Colors and Shapes in Turkish

Renkler ve Şekiller

Overview

Colors and shapes are among the first vocabulary sets you learn in any language, and Turkish is no exception. Being able to describe the color of an object or its shape helps you in everyday situations like shopping, giving descriptions, and understanding signs. In Turkish, colors function as adjectives and follow the same simple rules as other adjectives — they come before the noun they describe.

At the A1 level, you will learn the basic color words and a few common shapes. The good news is that Turkish color words are straightforward, with no gender agreement or plural changes to worry about. A red car is kırmızı araba, and red cars are still kırmızı arabalar — the color word stays the same.

How It Works

Basic Colors

Turkish English
kırmızı red
mavi blue
yeşil green
sarı yellow
beyaz white
siyah black
turuncu orange
mor purple
pembe pink
kahverengi brown
gri gray

Using Colors as Adjectives

Colors go directly before the noun, with no connecting word:

Turkish English
kırmızı araba red car
mavi gökyüzü blue sky
beyaz kedi white cat
siyah çanta black bag
yeşil çay green tea

Asking About Colors

Turkish English
Bu ne renk? What color is this?
Hangi renk istiyorsun? Which color do you want?
Kırmızı mı mavi mi? Red or blue?

Shades and Modifications

Turkish English
açık mavi light blue
koyu yeşil dark green
açık light (shade)
koyu dark (shade)

Basic Shapes

Turkish English
daire circle
kare square
üçgen triangle
dikdörtgen rectangle
yıldız star
kalp heart

Colors as Nouns

Colors can also stand alone as nouns:

Turkish English
Kırmızı en sevdiğim renk. Red is my favorite color.
Mavisi var mı? Do you have it in blue?
Yeşili tercih ederim. I prefer the green one.

When used as nouns referring to a specific item, colors can take case suffixes: mavisi (its blue / the blue one), kırmızıyı (the red one — accusative).

Common Mistakes

Adding Plural Suffixes to Color Adjectives

  • Wrong: kırmızılar arabalar (reds cars)
  • Right: kırmızı arabalar (red cars)
  • Why: In Turkish, adjectives do not take plural suffixes. Only the noun becomes plural. The color word stays in its base form.

Confusing kahverengi with kahve

  • Wrong: Kahve çanta (meaning brown bag, but actually says "coffee bag")
  • Right: Kahverengi çanta (brown bag)
  • Why: Kahve means "coffee." The color brown is kahverengi (literally "coffee-colored"). Using just kahve before a noun implies the noun is related to coffee, not that it is brown.

Word Order with Shade Modifiers

  • Wrong: mavi açık (blue light — reversed)
  • Right: açık mavi (light blue)
  • Why: The shade modifier (açık/koyu) comes before the color, just as in English "light blue" — the modifier precedes what it modifies.

Practice Tips

  • Look around your room and name the color of every object you see in Turkish. Say the full phrase: beyaz duvar (white wall), siyah telefon (black phone), mavi yastık (blue pillow).
  • When shopping online or in stores, practice asking about colors: Başka renk var mı? (Do you have other colors?) and Mavisi var mı? (Do you have it in blue?)
