Conjugation I (-ę, -esz) in Polish
Koniugacja I
Overview
Conjugation I is one of the four main verb conjugation patterns in Polish. Verbs in this group take the endings -ę, -esz, -e, -emy, -ecie, -ą in the present tense. This is the largest conjugation class and includes many everyday verbs such as pisać (write), czytać (read), mieszkać (live), and pracować (work).
At the A1 level, learning Conjugation I gives you access to a huge number of common verbs. The pattern is highly regular, so once you know the endings you can conjugate dozens of verbs correctly. The main challenge is that many verbs undergo a stem change between the infinitive and the conjugated forms -- for example, pisać becomes piszę (not pisaę).
Understanding this conjugation pattern is the gateway to expressing actions, habits, and states in the present tense, which forms the bulk of beginner communication.

Common Mistakes
Forgetting the stem change
- Wrong: Pisaę list.
- Right: Piszę list.
- Why: The infinitive stem pisa- changes to pisz- in conjugation. Always check the first person singular form.
Confusing -ować verbs
- Wrong: Pracowę w biurze.
- Right: Pracuję w biurze.
- Why: Verbs in -ować always change to -uj- before the personal endings.
Mixing up conjugation classes
- Wrong: Czytam książkę. (using Conj. IV endings)
- Right: Czytam is actually correct -- czytać happens to follow Conj. IV (-am, -asz). Check the first person form to determine the class.
- Why: The infinitive ending alone does not tell you the conjugation class. Always learn the 1st person singular form.
Usage Notes
Conjugation I verbs are used identically across all registers. There is no simplified or colloquial variant of the endings. The stem changes are consistent and apply in all contexts.
Practice Tips
- For every new verb, learn the infinitive and the first person singular together: pisać (piszę), czytać (czytam), pracować (pracuję). The 1st person form reveals the conjugation class and any stem changes.
- Group -ować verbs together and practice them as a set -- they all follow the same -uj- pattern.
- Conjugate three new verbs per day through all six forms. Write them out by hand to reinforce the endings.
