Common Irregular Verbs in Ukrainian

Overview

Several of the most frequently used Ukrainian verbs have irregular present tense conjugations that do not follow the standard first or second conjugation patterns. At the CEFR A1 level, you will encounter these verbs constantly -- they express fundamental concepts like going, eating, giving, wanting, and being able to.

These verbs must be memorized individually because their forms cannot be predicted from the infinitive alone. The good news is that the set of truly irregular verbs is small, and once you learn them, you will have the tools for a large portion of everyday communication.

Many of these verbs also have irregular imperative and past tense forms, making them important to revisit at every stage of learning.

Common Mistakes

Regularizing irregular forms

  • Wrong: Я хотю. or Я хотію.
  • Right: Я хочу.
  • Why: Хотіти has an irregular stem change in present tense: хот- becomes хоч-.

Confusing іти and їхати

  • Wrong: Я іду до Львова. (when traveling by train)
  • Right: Я їду до Львова.
  • Why: Іти is for going on foot; їхати is for going by vehicle.

Wrong forms of їсти

  • Wrong: Я їсю.
  • Right: Я їм.
  • Why: Їсти has highly irregular present tense forms that must be memorized.

Usage Notes

These irregular verbs appear in countless everyday situations and fixed expressions. "Хотіти" and "могти" function as modal verbs followed by an infinitive: Хочу їсти (I want to eat), Можу допомогти (I can help).

Note that "дати" is perfective -- its present-tense forms actually express future meaning (I will give). The imperfective counterpart is "давати" (to give, to be giving), which is regular.

Practice Tips

  1. Conjugation cards: Create flashcards for each irregular verb with all six present-tense forms. Review daily until automatic.

  2. Mini-dialogues: Practice short exchanges using these verbs: "Куди ти йдеш?" -- "Іду до магазину."

  3. Irregular verb journal: Keep a running list of irregular forms you encounter in reading or listening, adding new ones as you progress.
