Superlative Degree in Russian
Overview
The superlative degree expresses the highest degree of a quality -- "the biggest," "the most interesting," "the best." At the A2 level, superlatives allow you to express strong preferences, make recommendations, and describe extremes, which are natural parts of everyday conversation.
Russian has three ways to form superlatives: the compound form with самый + adjective (most common and versatile), the suffix form with -ейший/-айший (formal or literary), and the comparative + всего/всех construction (for "most of all"). The compound form with самый is by far the most practical for learners because it declines normally and works in all positions.
The самый construction is straightforward: самый agrees with the noun in gender, number, and case, and the adjective also agrees as usual. This makes it predictable once you know basic adjective agreement.
How It Works
Compound Superlative (Most Common)
Самый + adjective (both decline)
| Gender | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | самый большой | the biggest |
| Feminine | самая красивая | the most beautiful |
| Neuter | самое важное | the most important |
| Plural | самые лучшие | the best (pl) |
Suffix Superlative (Formal/Literary)
| Adjective | Superlative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| важный | важнейший | most important |
| крупный | крупнейший | largest |
| сильный | сильнейший | strongest |
| интересный | интереснейший | most interesting |
After г, к, х: use -айший: великий → величайший (greatest)
Comparative + всего/всех
- Всего (of everything): Больше всего мне нравится музыка. (Most of all I like music.)
- Всех (of everyone): Она лучше всех говорит. (She speaks best of all.)

Common Mistakes
Not declining самый with the noun
- Wrong: самый красивая девушка
- Right: самая красивая девушка
- Why: Самый must agree with the noun in gender, number, and case, just like any other adjective.
Using suffix superlatives in casual speech
- Wrong: Using важнейший in everyday conversation (sounds overly formal)
- Right: Use самый важный for casual contexts; reserve -ейший for formal writing
- Why: The suffix superlative belongs to formal, literary, or journalistic register.
Mixing compound and suffix forms
- Wrong: самый крупнейший
- Right: самый крупный or крупнейший
- Why: Do not combine самый with the suffix superlative. Use one form or the other.
Practice Tips
- Describe superlatives in your life: самый интересный фильм, самый вкусный ресторан, самый лучший друг.
- Practice declining самый through cases with a noun: самый большой дом, самого большого дома, самому большому дому...
