Simple Past Tense in Persian
ماضی ساده
Overview
The simple past tense is one of the most straightforward tenses in Persian. It describes completed actions in the past and is formed using the past stem of the verb plus personal endings. At the A2 level, mastering this tense allows you to tell stories, describe what happened, and share your experiences.
The past stem is found by removing the -ن from the infinitive: رفتن (raftan, to go) gives you the past stem رفت (raft). Unlike the present stem, which is often unpredictable, the past stem is almost always derived directly from the infinitive, making it more regular and predictable.
The personal endings for the simple past are the same ones you learned for the present tense, with one exception: the third person singular (او) has no ending at all. So رفت (raft) by itself means "he/she went." This zero ending is a distinctive feature of the Persian past tense.
How It Works
Formula: Past stem + personal ending
| Person | Ending | Example with رفتن (to go) |
|---|---|---|
| من | -م -am | رفتم raftam (I went) |
| تو | -ی -i | رفتی rafti (you went) |
| او | (none) | رفت raft (he/she went) |
| ما | -یم -im | رفتیم raftim (we went) |
| شما | -ید -id | رفتید raftid (you went) |
| آنها | -ند -and | رفتند raftand (they went) |
Common past stems:
| Infinitive | Past Stem | Example |
|---|---|---|
| رفتن raftan (go) | رفت raft | رفتم I went |
| آمدن āmadan (come) | آمد āmad | آمد he/she came |
| خوردن khordan (eat) | خورد khord | خوردیم we ate |
| نوشتن neveshtan (write) | نوشت nevesht | نوشت he/she wrote |
| گفتن goftan (say) | گفت goft | گفتم I said |
| دیدن didan (see) | دید did | دیدید you saw |
| کردن kardan (do) | کرد kard | کردند they did |
| خواندن khāndan (read) | خواند khānd | خواندم I read |
Negation: Add ن (na-) before the past stem: نرفتم naraftam (I didn't go), نخوردیم nakhordim (we didn't eat).

Common Mistakes
Using present stems for past tense
- Wrong: من میرَوَم دیروز (using present stem for past)
- Right: من دیروز رفتم
- Why: The simple past uses the past stem (from the infinitive minus ن), not the present stem with می.
Adding می to simple past
- Wrong: میرفتم (when meaning "I went" as a single completed action)
- Right: رفتم (I went — completed action)
- Why: می + past stem = past imperfect (habitual/continuous past), not simple past. For a one-time completed action, no می.
Forgetting the zero ending for third person
- Wrong: او رفتد (adding an ending)
- Right: او رفت (no ending)
- Why: Third person singular past has no personal ending. The bare past stem is the third person form.
Usage Notes
The simple past is the narrative workhorse of Persian. It is used in storytelling, news reporting, and everyday recounting of events. In spoken Persian, it often replaces the present perfect for recent past events: رفتم (I went / I've gone). The boundary between simple past and present perfect is more fluid in colloquial speech than in formal writing.
Practice Tips
- Tell the story of your day yesterday using only simple past: صبح بلند شدم (I got up), صبحانه خوردم (I ate breakfast), به کار رفتم (I went to work). This is practical and immediately useful.
- Practice past stems by going through your verb list and removing ن from each infinitive. This mechanical exercise makes the pattern automatic.
- Practice negation by retelling your day with things you did NOT do: دیروز ورزش نکردم (I didn't exercise yesterday), سینما نرفتم (I didn't go to the cinema).
