Purpose and Result Clauses in Hungarian

Overview

Purpose clauses express "in order to" or "so that," while result clauses express "so...that" or "as a result." Hungarian uses hogy (that) as the core conjunction for both, combined with different main-clause correlatives and subordinate-clause moods. At the CEFR B1 level, these structures are essential for expressing intentions, goals, and consequences.

Purpose clauses typically use azért hogy (in order to) or just hogy with the imperative/subjunctive mood in the subordinate clause. Result clauses use úgyhogy (so that, as a result) or annyira...hogy (so much...that) with the indicative.

The distinction between purpose (intended outcome) and result (actual outcome) determines both the conjunction and the mood of the subordinate verb.

Common Mistakes

Using indicative in purpose clauses

• Wrong: Azért jöttem, hogy segítek. (indicative)
• Right: Azért jöttem, hogy segítsek. (subjunctive/imperative)
• Why: Purpose clauses require the imperative/subjunctive mood because the action is intended, not yet realized.

Confusing purpose and result

• Wrong: Annyira tanultam, hogy megértsem. (result structure + purpose mood)
• Right: Úgy tanultam, hogy megértsem. (purpose) OR Annyira tanultam, hogy megértettem. (result)
• Why: Purpose uses subjunctive mood; result uses indicative. The correlative also differs.

Omitting azért in purpose clauses

• Wrong: While sometimes acceptable, dropping azért can make the clause ambiguous
• Right: Include azért for clarity when the purpose relationship might be unclear
• Why: Azért explicitly signals purpose, preventing confusion with other hogy-clauses.

Usage Notes

Úgyhogy (so, as a result) is extremely common in spoken Hungarian for connecting consequences to events. It functions at the sentence boundary and can start a new sentence: Esett az eső. Úgyhogy nem mentünk. (It was raining. So we didn't go.)

The infinitive alternative (Jöttem segíteni) is preferred when the subject of both clauses is the same, as it is more concise.

• Express five results using annyira/olyan...hogy: Annyira fáradt voltam, hogy...
