Using formal connectors in casual conversation

• Awkward: Samakatuwid, kain na tayo!
• Natural: Kaya kain na tayo!
• Why: Samakatuwid belongs in formal writing and speeches. In casual speech, use kaya (so/therefore) instead.

Confusing samantala (meanwhile) with habang (while)

• Wrong: Samantala nagluluto siya, nagbabasa ako. (in casual speech)
• Better (casual): Habang nagluluto siya, nagbabasa ako.
• Better (formal): Samantala, naghahanda rin ang iba pang miyembro.
• Why: Samantala is used in formal contexts to introduce a parallel or contrasting situation, often in a separate sentence. Habang is the everyday word for "while" within the same sentence.

Overloading sentences with multiple formal connectors

• Awkward: Gayunpaman, samakatuwid, kailangan pa rin nating kumilos.
• Better: Gayunpaman, kailangan pa rin nating kumilos.
• Why: Each connector carries strong logical weight. Using two in the same sentence creates contradictory signals (nevertheless + therefore).

Forgetting that ngunit and subalit are not interchangeable with pero in register

• Wrong (in formal essay): Pero hindi ito totoo.
• Right (formal): Ngunit hindi ito totoo. or Subalit hindi ito totoo.
• Why: Pero is the everyday form. Formal writing requires ngunit or subalit.
