Negation (Hindi/Wala/Huwag) in Tagalog
Pagtanggi (Hindi/Wala/Huwag)
Overview
Tagalog uses three distinct negation words, each with its own grammatical role: hindi (negates adjectives, verbs, and identity), wala (negates existence and possession), and huwag (used for negative commands). Understanding which negator to use in which situation is a core A1 skill that you will rely on every day.
This three-way system might seem complex at first compared to English "not" and "don't," but each negator has a clear domain. Once you internalize when to use each one, the system actually feels logical and precise. Hindi is the most general, covering descriptions and actions. Wala handles "there is no" and "I don't have." Huwag is strictly for telling someone not to do something.
These negators combine powerfully with particles like na (already) and pa (still/yet) to express ideas like "not yet" (hindi pa) and "no longer" (hindi na). These combinations are extremely frequent in daily conversation.
How It Works
Hindi — negates descriptions, actions, and identity:
| Pattern | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Hindi + adjective | Hindi maganda. | Not beautiful. |
| Hindi + verb | Hindi siya kumain. | He/She did not eat. |
| Hindi + noun (identity) | Hindi ako Pilipino. | I am not Filipino. |
Wala — negates existence and possession:
| Pattern | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Wala + -ng + noun | Walang tao dito. | There is no one here. |
| Wala + pronoun + -ng + noun | Wala akong pera. | I don't have money. |
Huwag — negative commands:
| Pattern | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Huwag + ka/kayo + -ng + verb | Huwag kang umiyak. | Don't cry. |
| Huwag + verb | Huwag kumain dito. | Don't eat here. |
Combining with na and pa:
| Combination | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| hindi pa | not yet | Hindi pa ako kumakain. (I haven't eaten yet.) |
| hindi na | no longer | Hindi na siya nandito. (He/She is no longer here.) |
| wala pa | not yet (existence) | Wala pa siya. (He/She isn't here yet.) |
| wala na | no more | Wala na akong pera. (I have no more money.) |

Common Mistakes
Using Hindi for Possession
- Wrong: Hindi ako may pera. (awkward)
- Right: Wala akong pera. (I don't have money.)
- Why: Possession and existence are negated with wala, not hindi.
Using Hindi for Commands
- Wrong: Hindi ka kumain! (sounds like a statement)
- Right: Huwag kang kumain! (Don't eat!)
- Why: Negative commands require huwag, not hindi.
Forgetting -Ng with Wala
- Wrong: Wala tao dito.
- Right: Walang tao dito.
- Why: Wala connects to the following noun with the linker -ng (written as walang).
Mixing Up Hindi Pa and Hindi Na
- Wrong: Hindi na siya kumakain. (when meaning "not yet")
- Right: Hindi pa siya kumakain. (He/She hasn't eaten yet.)
- Why: Pa = still/yet (ongoing state), na = already (change of state). Hindi pa = not yet; hindi na = no longer.
Practice Tips
Three-column sorting: Write ten negative sentences in English, then decide which Tagalog negator each needs: hindi, wala, or huwag. Check your answers. This builds the habit of choosing the right negator.
Na/Pa combinations: Practice all four combinations (hindi pa, hindi na, wala pa, wala na) with simple sentences. These four expressions cover a huge range of everyday situations.
Polite refusals: Practice saying "no" politely in different situations: Hindi, salamat. (No, thank you.), Wala po. (There is none, respectful.), Huwag na lang. (Never mind / Don't bother.)
