Complex Agreement Patterns in Hebrew

This article is part of the Hebrew grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Hebrew normally makes verbs, adjectives, and numbers match a noun's grammatical gender and number. The difficult cases are the ones in which meaning and grammatical form pull in different directions: a group noun remains singular, a mixed group normally takes masculine plural agreement, and numbers 11–19 use gendered compound forms. Non-human plurals usually take plural agreement in present-day Hebrew, while feminine-singular agreement with them belongs mainly to older, elevated, or fixed usage.
Overview
Agreement means changing one word so that it matches another. In Hebrew, the relevant features are usually gender—masculine or feminine—and number—singular or plural. A subject is the person or thing that performs an action or is described. Thus, in הממשלה החליטה “the government decided,” the verb החליטה is feminine singular because its subject, הממשלה, is grammatically feminine singular.
At A1, agreement often looks mechanical: ילד טוב, ילדה טובה, ילדים טובים, ילדות טובות. At B2, you must first identify what controls the agreement. A noun may denote many people but still be grammatically singular; two coordinated nouns may create a mixed-gender plural; and a number phrase has its own gender rules. English often leaves these distinctions unmarked, so translating word by word does not tell you which Hebrew form to choose.
This article focuses on four recurring challenges: collective nouns, mixed-gender groups, 11–19, and hundreds. It also separates ordinary Modern Hebrew from an older non-human agreement pattern that advanced learners may encounter in biblical quotations, literary prose, and fossilized expressions.
How It Works
Collective nouns agree as singular nouns
A collective noun is one singular word that names a group. Hebrew generally follows the grammatical form of that word, not the number of people represented by it.
| Hebrew | English | Agreement |
|---|---|---|
| הממשלה החליטה. | The government decided. | ממשלה is feminine singular. |
| הקבוצה ניצחה. | The team won. | קבוצה is feminine singular. |
| הקהל מחכה בחוץ. | The audience is waiting outside. | קהל is masculine singular. |
| הצוות מוכן. | The staff/team is ready. | צוות is masculine singular. |
English permits plural agreement with some collectives, especially in British usage: “the team are ready.” Standard Hebrew does not copy that choice. Say הצוות מוכן, not הצוות מוכנים. If you want to present the people as individuals, make those people the grammatical subject: חברי הצוות מוכנים “the team members are ready.”
Some quantity expressions need separate attention. In רוב הסטודנטים הגיעו “most of the students arrived,” plural agreement is natural because the phrase points to plural people. With a partitive such as חלק מהעובדים, both meaning and register can influence agreement, and usage varies. Rewording as כמה מהעובדים “some of the workers” often avoids uncertainty.
Coordinated and mixed-gender subjects
A coordinated subject joins two or more subjects, usually with ו־ “and.” Together they normally count as plural. If every human member is feminine, use feminine plural. If the group contains masculine and feminine members, standard Hebrew uses masculine plural as the default.
| Composition | Hebrew | English |
|---|---|---|
| Men or masculine nouns only | הסטודנטים עייפים. | The male students are tired. |
| Women or feminine nouns only | הסטודנטיות עייפות. | The female students are tired. |
| Mixed human group | הסטודנטים והסטודנטיות עייפים. | The male and female students are tired. |
| One masculine + one feminine subject | דנה ויואב הגיעו. | Dana and Yoav arrived. |
In the past tense, the written third-person plural form often looks the same for all genders: למדו, הגיעו, כתבו. Gender becomes visible in present-tense forms and adjectives: לומדים/לומדות, מוכנים/מוכנות. Pronouns also reveal the choice: a mixed group is referred to as הם, not הן, in traditional standard agreement.
The masculine default remains the conventional grammatical rule, but contemporary speakers and institutions increasingly use inclusive wording. Common strategies include naming both groups—תלמידות ותלמידים—addressing each form separately, or choosing a noun that reduces repeated gender marking. Typographic forms such as slashes may be suitable on a form or poster but are awkward to pronounce in continuous speech.
Numbers 11–19
Hebrew cardinal numbers have gender. For 11–19, choose the whole number form according to the counted noun. A counted noun is simply the person or thing being counted. Masculine nouns take the masculine number series; feminine nouns take the feminine series.
| Number | With a masculine noun | With a feminine noun |
|---|---|---|
The masculine unit in 13–19 has the longer form, such as שלושה, ארבעה, and חמישה. Its second component is עשר. The feminine series generally uses the shorter unit—שלוש, ארבע, חמש—plus עשרה. Eleven and twelve must be learned separately.
The noun after 11–19 is normally plural: חמישה עשר ספרים, חמש עשרה דקות. Do not choose the form from the noun's ending alone. לילה ends in ־ה but is masculine, so “fifteen nights” is חמישה עשר לילות. Conversely, עיר has no feminine ending but is feminine: שלוש עשרה ערים.
In careful speech, the number agrees with the noun even when the noun is omitted but understood: כמה מחברות קנית? — חמש עשרה. “How many notebooks did you buy? — Fifteen.” Here מחברות is feminine, so the feminine number is retained.
Hundreds
The noun מאה “hundred” is feminine. Two hundred has a special dual form, מאתיים. From 300 through 900, use the feminine form of 3–9 before the plural construct form מאות: שלוש מאות, ארבע מאות, חמש מאות.
| Hebrew | English | Structure |
|---|---|---|
| מאה | one hundred | singular מאה |
| מאתיים | two hundred | special dual form |
| שלוש מאות | three hundred | feminine שלוש + מאות |
| חמש מאות | five hundred | feminine חמש + מאות |
| תשע מאות | nine hundred | feminine תשע + מאות |
For a compound number, each part keeps its own structure: שלוש מאות וחמישה עשר תלמידים “315 male students,” but שלוש מאות וחמש עשרה תלמידות “315 female students.” The hundreds component remains שלוש מאות; the final 15 changes to agree with the people counted.
Non-human plural subjects
In ordinary contemporary Hebrew, non-human plural subjects generally take plural verbs and plural adjectives just as human plurals do:
- הספרים נפלו. — The books fell.
- המכוניות החדשות יקרות. — The new cars are expensive.
- החלונות פתוחים. — The windows are open.
You may nevertheless encounter a feminine-singular verb with a non-human plural subject in Biblical Hebrew or language deliberately modeled on it. This is an older agreement pattern, sometimes called non-human plural agreement: plural things can be treated as a collective and receive feminine-singular verbal agreement. It is important for recognition, but it is not a productive rule to apply throughout neutral Modern Hebrew.
Do not confuse that historical pattern with two ordinary modern structures. First, a genuinely feminine-singular collective takes feminine singular because of its noun form: הממשלה החליטה. Second, a verb placed before a plural subject may sometimes appear singular, especially in formal presentational syntax; that is a word-order agreement issue, not specifically a rule about inanimate objects.
Examples in Context
| Hebrew | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| הממשלה החליטה לשנות את התוכנית. | The government decided to change the plan. | Feminine-singular collective |
| הקהל היה שקט במשך ההרצאה. | The audience was quiet during the lecture. | Masculine-singular collective |
| חברי הוועדה הצביעו בעד ההצעה. | The committee members voted for the proposal. | Members are explicitly plural |
| הסטודנטים והסטודנטיות למדו יחד. | The male and female students studied together. | Mixed group; plural past form |
| נועה ואמיר מוכנים לצאת. | Noa and Amir are ready to leave. | Masculine plural is visible in מוכנים |
| רות ומאיה מוכנות לצאת. | Ruth and Maya are ready to leave. | All-feminine group |
| חמישה עשר ילדים חיכו לאוטובוס. | Fifteen children waited for the bus. | Masculine teen number |
| חמש עשרה ילדות השתתפו בתחרות. | Fifteen girls took part in the competition. | Feminine teen number |
| קראתי שנים עשר ספרים השנה. | I read twelve books this year. | ספר is masculine |
| חיכינו שתים עשרה דקות. | We waited twelve minutes. | דקה is feminine |
| במוזיאון ביקרו שלוש מאות איש. | Three hundred people visited the museum. | מאה is feminine; איש is a fixed counting noun here |
| נרשמו שלוש מאות וחמישה עשר תלמידים. | Three hundred and fifteen male students registered. | Final component agrees with תלמידים |
| המכוניות החדשות חונות בחוץ. | The new cars are parked outside. | Normal Modern Hebrew plural agreement |
| החלונות הגדולים היו פתוחים. | The large windows were open. | Non-human masculine plural |
Common Mistakes
Making a collective noun plural by meaning
- Wrong: הממשלה החליטו לפרסם הודעה.
- Right: הממשלה החליטה לפרסם הודעה.
- Why: ממשלה represents many people but is grammatically feminine singular. Use חברי הממשלה החליטו if the members are the subject.
Using feminine plural for a mixed group
- Wrong: דנה ויואב מוכנות.
- Right: דנה ויואב מוכנים.
- Why: In conventional standard Hebrew, a mixed-gender human group takes masculine plural agreement.
Building 15 from the wrong gender series
- Wrong: חמש עשרה ילדים
- Right: חמישה עשר ילדים
- Why: ילד is masculine. Use the masculine components חמישה + עשר. With ילדות, use חמש עשרה.
Guessing gender from the last letter
- Wrong: חמש עשרה לילות
- Right: חמישה עשר לילות
- Why: לילה is masculine despite its final ־ה. Learn a noun together with its gender.
Saying “three hundreds” with a masculine number
- Wrong: שלושה מאות
- Right: שלוש מאות
- Why: מאה is feminine, so hundreds from 300 to 900 use feminine 3–9 forms.
Applying an old non-human rule to everyday Hebrew
- Unnatural in neutral Modern Hebrew: המכוניות הגיעה.
- Normal: המכוניות הגיעו.
- Why: Modern Hebrew normally uses plural agreement here. Feminine-singular agreement with non-human plurals is mainly a feature to recognize in older or elevated texts.
Usage Notes
Everyday speech sometimes reduces distinctions that careful standard speech preserves, particularly in long numbers. You may hear speakers mix number genders or use a simpler form under time pressure. For clear formal speech, exams, broadcasting, and edited writing, keep the counted noun's gender consistent throughout 11–19 and in the final part of a compound number.
Collective agreement is much more stable. Singular ממשלה, קבוצה, משפחה, and צוות normally require singular agreement. If a sentence begins to feel semantically plural, Hebrew often solves the tension by changing the head noun—the main noun that controls agreement—to חברי..., אנשי..., or another explicit plural.
Inclusive language is changing quickly and differs by institution, community, and medium. Paired forms are common in public announcements and writing addressed directly to a broad audience. They do not eliminate the conventional masculine-plural agreement rule inside a sentence, but they give speakers alternatives to relying on it everywhere.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
With two singular subjects joined by ו־, plural agreement is the safest neutral choice. When the verb comes before its subjects, however, formal and literary Hebrew may show partial agreement, where the verb agrees only with the nearest subject: הגיעה נועה ואמיר. Many speakers prefer full plural agreement—הגיעו נועה ואמיר—especially when both participants are equally prominent. Recognize both patterns, but do not mistake preverbal singular agreement for a collective-noun rule.
Agreement can also follow intended meaning after a quantity phrase. Expressions such as רוב, מחצית, and חלק create variation because the opening quantity word may be singular while the following group is plural. In careful writing, choose the viewpoint deliberately and keep it consistent; if the sentence sounds strained, recast it with רוב האנשים... or כמה מן המשתתפים... and use the agreement natural for the people meant.
Finally, number gender interacts with ellipsis—the omission of a word understood from context—and with conventional uses such as dates, bus routes, addresses, and arithmetic. Spoken conventions in those domains do not always behave like straightforward counting. First master agreement in full noun phrases such as שנים עשר ספרים and שתים עשרה שאלות; then learn domain-specific conventions as separate patterns rather than treating them as exceptions to everything.
Practice Tips
- Make two columns of common nouns, masculine and feminine. Say 11, 12, and 15 with each noun aloud: אחד עשר ספרים, אחת עשרה שאלות, and so on.
- Rewrite collective sentences in two ways: הקבוצה ניצחה and שחקני הקבוצה ניצחו. This trains you to identify the noun that actually controls agreement.
- While reading, underline each subject and circle its verb or adjective. Label the pair masculine/feminine and singular/plural; mark older non-human singular agreement for recognition rather than imitation.
