Future Tense in Russian

Overview

Russian has two ways to express the future, and the choice depends on verbal aspect. The compound future uses быть (conjugated) + imperfective infinitive for ongoing or repeated future actions, while the simple future uses a perfective verb conjugated in present-tense-like forms for completed future actions. At the A2 level, understanding this split is essential for talking about plans, predictions, and intentions.

The compound future (буду читать = I will be reading) emphasizes the process or duration of the action. The simple future (прочитаю = I will read/finish reading) emphasizes the completion or result. This is not just a grammatical distinction -- it reflects a fundamental way Russian speakers conceptualize future events.

The future tense of быть itself (буду, будешь, будет, будем, будете, будут) is one of the most important paradigms to memorize, since it appears both as the future of "to be" and as the auxiliary in the compound future.

Simple Future (Perfective)

Perfective verbs conjugated like present tense but with future meaning:

Common Mistakes

Using compound future with perfective verbs

• Wrong: Я буду прочитать.
• Right: Я прочитаю. or Я буду читать.
• Why: Быть + infinitive only works with imperfective verbs. Perfective verbs form their own future by conjugation.

Confusing perfective "present" forms with actual present tense

• Wrong: Thinking прочитаю means "I am reading"
• Right: Прочитаю means "I will read/finish reading" -- perfective verbs have no present tense
• Why: When a perfective verb is conjugated with present-tense endings, the meaning is always future.

Using present tense for future events

• Wrong: Завтра я читаю книгу. (present for future, generally not idiomatic for imperfective)
• Right: Завтра я буду читать книгу. or Завтра я прочитаю книгу.
• Why: Unlike English, Russian generally does not use present tense for future plans (with some exceptions for transport schedules).

Practice Tips

• Practice describing tomorrow's plan using both futures: Завтра я буду работать (process) и напишу отчёт (result).
• Conjugate быть (future) until automatic: буду, будешь, будет, будем, будете, будут.
