Conditional Sentences in Hungarian

Overview

Conditional sentences in Hungarian use the conjunction ha (if) to express conditions and their consequences. Like many languages, Hungarian distinguishes between real conditions (likely or factual) and unreal conditions (hypothetical or counterfactual). The key difference is mood: real conditions use the indicative, while unreal conditions use the conditional mood.

At the CEFR B1 level, learners should master real conditions (present indicative), unreal present conditions (conditional mood), and gain exposure to past counterfactual conditions (past + volna). The logical structure is clear, and the mood system consistently signals which type of condition is intended.

Hungarian conditional sentences are more transparent than English ones because the verb mood explicitly marks the reality status of the condition.

How It Works

Type 1: Real Conditions (Indicative)

Ha + indicative, indicative

Used for conditions likely to be fulfilled:

Type 2: Unreal Present Conditions (Conditional)

Used for hypothetical, unlikely, or imaginary situations:

Type 3: Past Counterfactual (Past + Volna)

Used for situations that did not happen in the past:

Word Order

Ha introduces the condition clause. The main clause can come first or second:

• Ha jössz, örülök. — If you come, I'm happy.
• Örülök, ha jössz. — I'm happy if you come.

Common Mistakes

Mixing moods between clauses

• Wrong: Ha lenne időm, megyek. (conditional + indicative)
• Right: Ha lenne időm, mennék. (conditional + conditional)
• Why: In unreal conditions, both clauses should use the conditional mood.

Using conditional for real conditions

• Wrong: Ha jönnél, örülnék. (when the event is likely)
• Right: Ha jössz, örülök. (indicative for real/likely conditions)
• Why: If the condition is realistically possible, use the indicative. The conditional signals unreality.

Wrong volna position in past counterfactual

• Wrong: Ha volna tudtam, volna mentem.
• Right: Ha tudtam volna, mentem volna.
• Why: Volna follows the past tense verb, not the other way around.

Usage Notes

In everyday speech, Hungarians sometimes use conditional in both clauses even for semi-real conditions, as a way of being tentative: Ha lenne időd, megcsinálnád? (If you had time, would you do it?) — this might be a real possibility expressed politely.

The counterfactual past with volna is considered somewhat formal. In casual speech, Hungarians sometimes simplify: Ha tudtam volna... becomes Ha tudtam vóna... (colloquial pronunciation).

Practice Tips

• Create three versions of the same scenario: real (Ha jössz...), unreal (Ha jönnél...), counterfactual (Ha jöttél volna...).
• Practice everyday conditions: Ha esik, esernyőt viszek. Ha szép az idő, sétálok.
• Write five "if I were..." sentences to drill the unreal conditional.
