ように (Purpose/Manner) in Japanese
ように
Overview
The expression ように is a versatile A2 grammar point that serves multiple functions: expressing purpose ("so that"), manner ("in such a way that"), and comparison ("like"). It appears constantly in both spoken and written Japanese, and learning its various uses will significantly expand what you can communicate.
Unlike ために, which pairs with volitional verbs for intentional purpose, ように typically pairs with potential forms or negative forms to express a desired outcome that is not directly under the speaker's control. This distinction is subtle but important as you progress in Japanese.
You will also encounter ように in the fixed expressions ようにする (make an effort to) and ようになる (come to be able to / reach a state), which are fundamental to describing changes in ability and habit.
How It Works
Purpose: "so that"
Use the potential form or ない form of a verb + ように to express a goal or desired outcome.
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Potential + ように | 読めるように | so that (I) can read |
| ない form + ように | 忘れないように | so that (I) don't forget |
| Verb + ようにする | 早く寝るようにする | make an effort to sleep early |
| Verb + ようになる | 話せるようになる | come to be able to speak |
Manner: "in a way that"
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Verb + ように | 分かるように説明する | explain in a way that is understood |
Comparison: "like"
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + の + ように | 鳥のように | like a bird |
| Verb + ように | 彼が言うように | as he says |
Key distinction: ように vs. ために
| ように | ために |
|---|---|
| Non-volitional / potential / negative verbs | Volitional verbs |
| Outcome not directly controlled | Deliberate purpose |
| 忘れないように書いた | 日本語を学ぶために来た |

Common Mistakes
Using ように with volitional actions where ために is needed
- Wrong: 日本語を勉強するように日本に来ました。
- Right: 日本語を勉強するために日本に来ました。
- Why: "Studying" is a deliberate, volitional action. Use ために for intentional purpose. Use ように when the outcome is non-volitional (potential/negative form).
Confusing ようになる and ようにする
- Wrong: 毎日運動するようになっています。 (intending "I make an effort to exercise daily")
- Right: 毎日運動するようにしています。
- Why: ようにする means "make an effort to." ようになる means "has come to be" or "has reached the state of" -- it describes a change that happened, not ongoing effort.
Forgetting の when using nouns in comparisons
- Wrong: 鳥ように飛びたい。
- Right: 鳥のように飛びたい。
- Why: When a noun precedes ように in a comparison, you need the particle の between them.
Usage Notes
ように is register-neutral and appropriate in all contexts. In casual speech, you may hear ように shortened or blended into surrounding words, but the grammar remains the same.
The expressions ようにする and ようになる are particularly high-frequency. Japanese speakers use ようにしている constantly to describe habits they maintain ("I make sure to..."), and ようになった to describe abilities or situations that have changed over time.
Practice Tips
- Write five sentences about habits you maintain using ようにしている. For example: 毎朝水を飲むようにしています。
- Think about skills you have gained and describe them with ようになりました. This is a natural way to talk about your Japanese learning progress.
- Practice the ように/ために distinction by sorting purpose sentences into "controllable" (ために) and "desired outcome" (ように) categories.
