Negation in Dutch

Making sentences negative in Dutch revolves around two key words: niet (not) and geen (no / not a). Choosing between them and knowing where to place them in the sentence are the two main challenges. The rules are quite logical once you understand the underlying principle: geen replaces indefinite articles, while niet handles everything else.

Getting negation right is essential from day one. You need it to say you do not have something, you do not like something, you are not going somewhere, or something is not true. Fortunately, the core rules are manageable, and with practice the correct word and position will start to feel natural.

Dutch does not use double negation in standard language — one negative element per clause is the norm.

Geen: Negating Indefinite Nouns

Use geen when the noun being negated has an indefinite article (een) or no article at all:

2. Move niet around. Take a sentence and try placing niet in different positions. Say each version aloud and notice which sounds right. This builds intuition for the "as late as possible" principle.

3. Negate your daily routine. Describe things you do not do: Ik drink geen koffie. Ik werk niet op zondag. Ik ga niet naar de sportschool. This gives you natural practice with both niet and geen.
