Nominalization in Polish

Nominalizacja

This article is part of the Polish grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Polish can present an action as a thing or process by using a verbal noun, usually ending in -nie or -cie: budować → budowanie (“to build → building”) and przyjąć → przyjęcie (“to accept → acceptance”). The verb’s object normally becomes a genitive complement, while aspect preserves the contrast between an ongoing process and a completed event: pisanie listu versus napisanie listu.

Overview

Nominalization means turning an action, event, quality, or whole clause into a noun phrase. A noun phrase is a group built around a noun, such as “the introduction of new rules.” Polish does this especially productively with verbal nouns (rzeczowniki odczasownikowe), which are nouns derived from verbs: wprowadzić nowe zasady (“introduce new rules”) becomes wprowadzenie nowych zasad (“the introduction of new rules”).

You will meet such forms well before C1—common words such as jedzenie (“food; eating”), spotkanie (“meeting”), and pytanie (“question”) are everywhere. At C1, however, the important skill is using nominalization deliberately: condensing information, controlling formal style, and choosing between a process noun and a finite clause (a clause with a verb marked for tense and person).

English also uses action nouns and -ing forms, but the match is not one-to-one. English “writing” may be an activity, a body of written work, or part of a progressive verb. Polish pisanie is grammatically a neuter noun. It declines for case (its ending changes according to its role in the sentence), takes adjectives such as regularne, and can govern its own noun complement: regularne pisanie raportów.

How It Works

Forming verbal nouns

The most productive endings are -nie and -cie. They are closely related to the verb’s participial stem, so it is safer to learn the noun with the verb than to remove the infinitive ending mechanically. Stem and spelling changes are common.

Verb Verbal noun Basic meaning
pisać pisanie writing
czytać czytanie reading
budować budowanie building, construction
zrobić zrobienie doing, completion of doing
przyjąć przyjęcie acceptance, receiving
zamknąć zamknięcie closing, closure
rozpocząć rozpoczęcie beginning, commencement
odkryć odkrycie discovery, act of discovering

These nouns are grammatically neuter: długie oczekiwanie, ważne odkrycie. Most activity nouns are used mainly in the singular, but plural forms are possible when referring to separate events, sessions, products, or established lexical meanings: szkolenia pracowników (“employee training sessions”), odkrycia naukowe (“scientific discoveries”).

Declension

Verbal nouns decline like other neuter nouns in -e. The following forms are especially useful in formal prose.

Case and plain-English role pisanie przyjęcie Example
Nominative: subject/name pisanie przyjęcie Pisanie wymaga czasu.
Genitive: “of,” after some prepositions pisania przyjęcia bez pisania, do przyjęcia
Dative: “to/for” pisaniu przyjęciu sprzyja pisaniu
Accusative: direct object pisanie przyjęcie rozpocząć pisanie
Instrumental: “with/by means of” pisaniem przyjęciem zajmować się pisaniem
Locative: after o, po, przy pisaniu przyjęciu po przyjęciu propozycji

What happens to the participants in the action?

When a clause becomes a noun phrase, its participants must be expressed as noun dependents rather than as the grammatical subject and object of a finite verb.

Polish English Note
Komisja wprowadziła nowe zasady. The committee introduced new rules. Clause: komisja is the subject; zasady is the direct object.
wprowadzenie nowych zasad przez komisję the introduction of new rules by the committee The former object is genitive; the agent follows przez + accusative.
Dyrektor podpisał umowę. The director signed the contract. Finite clause.
podpisanie umowy przez dyrektora the signing of the contract by the director Both participants remain explicit.

The former direct object usually appears in the genitive (often corresponding to English “of”):

  • pisać listpisanie listu
  • przyjąć propozycjęprzyjęcie propozycji
  • analizować daneanalizowanie danych
  • wprowadzić nowe zasadywprowadzenie nowych zasad

The performer of the action—the agent—can be added with przez + accusative: zatwierdzenie projektu przez zarząd (“approval of the project by the board”). A possessive adjective or genitive noun may also identify someone associated with the action: decyzja ministra, jego przyjazd. These alternatives are not always exact equivalents; przez most clearly marks the doer of the nominalized action.

Complements required by other verbs generally retain their preposition or case: pomagać studentompomaganie studentom (dative), rozmawiać o problemierozmawianie o problemie, korzystać z danychkorzystanie z danych.

Aspect still matters

Polish aspect presents an action either as ongoing/repeated/incomplete (imperfective) or as a bounded, completed whole (perfective). Verbal nouns often preserve this distinction.

Imperfective process Perfective event/result Contrast
pisanie raportu napisanie raportu writing the report vs completing it
przyjmowanie zgłoszeń przyjęcie zgłoszeń receiving applications as a process vs accepting/receiving them as a completed event
wprowadzanie zasad wprowadzenie zasad implementation in progress/repeatedly vs introduction as a bounded event
zamykanie drogi zamknięcie drogi the process/repeated act of closing vs a closure

Aspect is often more informative than English “writing” or “introduction” alone. Choose the imperfective noun when duration, repetition, or procedure matters; choose the perfective noun when completion, result, or a single bounded change matters.

Building a sentence around the noun phrase

A nominalized phrase behaves as a noun and can follow prepositions, carry an adjective, or serve as a subject or object:

  • Po zakończeniu budowy otwarto most. — “After construction was completed, the bridge was opened.”
  • Regularne sprawdzanie danych zmniejsza ryzyko błędu. — “Regular checking of the data reduces the risk of error.”
  • Celem projektu jest usprawnienie komunikacji. — “The project’s aim is to improve communication.”
  • Nie przewidujemy wprowadzenia dodatkowych opłat. — “We do not anticipate the introduction of additional fees.”

Notice that the case of the verbal noun is determined by its role in the larger sentence. In po zakończeniu, po meaning “after” requires the locative. In nie przewidujemy wprowadzenia, negation and the government of the verb favor the genitive.

Examples in Context

Polish English Note
Pisanie listu zajęło jej godzinę. Writing the letter took her an hour. listu is the former object in the genitive.
Przyjęcie propozycji wymaga zgody całego zespołu. Acceptance of the proposal requires the whole team’s consent. Perfective: acceptance as a bounded decision.
Wprowadzenie nowych zasad zaplanowano na styczeń. The introduction of the new rules was scheduled for January. Formal, impersonal style.
Po zakończeniu budowy mieszkańcy odzyskali dostęp do drogi. After construction was completed, residents regained access to the road. po + locative: zakończeniu.
Regularne czytanie polskiej prasy poszerza słownictwo. Regular reading of the Polish press expands your vocabulary. An ongoing habit.
Napisanie raportu przed piątkiem może być trudne. Completing the report before Friday may be difficult. Perfective napisanie stresses completion.
Firma odpowiada za przetwarzanie danych osobowych. The company is responsible for processing personal data. za + accusative; common administrative wording.
Podpisanie umowy przez obie strony zakończy negocjacje. The signing of the contract by both parties will conclude the negotiations. The agent is marked by przez.
Odrzucenie wniosku nie wymaga dodatkowego uzasadnienia. Rejection of the application does not require additional justification. Dense formal noun phrase.
Dziękujemy za przesłanie dokumentów. Thank you for sending the documents. Conventional polite formula.
Przed podjęciem decyzji przeanalizowano wszystkie dane. Before making the decision, all the data was analyzed. przed + instrumental: podjęciem.
Ciągłe odkładanie spotkania utrudnia pracę zespołu. Constantly postponing the meeting makes the team’s work harder. Repeated imperfective activity.

Common Mistakes

Leaving the former object in the accusative

  • Wrong: pisanie list
  • Right: pisanie listu
  • Why: The direct object of pisać list normally becomes a genitive complement after the verbal noun.

Ignoring aspect

  • Wrong for intended completion: Pisanie raportu do piątku jest konieczne.
  • Better: Napisanie raportu do piątku jest konieczne.
  • Why: If the deadline concerns a finished report, perfective napisanie is more precise. Pisanie focuses on the activity and may leave completion open.

Treating the verbal noun as an infinitive

  • Wrong: Po zakończenie projektu...
  • Right: Po zakończeniu projektu...
  • Why: Zakończenie is a noun and must take the case required by the preposition. Temporal po takes the locative here.

Using a nominative agent after the noun

  • Wrong: zatwierdzenie projektu zarząd
  • Right: zatwierdzenie projektu przez zarząd
  • Why: The former subject cannot simply remain in the nominative. Use przez + accusative when you need to identify the agent unambiguously.

Translating every English -ing form with -nie/-cie

  • Wrong: Ona jest czytanie książki.
  • Right: Ona czyta książkę.
  • Why: Polish does not build its ordinary present tense with “be + verbal noun.” English “She is reading” is expressed by the finite verb czyta.

Packing too many nominalizations into one sentence

  • Heavy: Przeprowadzenie oceny możliwości wdrożenia rozwiązania wymaga dokonania analizy kosztów.
  • Clearer: Aby ocenić, czy można wdrożyć rozwiązanie, trzeba przeanalizować koszty.
  • Why: The original is grammatical, but repeated action nouns hide who does what. A clause with verbs is often clearer.

Usage Notes

Nominalization is especially frequent in academic, legal, administrative, technical, and business Polish. It allows writers to discuss procedures without naming an agent: Wnioski należy składać do 30 czerwca can be recast as Składanie wniosków jest możliwe do 30 czerwca. Official notices also favor phrases such as w celu uzyskania informacji, po otrzymaniu dokumentów, and warunki korzystania z usługi.

In everyday speech, shorter clauses are often more natural. Instead of Po dokonaniu zakupu prosimy o zachowanie paragonu, a speaker may simply say Po zakupie proszę zachować paragon or Kiedy coś kupisz, zachowaj paragon. Nominalization is not automatically “better Polish”; it is a tool for packaging information and adjusting register.

Some verbal nouns have developed ordinary lexical meanings. Jedzenie can mean the activity “eating” or “food”; spotkanie is normally “a meeting”; mieszkanie means “an apartment” as well as being historically related to mieszkać. Context and established usage matter more than a mechanical derivation.

Polish also has nonverbal abstract nouns that may sound more idiomatic than a productive verbal noun: analiza beside analizowanie, decyzja beside decydowanie, and zgoda beside zgodzenie się. The alternatives can differ in meaning. Analizowanie danych highlights the process, while analiza danych can denote either the process or the resulting analysis. Check common collocations rather than assuming the forms are interchangeable.

Beyond the Basics: Information Structure and Style

Nominalization changes what a sentence is “about.” A clause naturally foregrounds participants and time: Rząd zmienił przepisy w maju (“The government changed the regulations in May”). The noun phrase majowa zmiana przepisów przez rząd foregrounds the change itself and can be inserted into a larger argument: Majowa zmiana przepisów przez rząd wywołała protesty. This is useful for connecting ideas across sentences, because an event just described can become the subject of the next sentence.

It can also suppress information. Podjęto decyzję o zamknięciu oddziału does not say who decided. Such agentless style may be appropriate when the institution or procedure matters more than the individual, but it may also obscure responsibility. Critical readers should ask whether a nominalization hides an important doer.

A verbal noun can take modifiers that would otherwise require adverbs or subordinate clauses:

  • szybko wdrożono systemszybkie wdrożenie systemu
  • ponieważ odrzucono wniosekz powodu odrzucenia wniosku
  • kiedy zakończono kontrolępo zakończeniu kontroli
  • aby poprawić wynikiw celu poprawienia wyników / more idiomatically, w celu poprawy wyników

The last pair shows an important stylistic choice: the most regular verbal noun is not always the best collocation. Formal Polish strongly prefers some established abstract nouns, such as w celu poprawy (“in order to improve”), over heavier alternatives.

Reflexive verbs normally retain się: uczyć sięuczenie się, przygotować sięprzygotowanie się, sprzeciwić się decyzjisprzeciwienie się decyzji. The position of się can vary with the phrase, but it is not simply discarded. Case government is retained as well: sprzeciwić się decyzji and sprzeciwienie się decyzji both take the dative decyzji.

Finally, not every theoretically possible derivative is equally natural. Dictionaries and corpus examples are valuable at C1 because productivity has lexical limits: speakers favor conventional forms and combinations. Learn chunks such as podjęcie decyzji, złożenie wniosku, przeprowadzenie badania, and świadczenie usług, not just isolated endings.

Practice Tips

  1. Transform both ways. Take a short clause such as Zespół przeanalizował wyniki and produce przeanalizowanie wyników przez zespół. Then turn a dense official noun phrase back into a clear clause. This trains both recognition and style.
  2. Build aspect pairs. Record pairs such as pisanie/napisanie, wprowadzanie/wprowadzenie, and rozpatrywanie/rozpatrzenie. Add one sentence that makes the process/result contrast unmistakable.
  3. Collect complete collocations. From news, contracts, or academic texts, save the whole phrase with its required cases: po zakończeniu prac, przed podpisaniem umowy, w celu ochrony danych. Highlight the verbal noun ending and the genitive complement separately.
