Days, Months, and Seasons in Ukrainian

Дні, Місяці і Пори Року

This article is part of the Ukrainian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Ukrainian writes days, months, and seasons with lowercase letters: понеділок, березень, літо. Use у/в + accusative for a particular weekday (у понеділок “on Monday”), у/в + locative for a month (у березні “in March”), and the special adverbs навесні, влітку, восени, взимку for “in spring/summer/autumn/winter.”

Overview

Days, months, and seasons are basic A1 vocabulary, but learning the dictionary forms alone is not enough. Ukrainian nouns change form according to their role in a phrase. This system is called case: a noun ending can change to show meanings that English often expresses through word order or a preposition. That is why “March” is березень, but “in March” is у березні.

You will use these words when arranging a meeting, describing a routine, booking travel, discussing weather, or giving a date. Three patterns cover most beginner needs: у/в + weekday, у/в + month, and a one-word seasonal expression such as влітку. The sections below first give those practical patterns, then explain dates, repeated events, and less obvious uses.

Unlike English, Ukrainian does not normally capitalize names of weekdays, months, or seasons. Write середа, жовтень, and зима, not Середа, Жовтень, and Зима, unless the word begins a sentence or belongs to an official title.

How It Works

Days of the week

The dictionary form is the nominative (the basic form used, among other things, to name what something is). Use it after сьогодні “today” when simply identifying the day: Сьогодні вівторок. Ukrainian normally has no spoken equivalent of “is” in this present-tense sentence.

To say that something happens on a particular weekday, use у or в plus the accusative (a noun form also commonly used for the direct object—the thing directly affected by an action).

English Dictionary form “on …”
Monday понеділок у понеділок
Tuesday вівторок у вівторок
Wednesday середа у середу
Thursday четвер у четвер
Friday п’ятниця у п’ятницю
Saturday субота у суботу
Sunday неділя у неділю

Masculine inanimate weekday names have no visible change here. Feminine nouns ending in -а change to -у, and those ending in -я change to -ю. This produces середу, п’ятницю, суботу, неділю.

Ukrainian у and в are variants of the same preposition. The choice often helps speech flow and avoids an awkward sequence of sounds. It does not change the time meaning: both у понеділок and в понеділок can mean “on Monday.” As a beginner, learn the common model phrases rather than trying to apply an absolute spelling rule.

Months of the year

To identify the current month, use the dictionary form: Зараз квітень. “It is April now.” To say “in” a month, use у/в + locative. The locative is a noun form commonly used after prepositions meaning “in,” “at,” or “on.”

English Dictionary form “in …”
January січень у січні
February лютий у лютому
March березень у березні
April квітень у квітні
May травень у травні
June червень у червні
July липень у липні
August серпень у серпні
September вересень у вересні
October жовтень у жовтні
November листопад у листопаді
December грудень у грудні

Most month names ending in -ень lose the second е and end in -ні: березень → у березні. Do not try to build every form by attaching a single ending; learn each month together with its time phrase. Лютий behaves like an adjective and becomes у лютому, while листопад becomes у листопаді.

Seasons

The four season names are nouns, but Ukrainian usually uses special adverbs for the meaning “in/during that season.” An adverb is a word that describes when, where, or how something happens and does not change for case.

English Season noun Usual time adverb
spring весна навесні
summer літо влітку / улітку
autumn, fall осінь восени
winter зима взимку / узимку

Use the noun when naming or describing the season: Весна тепла. “Spring is warm.” Use the adverb to locate an action in time: Навесні теплішає. “It gets warmer in spring.” The paired forms влітку/улітку and взимку/узимку have the same meaning; the initial sound is chosen for euphony, meaning smoother pronunciation.

Where на fits

English “on” does not map word for word onto Ukrainian на. For a named weekday, the standard beginner pattern is у/в: у четвер, not a literal translation built with на. However, на occurs in other calendar expressions:

  • на вихідних — at/on the weekend
  • на Різдво — at Christmas
  • на початку березня — at the beginning of March
  • плани на понеділок — plans for Monday

In the final example, на понеділок means “for Monday,” not simply “on Monday”: Зустріч перенесли на понеділок means “The meeting was moved to Monday.”

Giving a date

In dates, the month uses the genitive (a case often expressing “of”): перше вересня “the first of September,” двадцять четверте серпня “the twenty-fourth of August.” In writing, a numeral is common: 24 серпня 2026 року. The year after a full date also takes the genitive form року.

Compare the three jobs done by three forms:

Meaning Ukrainian Why
March is cold. Березень холодний. Month is being named: nominative
We travel in March. Ми подорожуємо у березні. Time within a month: locative
The fifth of March п’яте березня Month in a date: genitive

For a first practical answer to Яке сьогодні число? “What is today’s date?”, say Сьогодні п’яте березня.

Common Mistakes

Copying English capitalization

  • Wrong: У Березні починається весна.
  • Right: У березні починається весна.
  • Why: Ukrainian weekday, month, and season names are common nouns and normally begin with lowercase letters.

Leaving a feminine weekday unchanged

  • Wrong: у середа, у неділя
  • Right: у середу, у неділю
  • Why: A weekday after у/в has the accusative form. Feminine -а/-я changes to -у/-ю.

Using the dictionary form after “in”

  • Wrong: у березень, у грудень
  • Right: у березні, у грудні
  • Why: A month meaning “in [month]” follows у/в in the locative case.

Translating “in spring” word for word

  • Wrong: у весна
  • Right: навесні
  • Why: Ukrainian normally uses a dedicated seasonal adverb. Learn all four as complete units: навесні, влітку, восени, взимку.

Using на for every English “on”

  • Wrong: Я працюю на понеділок. when you mean “I work on Monday.”
  • Right: Я працюю у понеділок.
  • Why: English prepositions do not transfer directly. На понеділок usually points toward Monday as a deadline or scheduled target, as in “move it to Monday” or “plans for Monday.”

Confusing a month phrase with a date

  • Wrong: п’яте у березні for “the fifth of March”
  • Right: п’яте березня
  • Why: A calendar date uses the genitive month form without у/в.

Usage Notes

Asking useful calendar questions

Several common questions call for different kinds of answers:

Question Meaning Typical answer
Який сьогодні день? What day is it today? Сьогодні четвер.
Яке сьогодні число? What is today’s date? Сьогодні восьме квітня.
Коли зустріч? When is the meeting? У вівторок.
У якому місяці? In which month? У червні.
Яка зараз пора року? What season is it now? Зараз осінь.

День can mean either “day” generally or a weekday in context. Число literally has the broader meaning “number,” but in this question it asks for the day of the month.

Word order and commas

Time phrases can come first or later. У п’ятницю ми не працюємо and Ми не працюємо у п’ятницю are both natural. Putting the phrase first makes the time the frame or topic. A short opening time phrase does not automatically require a comma in Ukrainian, so У п’ятницю ми не працюємо is normally written without one.

British and American English labels

Ukrainian осінь corresponds to both British English “autumn” and American English “fall.” The Ukrainian form does not change according to which English term you prefer.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

You do not need to master these patterns at A1, but they explain forms you will meet later.

Habitual weekdays

A bare у понеділок often refers to one Monday, though context can make it habitual. To make repetition explicit, Ukrainian has several options:

  • щопонеділка — every Monday
  • щовівторка — every Tuesday
  • щосереди — every Wednesday
  • по понеділках — on Mondays
  • кожного понеділка — every Monday

The що- forms are written as one word. They contain forms that differ from the beginner accusative phrase, so learn them as units rather than trying to derive them from у понеділок.

Time within a season versus movement or a deadline

The adverb навесні simply answers “when?” By contrast, noun phrases can express a planned time or movement toward a seasonal deadline:

  • Навесні ми посадимо дерева. — We will plant trees in spring.
  • Ми плануємо подорож на весну. — We are planning the trip for spring.
  • До зими треба відремонтувати дах. — The roof must be repaired by winter.

This is why memorizing “spring = весна” is not enough: the intended relationship to time determines the form.

Dates in running speech

When a date answers “when?”, ordinal numbers often appear in the genitive: п’ятого травня, двадцять четвертого серпня. When stating what today’s date is, the neuter nominative form is usual: Сьогодні п’яте травня. The contrast becomes easier after you study Ukrainian ordinal numbers and the genitive case in more detail.

Names derived from nature and traditional life

Many Ukrainian month names evoke seasonal phenomena: квітень is associated with flowering, травень with grass, липень with the linden tree, and листопад with falling leaves. These associations can be useful memory aids, but modern month names are fixed calendar terms; do not treat their internal imagery as a grammar rule.

Practice Tips

  1. Learn each noun with its working phrase. Make cards in pairs: середа — у середу, березень — у березні, літо — влітку. This trains the form you actually need in conversation.
  2. Build a weekly and yearly calendar aloud. Say one real sentence for each weekday, then one plan for three different months: У четвер я…, У серпні ми…. Use your own routine so the phrases carry meaning.
  3. Sort examples by question. Put phrases under Який день?, Коли?, or Яке число? This helps separate понеділок, у понеділок, and date forms instead of memorizing endings without a purpose.
