Willen (to want) in Dutch

The modal verb willen (to want) is one of the most useful verbs in daily Dutch. You need it to express desires, make requests, order food and drinks, and talk about plans. It is the go-to verb whenever you want something — from a cup of coffee to a new job.

Like the other Dutch modal verbs, willen pairs with an infinitive that goes to the end of the clause. It can also take a direct object without an infinitive: Ik wil koffie (I want coffee). The conjugation is mostly regular in the singular, with all singular forms using wil (though wilt exists as a variant for jij and u).

In polite contexts, Dutch speakers often soften willen by using the past tense form wilde or the conditional zou willen — but at the A1 level, the present tense will serve you well in most situations.

Note: Wil is increasingly used for all singular persons in everyday speech. Wilt is more formal.

1. Restaurant ordering. Practice ordering with Ik wil graag...: Ik wil graag een biertje. Ik wil graag de soep van de dag. Ik wil graag betalen. The pattern wil graag + noun is one of the most useful phrases in Dutch.

2. Desire vs. no desire. Practice both positive and negative: Ik wil zwemmen. Ik wil niet zwemmen. Zij wil koffie. Zij wil geen koffie. This drills both niet and geen with willen.

3. Offer questions. Practice asking others what they want: Wil je koffie? Wil je mee naar de bioscoop? Wil je iets eten? This builds conversational fluency.
