Discourse Particles in Indonesian
Partikel Wacana
Overview
Discourse particles are small words that add nuance, emotion, and social meaning to sentences. They are one of the most distinctive features of spoken Indonesian and are essential for sounding natural. The main particles are -lah (emphasis/softener), -kah (question marker), sih (casual emphasis), dong (urging/insistence), and kok (surprise/contradiction).
These particles rarely change the literal meaning of a sentence, but they dramatically change its tone and social function. Mastering them is the difference between textbook Indonesian and natural, conversational Indonesian.

Common Mistakes
Overusing particles in formal writing
- Wrong: Oleh karena itu sih, kita dong harus bekerja keras.
- Right: Oleh karena itu, kita harus bekerja keras.
- Why: Particles like sih, dong, and kok are strictly conversational. Never use them in formal writing.
Using dong aggressively
- Wrong: Using dong with strangers or authority figures
- Right: Reserve dong for peers and friends
- Why: Dong implies familiarity and can sound demanding. Using it with superiors is inappropriate.
Misplacing -lah
- Wrong: Lah pergi!
- Right: Pergilah! (-lah attaches to the verb)
- Why: -lah is a suffix/enclitic — it attaches to the word it modifies, usually the verb or the focused element.
Usage Notes
Discourse particles are primarily a feature of spoken Indonesian and informal writing (texting, social media). They vary by region — Jakarta speakers use sih, dong, kok, deh, nih, tuh extensively, while speakers from other regions may have different particles. The suffix -lah is more universal and appears even in literary Indonesian. Learning to use these particles naturally takes time and exposure to native speech. Start by using kan (right?) and ya (tag question), which are the safest and most universal.
Practice Tips
- Listen to Indonesian conversations (movies, YouTube, podcasts) and identify particles. Notice how they change the tone of sentences.
- Start with safe particles: kan? (right?), ya? (right?), and deh (alright then). These can be used in most casual situations without risk.
