Expressing Likes in Ukrainian

Overview

Expressing preferences is fundamental to personal conversation, and Ukrainian offers two main constructions for this at the CEFR A1 level. The verb "любити" (to love/like) works like an English transitive verb with a direct object, while "подобатися" (to appeal to, to be liked by) uses a dative construction where the thing liked is the subject and the person who likes it is in the dative case.

This dative construction is one of the first encounters A1 learners have with a sentence structure that reverses the English perspective. Understanding it early prevents confusion and opens the door to similar constructions that are common throughout Ukrainian.

Both constructions are widely used in everyday speech, but they carry slightly different nuances that are worth understanding from the start.

How It Works

Любити (to love / to like)

Standard transitive verb -- subject likes the object:

Подобатися (to appeal to / to be liked)

Common Mistakes

Using nominative instead of dative with подобатися

• Wrong: Я подобаюся Київ.
• Right: Мені подобається Київ.
• Why: With подобатися, the person goes in dative (мені), and the liked thing is the nominative subject.

Wrong verb agreement with подобатися

• Wrong: Мені подобається книги. (singular verb with plural subject)
• Right: Мені подобаються книги.
• Why: The verb agrees with the grammatical subject (the liked thing), not the dative experiencer.

Confusing любити and подобатися intensity

• Wrong: Using them as exact synonyms in all contexts.
• Right: Любити is stronger (love/really like); подобатися is milder (like/find appealing).
• Why: "Я люблю тебе" = I love you. "Ти мені подобаєшся" = I like you / I find you attractive.

Usage Notes

"Любити" is used for strong preferences, habits, and love. "Подобатися" is for milder liking or first impressions. In romantic contexts, "подобатися" often means "to find attractive" while "любити" means "to love."

The dative construction with подобатися is a pattern you will encounter with many other verbs and expressions: здаватися (to seem), вдаватися (to succeed), бракувати (to lack).

Practice Tips

1. Preference lists: Write lists of things you love (люблю) and things you like (подобається), practicing both constructions.

2. Agreement drills: Practice подобається (singular) vs подобаються (plural) with different subjects.

3. Conversation prompts: Ask and answer "Тобі подобається...?" with various topics.
