Question Formation in Polish
Tworzenie Pytań
Overview
Polish offers two main ways to form questions: yes/no questions using the particle czy or rising intonation, and information questions using question words like co (what), kto (who), gdzie (where), kiedy (when), jak (how), and dlaczego (why). At the A1 level, mastering both types is essential for basic conversation.
Unlike English, Polish does not use auxiliary verbs ("do/does") to form questions. The word order typically remains the same as in a statement, with czy added at the beginning for yes/no questions. This makes Polish question formation simpler in some ways, though question words themselves decline for case, which adds complexity.
The question words kto (who) and co (what) change form depending on their grammatical role in the sentence, following the case system just like nouns.
How It Works
Yes/no questions
- With czy: Czy mówisz po polsku? (Do you speak Polish?)
- With intonation only: Mówisz po polsku? (You speak Polish? ↑)

Common Mistakes
Using English-style do/does
- Wrong: Czy robisz mówisz po polsku?
- Right: Czy mówisz po polsku?
- Why: Polish does not use auxiliary verbs in questions. Czy replaces the entire "do you" structure.
Forgetting to decline kto/co
- Wrong: Z kto rozmawiasz?
- Right: Z kim rozmawiasz?
- Why: After the preposition z, the instrumental form kim is required.
Using czemu in formal contexts
- Wrong: Czemu pan tak myśli? (in a formal letter)
- Right: Dlaczego pan tak myśli?
- Why: Czemu is colloquial; dlaczego is the standard/formal form.
Usage Notes
Czy is standard in both spoken and written Polish. In casual conversation, it is often dropped in favor of intonation alone. In formal contexts (interviews, official communication), czy is preferred. The colloquial czemu (why) is common in speech but should be avoided in formal writing, where dlaczego is standard.
Practice Tips
- Take ten statements and convert them to yes/no questions using czy. Then practice asking them with intonation only.
- Create a set of flashcards with question words and practice forming questions about your daily routine: Gdzie pracujesz? Kiedy wstajesz? Co jesz na śniadanie?
- Practice the case forms of kto and co by using them with different prepositions: z kim, o czym, do kogo, dla kogo.
