Academic and Journalistic Register in Hebrew

In Brief
Academic and journalistic Hebrew is a formal written register built from precise source attribution, abstract nouns, logical connectors, and measured or impersonal claims. Typical frames include על פי המחקר “according to the study,” מתברר כי “it turns out that,” and מן הראוי לציין כי “it is worth noting that.” Good formal Hebrew is not simply longer or more ornate than speech: its main goals are clarity, evidence, and a visible line of reasoning.
Overview
A register is the style of language chosen for a particular setting. Hebrew newspaper analysis, research summaries, university essays, policy reports, and serious commentary share many grammatical habits, even though they are not identical genres. They tend to identify sources, package actions as concepts, connect claims explicitly, and avoid presenting every statement as the writer’s personal opinion.
At C1, the challenge is not a single verb form. It is learning to combine structures you already know into sustained, appropriately formal prose. This includes nominalization (expressing an action or quality as a noun), subordination (placing one clause inside or under another), passive and impersonal wording, and connectors that show cause, contrast, concession, or conclusion. For example, conversational בדקו איך התוכנית השפיעה על התלמידים “they checked how the program affected the students” can become נבדקה השפעת התוכנית על התלמידים “the program’s effect on the students was examined.”
English-speaking learners often transfer long English noun strings or use “according to” without naming a real source. Hebrew formal prose frequently uses the construct state, prepositional phrases, and clauses with ש־ or כי instead. The aim is therefore not word-for-word conversion from English academic prose, but control of patterns that Hebrew readers expect.
How It Works
Build a claim around a source
Formal writing distinguishes the information from its source. This creates precision and lets the writer report a position without endorsing it.
| Hebrew frame | Usual function | English equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| על פי המחקר / הדוח / הנתונים | Cites evidence or an authoritative text | according to the study/report/data |
| לדברי החוקרים | Attributes words or a view to people | according to the researchers |
| לטענת המבקרים | Attributes a claim, often one that may be disputed | critics claim / according to critics |
| מן הנתונים עולה כי... | Presents an inference from data | the data show/suggest that... |
| המחקר מצביע על כך ש־... | States what evidence indicates | the study indicates that... |
| נמסר כי... | Reports information without foregrounding the reporter | it was reported/announced that... |
Do not treat these frames as interchangeable. על פי should be followed by a source or basis. לדברי introduces what someone said or communicated. לטענת marks a claim and can create distance: the writer is not necessarily confirming it. עולה כי presents a conclusion drawn from evidence.
After כך, Hebrew normally uses attached ש־: המחקר מצביע על כך שהשינוי הצליח. With reporting verbs and impersonal frames, both כי and ש־ can introduce a content clause (a clause giving the content of a statement): החוקרים מצאו כי... / החוקרים מצאו ש־.... כי is strongly associated with formal prose, while ש־ remains fully acceptable and is often lighter. Repeating כי many times does not automatically make a text better.
Turn processes into nouns
Nominalization allows a writer to discuss an event as a topic, cause, result, or object of analysis.
| Verb-based wording | Nominal wording | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| המחירים עלו במהירות | העלייה המהירה במחירים | “Prices rose rapidly” becomes “the rapid rise in prices” |
| יישמו את התוכנית | יישום התוכנית | Focus shifts from the actor to implementation |
| בדקו את התוצאות | בדיקת התוצאות | The investigation becomes a named process |
| הציבור התנגד להצעה | התנגדות הציבור להצעה | The opposition can now serve as a subject or cause |
| המערכת השתפרה | השיפור במערכת | The change becomes an abstract topic |
Many such phrases use סמיכות, the construct state: two adjacent nouns forming a unit such as יישום התוכנית “implementation of the program” or תגובת הממשלה “the government’s response.” Definiteness is generally marked on the final noun: יישום התוכנית, not היישום התוכנית. When the phrase becomes hard to parse, a construction with של may be clearer, and a finite clause may be clearer still.
Nominalization is useful for compression and cohesion, but too much of it hides who did what. Compare לאחר קבלת ההחלטה בוצע שינוי במדיניות “after the decision was received/made, a policy change was carried out” with the clearer לאחר שהוועדה קיבלה את ההחלטה, המשרד שינה את מדיניותו “after the committee made the decision, the ministry changed its policy.” Formal does not have to mean agentless.
Use impersonal and passive frames carefully
Hebrew can background the actor with passive verbs or impersonal predicates. This is useful when the actor is unknown, obvious, unimportant, or deliberately not the focus.
| Pattern | Example | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Passive past | נבדקו שלוש חלופות | Three alternatives were examined |
| Passive present | הנושא נבחן כעת | The issue is currently being examined |
| Impersonal modal | ניתן להסיק כי... | It is possible to conclude that... |
| Evaluative frame | מן הראוי לציין כי... | It is worth noting that... |
| Evidential frame | מתברר כי... | It turns out / becomes clear that... |
| Necessity frame | יש להביא בחשבון את... | One must take ... into account |
In ניתן לומר, ניתן does not mean that something was physically “given.” The whole expression means “it is possible to say.” Likewise, יש לציין is a conventional “it should be noted,” not a statement of possession.
Agreement still matters. A passive participle (a verb form used here like a present-tense predicate) agrees with its grammatical subject: ההצעה נבחנת, הנושאים נבחנים, החלופות נבחנות. In the past, the passive verb also agrees: נבדקה חלופה אחת but נבדקו שלוש חלופות.
Show the logical relationship
Connectors guide the reader through the argument. Choose one for its meaning, not merely because it sounds formal.
| Relationship | Common formal connectors | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Addition | נוסף על כך, כמו כן, יתרה מזו | in addition, likewise, moreover |
| Contrast | לעומת זאת, מנגד, ואולם | by contrast, on the other hand, however |
| Concession | אף על פי ש־, למרות, על אף | although, despite |
| Cause | משום ש־, מאחר ש־, בשל, עקב | because, due to |
| Result | לפיכך, על כן, כתוצאה מכך | therefore, consequently |
| Example or clarification | למשל, כלומר, במילים אחרות | for example, that is, in other words |
| Summary | לסיכום, בסיכומו של דבר | in summary, ultimately |
The grammar after the connector matters. למרות, על אף, בשל, and עקב normally introduce a noun phrase: למרות הקשיים, בשל המחסור בתקציב. To introduce a full clause, use forms such as אף על פי ש־ or משום ש־: אף על פי שהיו קשיים, משום שהתקציב קוצץ.
Qualify claims instead of overstating them
Academic prose often marks the strength and scope of a conclusion. Hebrew does this with modal and evidential expressions:
- נראה כי... — it appears that...
- ייתכן ש־... — it is possible that...
- ככל הנראה... — apparently / in all likelihood...
- במידה רבה — to a large extent
- עשוי / עלול — may; עלול generally signals an undesirable possibility
- אין להסיק מכך כי... — one should not infer from this that...
This kind of caution is sometimes called hedging: limiting a claim so that it matches the available evidence. It is not weakness. הממצאים מוכיחים “the findings prove” is appropriate only when the evidence truly supports such certainty; הממצאים מצביעים על “the findings indicate” is often more defensible.
Examples in Context
| Hebrew | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| מן הראוי לציין כי המדגם היה קטן יחסית. | It is worth noting that the sample was relatively small. | Evaluates an important limitation. |
| לסיכום ניתן לומר שהמדיניות השיגה רק חלק מיעדיה. | In summary, one can say that the policy achieved only some of its goals. | Impersonal conclusion; ש־ is natural after לומר. |
| על פי המחקר, שעות שינה סדירות קשורות לשיפור בריכוז. | According to the study, regular sleep hours are associated with improved concentration. | Names the evidential source. |
| מתברר כי הפער בין הקבוצות הצטמצם במהלך השנה. | It turns out that the gap between the groups narrowed during the year. | Reports an emerging finding. |
| מן הנתונים עולה כי רוב המשתתפים תמכו בהצעה. | The data indicate that most participants supported the proposal. | Inference from evidence. |
| לטענת המתנגדים, התוכנית אינה נותנת מענה לפריפריה. | Opponents claim that the program does not address the periphery. | Attributes a contestable position. |
| נבדקו שלוש חלופות, אך אף אחת מהן לא נמצאה מתאימה. | Three alternatives were examined, but none was found suitable. | Passive wording keeps the alternatives in focus. |
| יישום ההמלצות מחייב שיתוף פעולה בין המשרדים. | Implementing the recommendations requires cooperation between the ministries. | Nominalization with a construct phrase. |
| אף על פי שהתקציב גדל, איכות השירות לא השתפרה במידה ניכרת. | Although the budget increased, service quality did not improve substantially. | Concession followed by a full clause. |
| התקציב קוצץ; לפיכך נדחה מועד פתיחת המרכז. | The budget was cut; therefore, the center’s opening date was postponed. | Explicit cause-to-result progression. |
| מחד גיסא, הטכנולוגיה מרחיבה את הנגישות; מאידך גיסא, היא מעוררת שאלות של פרטיות. | On the one hand, technology expands access; on the other, it raises privacy questions. | Balanced formal contrast. |
| אין להסיק מן הממצאים כי התופעה מאפיינת את כלל האוכלוסייה. | One should not infer from the findings that the phenomenon characterizes the entire population. | Restricts the scope of a conclusion. |
| לדברי השרה, ההחלטה תיבחן מחדש בחודש הבא. | According to the minister, the decision will be reconsidered next month. | Attributes a reported statement. |
| נוסף על כך, החוקרים מצביעים על הצורך במחקר ארוך טווח. | In addition, the researchers point to the need for long-term research. | Adds a related point. |
Common Mistakes
Treating every attribution phrase as “according to”
- Wrong: על פי החוקרים אמרו שהניסוי הצליח.
- Right: לדברי החוקרים, הניסוי הצליח. / על פי המחקר, הניסוי הצליח.
- Why: לדברי החוקרים attributes words to people; על פי המחקר identifies a study as the basis. Do not combine על פי with an extra finite אמרו in this way.
Putting a clause directly after a noun-taking connector
- Wrong: למרות שהתקציב קוצץ, הפרויקט נמשך.
- Better in carefully edited formal prose: אף על פי שהתקציב קוצץ, הפרויקט נמשך.
- Also right: למרות הקיצוץ בתקציב, הפרויקט נמשך.
- Why: למרות traditionally takes a noun phrase, whereas אף על פי ש־ introduces a clause. למרות ש־ is extremely common in contemporary Hebrew, including much published writing, but some editors still prefer the distinction in formal texts.
Marking definiteness twice in a construct phrase
- Wrong: היישום התוכנית החל בינואר.
- Right: יישום התוכנית החל בינואר.
- Why: In the construct phrase יישום התוכנית, the definiteness of התוכנית makes the whole phrase definite. The first noun does not take ה־.
Using an impersonal formula with the wrong complement
- Wrong: ניתן שמסיקים כי חל שינוי.
- Right: ניתן להסיק כי חל שינוי.
- Why: ניתן in this pattern is followed by an infinitive (the “to” form of a verb): לומר, להניח, להסיק, לראות.
Making passive forms disagree with their subject
- Wrong: נבדק שלוש חלופות.
- Right: נבדקו שלוש חלופות.
- Why: The plural subject שלוש חלופות requires a plural passive verb. Word order does not remove agreement.
Confusing formality with unnecessary complexity
- Weak: במסגרת ביצועו של תהליך עריכת הבדיקה התבצעה בחינה של הנתונים.
- Clearer: במהלך הבדיקה בחנו החוקרים את הנתונים.
- Why: Stacked nominalizations and vague passive verbs make the actor and action hard to find. A direct sentence can still be fully academic.
Usage Notes
Academic and journalistic Hebrew overlap, but they have different priorities. Academic prose usually documents methods, defines terms, cites earlier work, and qualifies conclusions. News writing often places the newest or most important information early, identifies speakers, and alternates between direct quotation and reported claims. An opinion column may use rhetorical questions and a stronger personal voice than a research paper.
Punctuation and paragraphing do part of the grammatical work. Long Hebrew sentences remain readable when each clause has a clear role, but piling up several ש־ clauses can obscure the structure. If a reader must search for the main verb, split the sentence. A connector at the beginning of every sentence can also feel mechanical; logical continuity may already be clear from the subjects and vocabulary.
Gendered forms require attention. A generic plural such as חוקרים טוענים may be conventional, but institutions increasingly choose paired forms, collective nouns, or reformulations where inclusion matters. Follow the style guide of the publication or institution rather than inventing punctuation-heavy forms in a formal submission.
Typography varies between publishers. The prefix ש־ is attached to its following word, and careful typography may show a maqaf in cited forms such as ש־. In normal running text you will usually see שהמחקר, not a separated ש המחקר. Consistency is more important than adding visibly formal punctuation everywhere.
Beyond the Basics: Voice, Stance, and Information Flow
Advanced control means choosing who appears as the grammatical subject. החוקרים ניתחו את הנתונים foregrounds the researchers; הנתונים נותחו foregrounds the data; ניתוח הנתונים העלה כי... foregrounds the analytical process and its result. All three can be correct. The best choice depends on what the paragraph is already about.
A polished paragraph usually maintains a clear chain of topics. Consider this progression: המחקר בחן... הממצאים מצביעים... עם זאת, אין להסיק מהם... The repeated movement from study to findings to limits is easier to follow than a sequence of unrelated abstract nouns. Pronouns and attached prepositions such as מהם “from them” help maintain cohesion, but only when their reference is unmistakable.
Journalistic attribution also carries stance. השר אמר neutrally reports speech; השר טען can imply that the statement is a claim requiring support; השר הודה presupposes that the acknowledged fact is true and potentially unwelcome. Reporting verbs are therefore not decorative synonyms. They subtly shape how readers evaluate the source.
Formal paired structures can organize complex comparisons:
- מחד גיסא... מאידך גיסא... — on the one hand... on the other hand...
- לא זו בלבד ש־... אלא ש־... — not only... but also...
- ככל ש־... כך... — the more/as... the more/so...
- בין ש־... ובין ש־... — whether... or...
These structures are effective when both halves are grammatically parallel. If the first half contains a clause and the second only an isolated noun, the contrast feels unfinished. They should also serve a real argument; overusing them makes prose ceremonious rather than precise.
Finally, distinguish a cautious claim from an empty one. ייתכן ש־ is useful when uncertainty is real. Repeatedly writing ניתן לומר כי ייתכן ש־ can blur responsibility without adding nuance. State what the evidence supports, name the limitation, and choose one appropriate marker of certainty.
Practice Tips
- Rewrite one short news paragraph three ways. First foreground the actor, then use a passive construction, then use a nominalization. Ask what each version makes the topic of the sentence.
- Build a connector notebook by relationship, not alphabetically. Keep separate groups for contrast, concession, cause, result, and summary, and record whether each connector takes a noun phrase or a full clause.
- Audit real texts for sources and certainty. Underline phrases such as לדברי, לטענת, עולה כי, נראה כי, and אין להסיק. Then note whether the writer reports, endorses, distances, or limits the claim.
