Possessive Pronouns in Polish

Zaimki Dzierżawcze

Overview

Possessive pronouns in Polish indicate ownership and, like adjectives, agree with the noun they modify in gender, number, and case. At the A1 level, learning the nominative forms is the priority: mój/moja/moje (my), twój/twoja/twoje (your), jego (his), jej (her), nasz/nasza/nasze (our), wasz/wasza/wasze (your pl.), and ich (their).

A distinctive feature of Polish possessives is that third-person forms (jego, jej, ich) do not decline -- they remain the same regardless of the gender, number, or case of the noun they modify. First and second person possessives, however, decline fully like adjectives, changing form to match the noun in all three dimensions.

This split between declining and non-declining possessives is a key pattern to learn early, as it simplifies a portion of the system considerably.

Common Mistakes

Declining third-person possessives

  • Wrong: jega dom or w jegom domu
  • Right: jego dom, w jego domu
  • Why: Jego, jej, ich never change form. They are invariable.

Wrong gender agreement

  • Wrong: mój książka
  • Right: moja książka
  • Why: Książka is feminine, so the possessive must be in the feminine form moja.

Confusing swój with mój/twój

  • Wrong: Ja widzę mój dom. (when you mean your own house)
  • Right: Both are acceptable at A1, but Widzę swój dom is more natural when the possessor is the subject.
  • Why: Polish has a reflexive possessive swój that refers back to the subject. This is an intermediate topic but worth knowing about.

Usage Notes

Possessive pronouns are used in all registers without variation. In casual speech, possessives are sometimes omitted when context makes ownership clear: Gdzie masz telefon? (Where's your phone?) rather than Gdzie masz twój telefon?

Practice Tips

  1. Practice describing items around you using possessives in all three genders: mój komputer, moja torba, moje biurko.
  2. For third-person forms, create sentences with jego, jej, ich and verify you are not adding any endings.
  3. Gradually practice possessives in cases other than nominative, starting with accusative and locative.
