти (enter) |
| об- | around | обійти (go around) |
| під- | under; approach | підійти (approach) |
| над- | above; excess | надписати (inscribe) |
Prefix + Aspect Interaction
Base verb (imperf) → Prefix adds (perf) → New imperfective formed:
- писати (write, imperf) → написати (write, perf) → (no secondary imperf needed -- писати serves)
- ходити → виходити (go out, imperf) → вийти (go out, perf)
Examples in Context
| Ukrainian | English | Note |

| відходити | to leave/depart | від- = away |
| переписати | to rewrite | пере- = re- |
| заспівати | to start singing | за- = begin |
| дочитати | to finish reading | до- = completion |
| розповісти | to tell (a story) | роз- = apart/spreading |
| підійти | to approach | під- = under/toward |
| обійти | to go around | об- = around |
| увійти | to enter | у- = into |
Common Mistakes
Assuming one prefix = one meaning
- Wrong: Thinking за- always means "begin."
- Right: За- can mean "begin" (заспівати), "behind" (заховати = hide), or serve as a perfectivizer (запитати = ask).
- Why: Each prefix has multiple meanings that depend on the base verb.
Creating non-existent prefixed forms
- Wrong: навиходити (stacking prefixes randomly)
- Right: Only established combinations exist. Check a dictionary.
- Why: Not every prefix-verb combination is valid.
Ignoring aspect change
- Wrong: Using a prefixed verb as imperfective.
- Right: Most prefixed verbs are perfective; learn their imperfective counterparts.
- Why: Prefixation typically changes aspect from imperfective to perfective.
Usage Notes
Understanding prefixes unlocks vocabulary comprehension. If you know the base verb and the prefix meaning, you can often deduce the meaning of an unfamiliar prefixed verb. This makes prefix knowledge one of the highest-leverage skills at C1.
Some prefixes serve purely as perfectivizers (adding completion without changing meaning): писати → написати, робити → зробити. Others genuinely change the lexical meaning: писати (write) → переписати (rewrite), приписати (attribute), описати (describe).
Practice Tips
- Prefix families: Take one base verb (e.g., ходити) and list all prefixed forms with meanings.
- Prefix meaning maps: For each prefix, collect five examples showing different meaning shades.
- Deduction practice: Encounter new prefixed verbs and guess meaning from prefix + base before checking.
