Impersonal Constructions in Polish

Overview

Impersonal constructions express necessity, possibility, worth, and physical/emotional states without a personal subject. At the B1 level, key expressions include trzeba (it is necessary), można (one can), warto (it is worth), wolno (it is permitted), and nie wolno (it is forbidden). These are followed by infinitives and are extremely common in everyday Polish.

These constructions often use the dative case for the experiencer: Trzeba mi odpocząć (I need to rest, literally "it is necessary to-me to rest"). Weather and state expressions also fall into this category: Pada deszcz (It's raining), Jest zimno (It's cold).

Impersonal constructions are preferred in Polish where English might use "you" as a generic subject or passive voice. They are concise and natural-sounding.

Common Mistakes

Using personal construction for states

  • Wrong: Jestem zimny. (I am cold.)
  • Right: Jest mi zimno.
  • Why: Physical states use impersonal construction with dative, not adjective agreement with być.

Adding a subject to trzeba/można

  • Wrong: Ja trzeba iść.
  • Right: Trzeba iść. or Muszę iść.
  • Why: Trzeba is impersonal and takes no subject. Use musieć if you need a personal subject.

Confusing wolno and można

  • Wrong: Using them interchangeably.
  • Right: Można = it is possible/one can. Wolno = it is permitted.
  • Why: Można tu parkować (parking is possible here) vs. Wolno tu parkować (parking is permitted here).

Usage Notes

Impersonal constructions are standard in all registers. Trzeba and można are among the most frequently used words in Polish. In formal writing, należy (one should) often replaces trzeba. These constructions are preferred over passive voice in many contexts.

Practice Tips

  1. Describe rules and prohibitions: W muzeum nie wolno fotografować. Można tu parkować. Trzeba kupić bilet.
  2. Practice state expressions with different dative pronouns: Jest mi/ci/mu/jej/nam zimno/gorąco/smutno.
  3. Describe weather: Pada deszcz. Świeci słońce. Wieje wiatr. Jest ciepło.
