Numeral Categories in Ukrainian

Overview

Beyond cardinal and ordinal numbers, Ukrainian has several specialized numeral categories that express different quantitative meanings. At the CEFR B2 level, understanding collective numerals (двоє, троє), multiplicative numerals (двічі, тричі), fractional numerals (половина, третина), and indefinite quantifiers (декілька, багато) is necessary for precise and natural quantitative expression.

Each category has its own grammatical rules for agreement with nouns, and some are used in contexts where English would simply use cardinal numbers. Collective numerals, in particular, are a distinctive Slavic feature with no English equivalent.

Collective Numerals (двоє, троє, четверо...)

Used with: pluralia tantum nouns, paired objects, people (mixed groups), young animals.

Common Mistakes

Using cardinals with pluralia tantum

• Wrong: два дверей
• Right: двоє дверей
• Why: Pluralia tantum nouns require collective numerals.

Wrong gender of півтора

• Wrong: півтора години
• Right: півтори години (feminine for година)
• Why: Півтора is masculine/neuter; півтори is feminine.

Using багато with nominative

• Wrong: багато люди
• Right: багато людей (gen pl)
• Why: Indefinite quantifiers require genitive plural.

Usage Notes

Collective numerals (двоє, троє, etc.) are required with pluralia tantum nouns (двері, ножиці, штани) and are preferred for groups of people, especially children and mixed-gender groups. For specific professions or types, cardinal numbers are also acceptable.

The quantifier "декілька" (several) is one of the most common indefinite quantifiers and always takes genitive plural.
