Expressing Possession (Nekem van) in Hungarian
Birtoklás Kifejezése
Overview
Hungarian has no verb meaning "to have." Instead, possession is expressed using a dative pronoun + van/nincs construction: Nekem van (to-me there-is) means "I have." This structure is fundamentally different from English and takes time to internalize, but it is one of the most frequently used constructions in Hungarian.
At the CEFR A1 level, learners must master the dative pronoun forms (nekem, neked, neki, nekünk, nektek, nekik), combine them with van/nincs, and add possessive suffixes to the owned noun. The full pattern — Nekem van egy kutyám (I have a dog, literally "to-me there-is a my-dog") — involves three interlocking elements.
The negative is formed with nincs/nincsenek rather than nem van, consistent with the existential construction pattern.
How It Works
Dative Pronouns
| Person | Dative form | English |
|---|---|---|
| én | nekem | to me |
| te | neked | to you |
| ő | neki | to him/her |
| mi | nekünk | to us |
| ti | nektek | to you (pl) |
| ők | nekik | to them |
Basic Possession Pattern
Dative pronoun + van + (egy) + noun with possessive suffix
| Hungarian | Literal | English |
|---|---|---|
| Nekem van egy kutyám. | To-me is a my-dog. | I have a dog. |
| Neked van autód? | To-you is your-car? | Do you have a car? |
| Neki van háza. | To-him/her is his/her-house. | He/She has a house. |
Dropping the Dative Pronoun
In casual speech, the dative pronoun is often dropped because the possessive suffix on the noun already indicates the person:
- Van kutyám. = I have a dog.
- Van időd? = Do you have time?
Negative: Nincs / Nincsenek
| Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|
| Van pénzem. | Nincs pénzem. |
| Vannak barátaim. | Nincsenek barátaim. |
| Neki van autója. | Neki nincs autója. |
Examples in Context
| Hungarian | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Nekem van egy kutyám. | I have a dog. | full form |
| Van időd? | Do you have time? | pronoun dropped |
| Nincs pénzem. | I don't have money. | negative |
| Nekik van egy házuk. | They have a house. | full form |
| Van testvéred? | Do you have a sibling? | question |
| Nincs autóm. | I don't have a car. | negative |
| Nekünk van kertünk. | We have a garden. | full form |
| Van elég idő? | Is there enough time? | general, no possessor |
| Neki nincs családja. | He/She has no family. | negative with pronoun |
| Nincsenek gyerekeim. | I don't have children. | negative plural |
Common Mistakes
Trying to use a "have" verb
- Wrong: Looking for a Hungarian equivalent of "I have"
- Right: Nekem van...
- Why: Hungarian expresses possession through existence (van) + dative. There is no separate verb for "to have."
Using nem van instead of nincs
- Wrong: Nem van pénzem.
- Right: Nincs pénzem.
- Why: The negative of possessive van uses nincs, just like existential constructions.
Forgetting the possessive suffix on the noun
- Wrong: Nekem van egy kutya.
- Right: Nekem van egy kutyám. (-m = my)
- Why: The possessed noun must carry a possessive suffix matching the possessor. Without it, the sentence is incomplete.
Mismatching pronoun and suffix
- Wrong: Nekem van egy kutyád. (my + your)
- Right: Nekem van egy kutyám. (my + my)
- Why: The dative pronoun and the possessive suffix must agree in person.
Usage Notes
In everyday Hungarian, the dative pronoun is frequently omitted, especially in first and second person, because the possessive suffix makes the owner clear. The full form with the pronoun is used for emphasis or contrast: NEKEM van autóm, neked nincs. (I have a car, you don't.)
Questions about possession typically omit the pronoun: Van kutyád? rather than Neked van kutyád? The latter sounds emphatic ("Do YOU have a dog?").
Practice Tips
- Practice the full pattern with all six persons: Nekem van... Neked van... Neki van... with different nouns.
- Drill negative pairs: Van pénzem. → Nincs pénzem. Van időd? → Nincs időd?
- List five things you have and five you do not have: Van laptopom. Nincs autóm.
