Na/Pa Particles (Already/Still) in Tagalog

Mga Katagang Na/Pa

Overview

The aspectual particles na (already/now) and pa (still/yet/more) are two of the most frequently used words in Tagalog. This A2 topic builds on your basic adverb knowledge by exploring how na and pa interact with negation to create four essential combinations: na (already), pa (still), hindi pa (not yet), and hindi na (no longer).

These particles appear in almost every Tagalog conversation. The question Kumain ka na ba? (Have you eaten already?) is a national greeting. Understanding the subtle difference between na (change of state — something is now the case) and pa (continuation — something is still the case) will dramatically improve both your comprehension and your ability to express nuance.

Though they are small words, na and pa carry enormous meaning. Mastering their use with negation is the key to expressing temporal nuance without relying on tense markers.

How It Works

Na (already/now) — signals change of state:

Something that was not the case is now the case.

Kumain na ako. — I already ate. (Before I hadn't, now I have.) Gabi na. — It's nighttime already.

Pa (still/yet/more) — signals continuation:

Something continues to be the case.

Natutulog pa siya. — He/She is still sleeping. May oras pa. — There is still time.

Four key combinations with hindi:

Combination Meaning Example English
na already Kumain na ako. I already ate.
pa still Kumakain pa siya. He/She is still eating.
hindi pa not yet Hindi pa ako kumakain. I haven't eaten yet.
hindi na no longer Hindi na siya nandito. He/She is no longer here.

With wala:

Combination Meaning Example English
wala pa not yet (existence) Wala pa siya. He/She isn't here yet.
wala na no more Wala na akong pera. I have no more money.

Common Mistakes

Confusing Hindi Pa and Hindi Na

  • Wrong: Hindi na siya dumating. (when meaning "not yet")
  • Right: Hindi pa siya dumating. (He/She hasn't arrived yet.)
  • Why: Hindi pa = not yet (expected to happen). Hindi na = no longer (was true before, not anymore).

Placing Na/Pa in the Wrong Position

  • Wrong: Na kumain ako.
  • Right: Kumain na ako.
  • Why: Na and pa are enclitics — they follow the first content word or pronoun, not the beginning of the sentence.

Mixing Up Pa (still) and Pa (more)

  • Wrong: Thinking pa always means "still"
  • Right: Kumain ka pa. (Eat more.) vs. Kumakain pa siya. (He/She is still eating.)
  • Why: Pa has both meanings. With commands, it often means "more." With ongoing actions, it means "still." Context determines which.

Using Na and Pa Together Incorrectly

  • Wrong: Kumain na pa siya.
  • Right: Kumain na siya. (already ate) or Kumakain pa siya. (still eating)
  • Why: Na and pa express opposite states and are rarely combined. (Exception: na naman = again)

Practice Tips

  1. Status updates: Practice giving status updates using all four forms: Tapos na. (Done already.) / Hindi pa tapos. (Not yet done.) / Ginagawa pa. (Still working on it.) / Hindi na ginagawa. (No longer working on it.)

  2. Daily questions: Ask yourself throughout the day: Kumain ka na ba? Hindi pa. / Kumain na ako. This drills the most common usage.

  3. Na/Pa sorting: Write ten sentences and identify whether each uses na (change) or pa (continuation). This builds your intuition for the distinction.
