Temporal Clauses in Irish
Clásail Aimseartha
Overview
Temporal clauses tell you when something happens in relation to another event — before, after, while, until, or when. In Irish, each temporal conjunction has its own mutation rules, making this an area where grammar and vocabulary intersect closely.
The most common temporal conjunctions are nuair a (when), sula (before), tar éis (after), fad a (while), and go dtí go (until). Each triggers different mutations on the following verb: nuair a causes lenition, sula causes eclipsis, and go dtí go causes eclipsis. Learning these patterns is essential for constructing natural-sounding complex sentences.
Temporal clauses add depth and sophistication to your Irish. Instead of listing events as separate sentences, you can weave them together: Nuair a tháinig mé abhaile, bhí sé imithe (When I came home, he had gone).
How It Works
Temporal Conjunctions
| Irish | English | Mutation |
|---|---|---|
| nuair a | when | lenition |
| sula | before | eclipsis |
| tar éis (do) | after | + verbal noun |
| fad a / an fhad a | while | lenition |
| go dtí go | until | eclipsis |
| ó shin | since then | — |
| ó + verb | since | dependent form |
Examples with Each Conjunction
| Irish | English |
|---|---|
| Nuair a tháinig mé abhaile... | When I came home... |
| Sula dtéann tú... | Before you go... |
| Tar éis dom an obair a dhéanamh... | After I did the work... |
| Fad a bhí mé ag fanacht... | While I was waiting... |
| Fan go dtí go dtiocfaidh sé. | Wait until he comes. |
Tar éis + Verbal Noun Construction
The "after" construction uses tar éis + possessive + verbal noun:
| Irish | English |
|---|---|
| Tar éis dom dul abhaile... | After I went home... |
| Tar éis di an leabhar a léamh... | After she read the book... |
| Tar éis dóibh teacht... | After they came... |

Common Mistakes
Forgetting the different mutations for each conjunction
- Wrong: Sula théann tú (lenition instead of eclipsis)
- Right: Sula dtéann tú.
- Why: Sula triggers eclipsis, not lenition. Each temporal conjunction has its own mutation pattern.
Using "nuair" without "a"
- Wrong: Nuair tháinig mé...
- Right: Nuair a tháinig mé...
- Why: Nuair requires the particle a before the verb, which then causes lenition.
Confusing "tar éis" constructions
- Wrong: Tar éis mé dul abhaile
- Right: Tar éis dom dul abhaile.
- Why: Tar éis requires the preposition do (+ person) before the verbal noun: dom (for me), di (for her), dó (for him).
Usage Notes
In spoken Irish, i ndiaidh is sometimes used instead of tar éis for "after," particularly in Connacht. The construction is the same: I ndiaidh dom dul abhaile (After I went home). In Ulster Irish, sula is sometimes replaced by sara or sular. These dialectal variations are worth recognizing even if you learn the standard forms first.
Practice Tips
- Describe your morning routine using temporal clauses: Tar éis dom éirí, nigh mé m'aghaidh. Sula ndeachaigh mé amach, d'ith mé bricfeasta.
- Practice converting pairs of sentences into one sentence with a temporal clause: "I came home" + "He was gone" → Nuair a tháinig mé abhaile, bhí sé imithe.
