Colors in Indonesian
Overview
Color words in Indonesian work just like other adjectives: they follow the noun they describe. Baju merah means "red shirt" (literally "shirt red"). This is consistent with the general Indonesian rule that modifiers come after the noun.
The word warna means "color" and is often used when talking about colors in general or when asking about color: Warna apa? (What color?). Indonesian color terms are simple and do not change form for any grammatical reason.

Common Mistakes
Putting color before the noun
- Wrong: merah baju
- Right: baju merah
- Why: Like all Indonesian adjectives, colors follow the noun.
Confusing muda (light) and tua (dark) for colors
- Wrong: biru tua for "light blue"
- Right: biru muda (light blue); biru tua (dark blue)
- Why: Muda (young/light) and tua (old/dark) are used metaphorically for color shades.
Using merah muda and pink inconsistently
- Wrong: Assuming merah muda and pink are different colors
- Right: They both mean "pink" — merah muda is the traditional term, pink is borrowed from English
- Why: Both are widely understood. Merah muda is more formal; pink is common in casual speech.
Practice Tips
- Look around you and name the colors of objects: meja cokelat (brown table), dinding putih (white wall), langit biru (blue sky).
- Practice asking and answering color questions: Warna apa? — Warna merah. (What color? — Red.)
