Progressive Aspect in Past in Persian

وجه استمراری در گذشته

This article is part of the Persian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

While the past imperfect (می‌رفتم) covers habitual past actions, the progressive aspect adds specificity — it describes an action happening at one particular moment in the past. At the B1 level, this construction lets you set scenes and describe interrupted actions: "I was eating when the phone rang."

The formation parallels the present continuous: داشتم (past of داشتن) + past imperfect of the main verb. So داشتم می‌خوردم means "I was eating (at that very moment)." The key difference from simple past imperfect is immediacy: the action was in progress at a specific point in time.

How It Works

Formula: داشتن (past) + می + past stem + ending

Person Past Progressive
من داشتم می‌رفتم (I was going)
تو داشتی می‌رفتی (you were going)
او داشت می‌رفت (he/she was going)
ما داشتیم می‌رفتیم (we were going)
شما داشتید می‌رفتید (you were going)
آن‌ها داشتند می‌رفتند (they were going)

Contrast with past imperfect:

  • می‌رفتم = I used to go (habitual) OR I was going (ambiguous)
  • داشتم می‌رفتم = I was going at that exact moment (specific)

Examples in Context

Persian English Note
داشتم غذا می‌خوردم که زنگ زدند. I was eating when they called. Interrupted action
داشت باران می‌آمد. It was raining (at that moment). Weather in progress
داشتیم صحبت می‌کردیم. We were talking (right then). Ongoing
داشتم فکر می‌کردم... I was thinking... Mental state
داشت می‌رفت که دیدمش. He was leaving when I saw him. Interrupted
بچه‌ها داشتند بازی می‌کردند. The children were playing. Description
داشتم می‌خوابیدم. I was falling asleep. Process
داشت تلفن حرف می‌زد. He/She was talking on the phone. Colloquial

Common Mistakes

Using past progressive for habitual actions

  • Wrong: هر روز داشتم می‌رفتم (every day I was going)
  • Right: هر روز می‌رفتم (I used to go every day)
  • Why: The progressive is for one specific moment, not habits. Habitual actions use the simple past imperfect.

Mismatching person between auxiliary and main verb

  • Wrong: داشتم می‌رفت (I-auxiliary + he/she-main)
  • Right: داشتم می‌رفتم (both first person)
  • Why: Both the auxiliary and main verb must agree in person.

Trying to negate the past progressive

  • Wrong: نداشتم می‌رفتم
  • Right: نمی‌رفتم (use simple past imperfect negative)
  • Why: Like the present continuous, the past progressive cannot be negated. Use the simple imperfect negative instead.

Practice Tips

  1. Set scenes for stories: داشتم کتاب می‌خواندم که... (I was reading a book when...), داشت باران می‌آمد و... (it was raining and...).
  2. Describe interrupted actions: X داشتم می‌کردم که Y شد (I was doing X when Y happened).
  3. Compare progressive and imperfect: داشتم می‌رفتم (I was going at that moment) vs می‌رفتم (I used to go / I was going generally).
