Second Conjugation Verbs in Russian

Overview

Second conjugation verbs form the smaller but important group of Russian verbs, primarily consisting of verbs with infinitives ending in -ить. At the A1 level, this conjugation pattern covers essential everyday verbs like говорить (to speak), любить (to love), видеть (to see), and смотреть (to watch).

Second conjugation is distinguished from first conjugation by its characteristic vowel -и- in most endings and -ят/-ат in the third person plural (compared to -ют/-ут for first conjugation). Some second conjugation verbs also undergo consonant changes in the first person singular, which can surprise learners.

While first conjugation is the larger, "default" group, second conjugation includes many of the most frequently used verbs in Russian. Recognizing which pattern a verb follows -- and handling the occasional stem change -- is a key skill for A1 communication.

Formation

1. Take the infinitive: говорить (to speak)
2. Remove -ить: говор-

Consonant Mutations (First Person Singular Only)

Some verbs change their final stem consonant in the я form:

Common Mistakes

Forgetting consonant mutations

• Wrong: Я любю, Я видю
• Right: Я люблю, Я вижу
• Why: Certain consonants mutate in the first person singular only. This must be memorized for each verb.

Using first conjugation endings on second conjugation verbs

• Wrong: Он говорет, они говорют
• Right: Он говорит, они говорят
• Why: Second conjugation uses -ит (not -ет) and -ят (not -ют).

Assuming all -ить verbs are second conjugation

• Wrong: Conjugating пить (to drink) as second conjugation
• Right: Пить is irregular: пью, пьёшь, пьёт
• Why: A few -ить verbs are exceptions. Check each verb individually.

Practice Tips

• Focus on the consonant mutation pattern by drilling the я form alongside the ты form: люблю/любишь, вижу/видишь, ношу/носишь.
• Compare pairs of first and second conjugation verbs side by side to sharpen the distinction: читаю/читаешь (1st) vs. говорю/говоришь (2nd).
