Verb-Preposition Collocations in Polish
Rekcja Czasownikowa
Overview
Many Polish verbs require specific prepositions followed by specific cases. These verb-preposition-case combinations (called rekcja in Polish linguistics) must be learned as fixed units because they often do not match English patterns. At the B2 level, knowing the correct preposition and case for common verbs is essential for natural-sounding Polish.
For example, myśleć o + locative (think about), czekać na + accusative (wait for), zależeć od + genitive (depend on). English "think about" and "wait for" have no case component, so the Polish system requires additional learning. Getting the preposition or case wrong is one of the most common errors at intermediate level.

Common Mistakes
Using wrong preposition based on English
- Wrong: Myślę na tobie. (thinking English "about" = Polish na)
- Right: Myślę o tobie.
- Why: Polish o + locative = think about. The English preposition does not map directly.
Wrong case after correct preposition
- Wrong: Czekam na ciebie. is correct, but Czekam na ty is wrong.
- Right: Czekam na ciebie. (accusative of ty)
- Why: Even with the right preposition, the case must be correct.
Confusing cieszyć się z and cieszyć się na
- Wrong: Cieszę się z wakacje.
- Right: Cieszę się z wakacji. (happy about past/present) or Cieszę się na wakacje. (looking forward to future)
- Why: Z + genitive = happy about something that happened. Na + accusative = looking forward to something future.
Usage Notes
Verb-preposition collocations are fixed in all registers. There is no simplified or colloquial alternative. Dictionaries typically list the required preposition and case alongside the verb entry.
Practice Tips
- Create a personal reference list of verb + preposition + case combinations. Add new ones as you encounter them.
- Practice each collocation in a full sentence: Myślę o pracy. Czekam na autobus. Boję się egzaminu.
- Group verbs by the preposition they take: all o + loc verbs, all na + acc verbs, etc.
