Negation in Indonesian

Overview

Indonesian has a clear and logical negation system. The most important thing to learn is that there are different negation words depending on what you are negating. Tidak negates verbs and adjectives, bukan negates nouns and pronouns, belum means "not yet," and jangan means "don't" (for commands).

This distinction is one of the few areas where Indonesian grammar requires a deliberate choice. English uses "not" for almost everything, but Indonesian asks you to think about what kind of word follows the negation. Once you master this distinction, negation becomes simple and predictable.

How It Works

Negation Words

Word Negates Example
tidak verbs, adjectives Saya tidak makan. (I don't eat.)
bukan nouns, pronouns Saya bukan guru. (I am not a teacher.)
belum "not yet" Belum siap. (Not ready yet.)
jangan imperative "don't" Jangan pergi! (Don't go!)

Tidak vs. Bukan

Tidak (verbs/adjectives) Bukan (nouns/pronouns)
Saya tidak tahu. (I don't know.) Saya bukan orang Indonesia. (I'm not Indonesian.)
Dia tidak cantik. (She isn't beautiful.) Ini bukan buku saya. (This isn't my book.)
Kami tidak pergi. (We don't go.) Bukan dia yang datang. (It wasn't he who came.)

Common Mistakes

Using tidak before nouns

  • Wrong: Saya tidak guru.
  • Right: Saya bukan guru.
  • Why: Tidak is for verbs and adjectives. For nouns, use bukan.

Using bukan before verbs

  • Wrong: Saya bukan pergi.
  • Right: Saya tidak pergi.
  • Why: Bukan is for nouns and pronouns. For verbs, use tidak.

Confusing belum and tidak

  • Wrong: Saya tidak makan (when you mean "not yet")
  • Right: Saya belum makan. (I haven't eaten yet.)
  • Why: Belum implies something has not happened yet but may happen later. Tidak is a flat "no."

Practice Tips

  1. When negating a sentence, first identify the word after the negation: is it a verb/adjective (use tidak) or a noun/pronoun (use bukan)? Practice this classification with flashcards.
  2. Use belum in your daily speech — it is extremely common. Indonesians often answer questions with just belum to mean "not yet."
