Temporal Connectors in Persian

حروف ربط زمانی

Overview

Temporal connectors link events in time — "when," "after," "before," "until," "as soon as." At the A2 level, these words let you tell stories in sequence, describe routines, and connect events logically. Persian temporal connectors are mostly compound phrases that follow predictable patterns.

The most essential temporal connector is وقتی (vaqti, "when"), which introduces time clauses naturally and frequently. Others like بعد از (ba'd az, "after"), قبل از (qabl az, "before"), and تا وقتی که (tā vaqti ke, "until") let you sequence events with precision.

How It Works

Connector Pronunciation Meaning
وقتی (که) vaqti (ke) when
بعد از ba'd az after
قبل از qabl az before
تا وقتی که tā vaqti ke until
همین که hamin ke as soon as
در حالی که dar hāli ke while
هر وقت har vaqt whenever
از وقتی که az vaqti ke since (time)

Structure patterns:

  • وقتی + clause: وقتی رسیدم... (when I arrived...)
  • قبل از + noun/infinitive: قبل از رفتن (before going)
  • بعد از + noun/infinitive: بعد از ناهار (after lunch)
  • قبل از اینکه + subjunctive: قبل از اینکه بروی (before you go)

Examples in Context

Persian English Note
وقتی رسیدم، بارش شروع شد. When I arrived, it started raining. Time clause
بعد از ناهار می‌روم. I'll go after lunch. After + noun
قبل از رفتن زنگ بزن. Call before leaving. Before + infinitive
همین که رسید، خبرم کن. As soon as he arrives, let me know. Immediate sequence
تا وقتی که اینجایی، کمک کن. As long as you're here, help. Duration
در حالی که غذا می‌خوردم، تلفن زنگ زد. While I was eating, the phone rang. Simultaneous
هر وقت بیای، خوش‌آمدی. Whenever you come, you're welcome. Any time
از وقتی که اومده، خوشحالم. Since he came, I've been happy. Starting point
قبل از اینکه بروی، بگو. Before you go, tell me. Before + subjunctive
بعد از اینکه تمام شد، رفتیم. After it finished, we left. After + clause

Common Mistakes

Using wrong verb form after قبل از اینکه

  • Wrong: قبل از اینکه می‌روی (indicative)
  • Right: قبل از اینکه بروی (subjunctive)
  • Why: قبل از اینکه requires the subjunctive in the following clause.

Confusing وقتی and وقت

  • Wrong: Using وقت alone as "when"
  • Right: وقتی or وقتی که for "when" (conjunction); وقت for "time" (noun)
  • Why: وقتی is the conjunction; وقت is a noun meaning "time."

Practice Tips

  1. Tell your morning routine using temporal connectors: وقتی بلند شدم... (when I got up...), بعد از صبحانه... (after breakfast...), قبل از رفتن... (before leaving...).
  2. Practice همین که for immediate sequences: همین که رسیدم، زنگ می‌زنم (as soon as I arrive, I'll call).
  3. Build narrative chains: first وقتی, then بعد از آن, then در نهایت (finally).
