Present Tense (Conjugation I) in Ukrainian

Теперішній Час (I дієвідміна)

Overview

Ukrainian verbs are divided into two main conjugation classes, and the first conjugation is the larger and more common group. At the CEFR A1 level, learning the first conjugation endings lets you express a wide range of present-tense actions, states, and habitual activities using hundreds of everyday verbs.

First conjugation verbs are characterized by the vowel -е- (or -є- after vowels and soft consonants) in their personal endings. Common verbs in this class include читати (to read), писати (to write), знати (to know), працювати (to work), and жити (to live).

Ukrainian present tense covers both the English simple present ("I read") and present continuous ("I am reading"), since Ukrainian does not have a separate progressive form. Context and adverbs clarify whether an action is habitual or ongoing.

How It Works

First Conjugation Endings

Person Singular Plural
1st -у / -ю -емо / -ємо
2nd -еш / -єш -ете / -єте
3rd -е / -є -уть / -ють

Example: читати (to read)

Person Singular Plural
1st читаю читаємо
2nd читаєш читаєте
3rd читає читають

Example: писати (to write) -- with stem change

Person Singular Plural
1st пишу пишемо
2nd пишеш пишете
3rd пише пишуть

Note: писати undergoes a consonant alternation (с → ш) in the present tense stem. Many first conjugation verbs have such stem changes.

Common First Conjugation Verbs

знати (know), жити (live), працювати (work), купувати (buy), називати (call), іти (go), нести (carry)

Common Mistakes

Using second conjugation endings

  • Wrong: Я читю. or Ти читиш.
  • Right: Я читаю. Ти читаєш.
  • Why: Читати is first conjugation. Second conjugation has -иш/-ить endings.

Missing stem changes

  • Wrong: Я писаю.
  • Right: Я пишу.
  • Why: Many first conjugation verbs change their stem consonant in the present tense.

Forgetting the soft variant

  • Wrong: Ми знаемо.
  • Right: Ми знаємо.
  • Why: After vowels, the endings use the soft variant: -ємо, -єш, -є, -єте, -ють.

Usage Notes

First conjugation covers the majority of Ukrainian verbs. The key to success is learning not just the infinitive but also the first-person singular present form, since that reveals any stem changes. Dictionaries typically list both forms.

Ukrainian present tense does not distinguish between habitual and progressive aspects. "Читаю" can mean both "I read (in general)" and "I am reading (right now)." Adverbs like зараз (now), завжди (always), or щодня (every day) clarify the meaning.

Practice Tips

  1. Learn verbs in pairs: Memorize both the infinitive and the first-person present form (читати / читаю, писати / пишу) to capture any stem changes.

  2. Full conjugation drills: Pick five common verbs and conjugate them fully across all six person-number forms.

  3. Daily routine narration: Describe your daily routine using first conjugation verbs: "Я встаю, снідаю, працюю, читаю, лягаю."
