Past Conditional Sentences in French

Phrases Conditionnelles au Passé

Overview

Past conditional sentences, or the "third conditional," express situations that are contrary to what actually happened in the past. They answer the question "What would have happened if...?" using the structure si + plus-que-parfait / conditionnel passe. This is the B2-level completion of the conditional system you began studying at B1.

When you say si j'avais su, je serais venu (If I had known, I would have come), you are stating that you did not know and therefore did not come -- both clauses describe unrealized past events. This construction is essential for expressing regret, analyzing past decisions, and engaging in counterfactual reasoning.

At B2, you also encounter mixed conditionals, which combine different time frames in the si clause and result clause. These allow for even more nuanced expression of how past events relate to present situations or vice versa.

How It Works

The third conditional

Si + plus-que-parfait --> conditionnel passe

Si clause (past hypothesis) Result clause (past consequence)
Si j'avais su je serais venu
Si tu m'avais dit j'aurais compris

Mixed conditionals

Type Structure Example Meaning
Past cause, present result Si + PQP, conditionnel present Si j'avais etudie, je serais medecin maintenant. Past action affects present
Present cause, past result Si + imparfait, conditionnel passe Si j'etais plus courageux, j'aurais parle. Present trait explains past failure

All three conditional types compared

Type Si clause Result clause Example

Examples in Context

French English Note
Si j'avais su, je serais venu. If I had known, I would have come. Standard 3rd conditional
Si tu m'avais dit, j'aurais compris. If you had told me, I would have understood. Past regret
If she had left earlier, she would have caught the train. Missed opportunity
Si j'avais etudie, je serais medecin maintenant. If I had studied, I would be a doctor now. Mixed: past to present
If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn't be late. Mixed: past to present
Si on m'avait prevenu, j'aurais pu m'organiser. If I had been warned, I could have organized myself. Past hypothetical
If I had been there, it wouldn't have happened. Counterfactual
Rien ne serait arrive si tu avais ecoute. Nothing would have happened if you had listened. Inverted clause order
Si seulement j'avais su! If only I had known! Exclamatory regret (no result clause)
If you hadn't called, I would have stayed home.
If I had won the lottery, I would have bought an island. Imaginary scenario

Common Mistakes

Using the conditional in the si clause

  • Why: The absolute rule applies to all conditional types: never place the conditional (present or past) after si. The si clause always uses an indicative tense -- here, the plus-que-parfait.

Using the wrong conditional type for past events

  • Wrong: Si je savais, je venais. (when talking about a specific past event that didn't happen)
  • Right: Si j'avais su, je serais venu.
  • Why: For contrary-to-fact past situations, you need the third conditional (plus-que-parfait + conditionnel passe), not the second conditional.

Forgetting agreement in the result clause with etre

  • Wrong: Si elle avait su, elle serait venu.
  • Right: Si elle avait su, elle serait venue.
  • Why: The past participle in the result clause must agree with the subject when using etre as auxiliary. Elle requires the feminine ending.

Incorrectly forming mixed conditionals

  • Wrong: Si j'avais etudie, j'aurais ete medecin maintenant. (past conditional for a present result)
  • Right: Si j'avais etudie, je serais medecin maintenant. (present conditional for present result)
  • Why: In mixed conditionals, the result clause tense matches the time of the result. A present result uses the present conditional even when the cause is in the past.

Usage Notes

Past conditional sentences are deeply embedded in French conversation and writing:

  • Expressing regret is the most common use: Si j'avais ecoute mes parents... (If I had listened to my parents...) The result clause is often left implicit.
  • Si seulement + plus-que-parfait is a powerful exclamatory form for deep regret: Si seulement j'avais su! (If only I had known!)
  • The result clause can come first: Je serais venu si j'avais su. The si clause does not have to be first, though it often is.
  • Mixed conditionals are common in real conversation because life rarely fits neatly into one time frame. You will hear them frequently once you start listening for them.
  • In formal writing, the plus-que-parfait du subjonctif can replace the plus-que-parfait in very literary style: S'il eut su... This is rare in modern French but appears in classic literature.

Practice Tips

  1. Think of five real decisions from your past and write "what if" scenarios: Si j'avais choisi une autre universite... Si je n'avais pas demenage... Si j'avais dit oui... Complete each with a result clause.
  2. Practice mixed conditionals specifically -- these are the trickiest: Si j'avais commence plus tot, je parlerais francais couramment maintenant. Write three sentences where a past cause has a present result.
  3. Read the result clause first and work backward to construct the si clause. This reverse practice strengthens your understanding of how the two clauses relate: Je serais bilingue si...
