Textual Connectors in Romanian

Conectorii Textuali

Overview

Textual connectors are linking words and phrases that create coherence and logical flow between sentences and paragraphs. They signal to the reader or listener how ideas relate to each other: whether the next point adds information, contrasts with what came before, provides a consequence, or introduces a conclusion. In Romanian, a rich set of connectors exists for each of these functions.

At the B1 level, textual connectors are essential for moving beyond short, isolated sentences into structured discourse. Whether writing an essay, giving a presentation, or simply telling a story, these connectors are what make the difference between a list of facts and a coherent argument.

Romanian textual connectors often consist of multi-word phrases built from prepositions, demonstratives, and nouns, reflecting the language's preference for analytical constructions. Many have direct equivalents in other Romance languages, making them relatively transparent for learners with French, Italian, or Spanish background.

Common Mistakes

Wrong: De o alta parte, avem avantaje. Right: Pe de alta parte, avem avantaje. Why: This is a fixed expression. The correct form is pe de alta parte, not variations with de o alta parte or din alta parte.

Wrong: In primul, trebuie sa invatam. Right: In primul rand, trebuie sa invatam. Why: The sequencing connector requires the full phrase in primul rand (literally "in the first row/rank"). Omitting rand is incomplete.

Wrong: Cu totul acestea, e dificil. Right: Cu toate acestea, e dificil. Why: The concessive connector is cu toate acestea (with all these), not cu totul acestea. Cu totul means "entirely/completely" and is a different expression.

Wrong: Prin urma, am decis... Right: Prin urmare, am decis... Why: The consequence connector is prin urmare (consequently), not prin urma (which does not exist as a standard connector).

Wrong: In concluzie ca proiectul a fost un succes. Right: In concluzie, proiectul a fost un succes. Why: Textual connectors are typically followed by a comma and a complete main clause. They do not introduce subordinate clauses with ca.

Usage Notes

Textual connectors are more prevalent in formal and written Romanian than in casual speech. In everyday conversation, Romanians tend to use simpler connectors like si (and), dar (but), deci (so), and apoi (then). The more elaborate connectors listed here become important at B1 and above, particularly for academic writing, presentations, and formal correspondence.

Using connectors appropriately is a strong indicator of language proficiency. Overusing them, however, can make text feel stilted. A good rule is to use them at transition points between ideas, not at the start of every sentence.

Most of these connectors are standard across all dialects and registers. Some, like asadar and prin urmare, are distinctly formal and would sound out of place in a casual conversation.

For A1-A2 learners, basic connectors (si, dar, apoi, deci) suffice. At B1, the expanded set becomes necessary for structured communication. B2+ learners should command the full range and use them flexibly.

Practice Tips

  • When writing a short essay or email in Romanian, consciously use at least one connector from each category (adding, contrasting, sequencing, concluding). This forces you to vary your toolkit.
  • Read Romanian opinion articles or editorials and highlight every textual connector. Note which ones appear most frequently and in which positions (sentence-initial, mid-sentence, or parenthetical).
  • Practice replacing one connector with another of the same category to develop flexibility. For example, swap cu toate acestea for totusi or in primul rand for mai intai to see how register shifts.
