Temporal Connectors in Indonesian
Penghubung Waktu
Overview
Temporal connectors link clauses by expressing time relationships: when something happened, what happened before or after, and what happened simultaneously. Indonesian has a rich set of these connectors, including ketika/waktu (when), sebelum (before), sesudah/setelah (after), sementara/sambil (while), and sejak (since).
These connectors allow you to build complex sentences and tell stories with clear chronological relationships. They work similarly to English temporal conjunctions and can introduce either the first or second clause.
How It Works
Common Temporal Connectors
| Indonesian | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ketika / waktu | when | Ketika saya datang, dia sudah pergi. |
| sebelum | before | Sebelum tidur, saya baca buku. |
| sesudah / setelah | after | Setelah makan, kami pergi. |
| sementara | while (separate actions) | Sementara dia masak, saya bersih-bersih. |
| sambil | while (simultaneous) | Sambil menunggu, saya minum kopi. |
| sejak | since | Sejak pagi, dia bekerja. |
| begitu | as soon as | Begitu sampai, dia tidur. |
| sampai | until | Tunggu sampai selesai. |
| selama | during/for (duration) | Selama tiga hari. |
Connector Position
| Position | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Beginning | Ketika hujan, kami di dalam. | When it rains, we stay inside. |
| Middle | Kami di dalam ketika hujan. | We stay inside when it rains. |
Sambil vs. Sementara
| Sambil (same subject) | Sementara (different subjects) |
|---|---|
| Dia makan sambil baca. (He eats while reading.) | Dia makan sementara saya baca. (He eats while I read.) |
Examples in Context

| Setelah makan, kami pergi. | After eating, we left. | Following action |
| Sambil menunggu, saya minum kopi. | While waiting, I drank coffee. | Simultaneous, same subject |

Common Mistakes
Confusing sambil and sementara
- Wrong: Sambil dia masak, saya baca. (sambil with different subjects)
- Right: Sementara dia masak, saya baca.
- Why: Sambil is typically used when the same person does two things simultaneously. Sementara is for different subjects.
Using sesudah and setelah inconsistently
- Wrong: Worrying about the difference between sesudah and setelah
- Right: They are interchangeable — both mean "after"
- Why: Sesudah and setelah have the same meaning and can be used freely.
Forgetting the comma between clauses
- Wrong: Ketika dia datang saya pergi
- Right: Ketika dia datang, saya pergi.
- Why: A comma helps clarity when the temporal clause comes first, though it is sometimes omitted in casual writing.
Usage Notes
In casual speech, waktu is often preferred over ketika for "when," as ketika sounds slightly more literary. Sambil is extremely common in daily speech and is one of the most natural ways to describe multitasking. Sejak is used in both formal and informal contexts but appears especially in narratives and biographical descriptions.
Practice Tips
- Tell a story about your day using temporal connectors: Sebelum pergi kerja, saya sarapan. Sambil makan, saya baca berita. Setelah makan, saya berangkat.
- Practice the sambil pattern for describing multitasking: Sambil jalan, sambil bicara. Sambil belajar, sambil dengar musik.
