Adverb Comparison in Polish

Stopniowanie Przysłówków

Overview

Polish adverbs, like adjectives, have comparative and superlative forms. At the B1 level, knowing how to compare actions (not just qualities) is essential for expressing preferences, making evaluations, and describing changes. The comparative is formed with the suffix -ej (sometimes -iej), and the superlative adds the prefix naj-.

Several common adverbs have irregular comparative forms that must be memorized: dobrze → lepiej → najlepiej (well → better → best), źle → gorzej → najgorzej (badly → worse → worst). The progressive form coraz + comparative (more and more) is very common in Polish.

How It Works

Regular comparison

Positive Comparative Superlative
szybko (quickly) szybciej najszybciej
wolno (slowly) wolniej najwolniej
cicho (quietly) ciszej najciszej
głośno (loudly) głośniej najgłośniej

Irregular comparison

Positive Comparative Superlative
dobrze (well) lepiej najlepiej
źle (badly) gorzej najgorzej
dużo (much) więcej najwięcej
mało (little) mniej najmniej
blisko (near) bliżej najbliżej
daleko (far) dalej najdalej

Progressive: coraz + comparative

coraz więcej (more and more), coraz lepiej (better and better)

Examples in Context

Polish English Note
szybko → szybciej → najszybciej quickly → more quickly → most quickly Regular
Mówi lepiej niż ja. He/She speaks better than me. Irregular
Najgorzej wypadł on. He ended up the worst. Superlative
coraz więcej more and more Progressive
Idź szybciej! Go faster! Comparative command
Mów głośniej. Speak louder. Comparative command
Ona tańczy najpiękniej. She dances most beautifully. Superlative
Coraz lepiej mówię po polsku. I speak Polish better and better. Progressive
Dalej od centrum. Further from the center. Comparative
Jak najszybciej. As quickly as possible. Emphatic superlative

Common Mistakes

Using adjective comparative instead of adverb

  • Wrong: Mówi lepszy niż ja.
  • Right: Mówi lepiej niż ja.
  • Why: Lepszy is an adjective (better); lepiej is an adverb (better -- modifying a verb).

Regularizing irregular forms

  • Wrong: dobrzej (from dobrze)
  • Right: lepiej
  • Why: Dobrze → lepiej is suppletive and must be memorized.

Usage Notes

Adverb comparison works identically in all registers. The coraz + comparative construction is extremely common in everyday Polish for describing trends and changes. Jak + superlative creates emphatic expressions: jak najszybciej (as fast as possible).

Practice Tips

  1. Memorize the irregular forms: lepiej, gorzej, więcej, mniej, bliżej, dalej.
  2. Practice coraz + comparative in descriptions of progress: Coraz lepiej rozumiem. Coraz szybciej czytam.
  3. Compare activities using adverbs: Ona mówi szybciej. On pisze ładniej. Ja czytam wolniej.
